On 15 August 1995, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) launched India's first public internet service. Before this, the internet was available only for limited use by educational and government institutions. Since the launch, the tech wonder has transformed communication, commerce, finance, education, and entertainment, becoming an inseparable part of daily life for millions of Indians. As we complete three decades since this milestone, here's a look at the journey—and where India stands today.
Signal revolution
Mobile technology has played a pivotal role in making the internet accessible to the remotest corners. From 2G's voice calls and SMS to 3G's mobile internet and apps, 4G's video and cloud services, and now 5G in the era of artificial intelligence, the evolution has been rapid. It has enabled financial inclusion, remote education, telemedicine, micro-entrepreneurship, real-time market information, and faster disaster response.
Expanding access
Internet adoption has surged, crossing a 50% penetration rate three years ago. The country is also catching up with global levels, but remains behind emerging market peers like China. Indians already consume more mobile data than others, and this is set to rise significantly. A basic mobile voice and data package costs around 1% of per capita income, making India one of the cheapest places to go online.
Gaps in the market
In India, young people use the internet widely, but many may also be lost with making full use of it. The gender gap on access and digital skills is stark. Internet access in rural areas is also inadequate. Meanwhile, India also faces the challenge of having an internet duopoly.

PM Modi's tax overhaul to strain finances but boost image amid US trade tensions

IDFC First Bank says the cuts will boost India's GDP by 0.6 percentage points over 12 months but will cost the state and federal government $20 billion it will improve weak stock market sentiment and bring political dividends for Modi ahead of a critical state election in the eastern state of Bihar, said Rasheed Kidwai, a fellow at New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation."GST reduction will impact everyone, unlike cuts to income tax, which is paid by only 3%-4% of the population. Modi is doing this as he is under a lot of pressure due to U.S. policies," said Kidwai."The move will also help the stock market, which is now politically important as it has a lot of retail investors."India launched the major tax system in 2017 that subsumed local state taxes into the new, nationwide GST to unify its economy for the first the biggest tax reform since India's independence faced criticism for its complex design that taxes products and services under four slabs - 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.Last year, India said caramel popcorn would be taxed at 18% but the salted category at 5%, triggering criticism about a glaring example of GST's the new system, India will abolish the 28% slab - which includes cars and electronics - and move nearly all of the items under the 12% category to the lower 5% slab, benefitting many more consumer items and packaged data shows the 28% and 12% tax slabs together garner 16% of India's annual GST revenue of roughly $250 billion last fiscal is a key state politically and goes to the polls by November. A recent survey by the VoteVibe agency showed Modi's opposition has an edge largely because of a lack of jobs."Any tax cut has wide public appreciation. But of course, the timing is purely determined by political exigencies," said Dilip Cherian, a communications consultant and co-founder of Indian public relations firm Perfect Relations."It seems to be an indication of some mixture of frustration as well as recognition that there is a broad public pushback against high and crippling rates of taxation."Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has seized on his tax announcement, posting on X that on the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, "a brighter gift of simpler taxes and more savings is waiting for every Indian."Modi has vowed to protect farmers, fishermen and cattlemen, following Trump's surprise tariff announcement on India, after trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil latest round of trade talks between the two nations set for August 25-29 has also been called off.

ITC places bet on premium aromatherapy

ITC Limited MUMBAI: For young working Indians juggling deadlines and responsibilities, mental wellness is becoming a priority. They are willing to spend on soothing experiences-for instance, something as accessible as fragrances. This is the market opportunity that ITC is betting on. The company has quietly forayed into the aromatherapy (home aromas) space with the launch of a new brand, Pranah, which will offer consumers a range of premium incense sticks, cones and scented candles. The home aromas market in India (with mass players such as Odonil, Ambi Pur) is pegged at some Rs 5,500 crore, but ITC is playing at the still-emerging premium end, where a few digital-first brands currently operate. The premium aromatherapy market is currently worth about Rs 500 crore but could touch Rs 5,000 crore in a decade given its rapid growth, Gaurav Tayal, divisional chief executive, matches and agarbatti business at ITC told TOI. "Post Covid, there has been a surge in consumer demand for wellness choices. The new generation is all about experiences," Tayal said. The market opportunity also lies in the fact that there are no big players in the space as of now and the products on shelves are not backed by science, Tayal explained. For now, Pranah has been launched on a pilot mode in Delhi and Bengaluru through quick commerce channels. Bengaluru man's Rs 78,000 EMI on Rs 1.3 crore flat turns into burden after layoff. Sparks rent vs buy debate online

Owning a dream home in Bengaluru is often seen as a milestone, but for one family, it has become a source of stress. A story shared on X by a user called Wealth Whisperer has stirred a heated discussion about whether buying property in India's metros is worth the risk compared to renting. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Wealth Whisperer narrated the story of her cousin's husband, who purchased a flat worth Rs 1.3 crore a few years ago. With a hefty down payment of Rs 50 lakh and monthly EMIs of Rs 78,000, the family managed to keep up—until a recent job loss from an MNC turned the investment into a financial strain. She revealed that she advised him to sell the flat and start afresh with new plans. — chai_and_chat (@chai_and_chat) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Undo Internet debates The post sparked strong reactions. One user compared it with his own experience, saying he bought a flat for Rs 65 lakh in 2020, made a down payment of Rs 20 lakh, and took a loan of Rs 45 lakh. His EMI came to around Rs 40,000, but he claimed that he could now rent the flat for Rs 55,000 or sell it for Rs 1.5 crore. He also added that at one point, he rented the property out, used the proceeds to repay part of the loan, and now felt confident he could clear the balance with his PF. Others weighed in on the bigger question. 'Is it really worth buying costly apartments these days, or should we just rent?' asked one user. Wealth Whisperer responded that there is no universal answer, explaining that it depends on a person's bank balance and the prevailing rent. Some users shared their philosophies on money. 'That's the only reason I pay in cash: one-time payment, no EMIs,' wrote one. Another questioned the wisdom of taking on debt with an unstable job, suggesting that only government employees enjoy true security. Wealth Whisperer countered this by claiming that over 90 per cent of Indians are in private jobs and will naturally want to buy homes, but the real key lies in calculating the risks before taking on heavy debt.
