MLA Bonela slams Jogarao over corruption

Hans India21-05-2025

Parvathipuram: Parvathipuram MLA Bonela Vijay Chandra launched a scathing attack on former MLA Alajangi Jogarao, branding him as a 'corruption Anaconda' and accusing him of spreading false allegations against honest political figures.
Responding to Jogarao's recent claims, Vijay Chandra challenged him to provide evidence for the accusations, particularly those suggesting that money was being taken for administrative transfers. 'If he has the courage and proof, let him present it,' said Vijay Chandra, dismissing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
He accused Jogarao of pressuring local tahsildars to tamper with revenue records and asked why the former MLA is blind to the complaints filed by the public against corrupt officials.
Chandra defended his actions to transfer corrupt officials, asserting, 'Transferring officers involved in corruption is not a crime.' He alleged that Jogarao, who once served the Botcha family, is now serving the interests of Chinna Srinu, both of whom he accused of looting the undivided Vizianagaram district.
The MLA also addressed personal attacks made by Jogarao, condemning them as vulgar and unbecoming of a public figure. Responding to allegations about misuse of flood relief funds, Vijay Chandra displayed receipts to the media, stating that a YSRCP supporter had issued a cheque for Rs. 10,000, which bounced and was returned.

Mamata demands that BJP-led Centre release all MNREGA pending dues

Kolkata, June 18 (UNI) As the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Central Government to resume the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in West Bengal from August 1, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the BJP-led government release all pending dues that have been withheld for the past four years. 'The court has ordered that work must resume from August. But for four years, no work was done, no money was released. Our leaders staged protests in Delhi, and cases were filed against them. Central ministers didn't even meet them. We were humiliated in many ways,' the chief minister said in a press conference at Nabanna on Wednesday. 'We paid the workers from state funds. That money must be returned. The Centre must calculate the dues from the day the scheme was stopped and pay accordingly. Why was our share of the money given to other states? That is a crime,' she added. The central government which funds the scheme entirely had suspended MGNREGA funding to West Bengal in March 2022, citing large-scale misappropriation. West Bengal received Rs 7,507.80 crore under MGNREGA in the 2021–22 financial year. However, since then, no funds have been disbursed. The Centre had justified its actions by citing inconsistencies found in 31 out of 63 inspected worksites, according to RTI replies. 'Funds for the 100-day work scheme were not provided. People were made to work, but no payment was given. Who will pay them? We did—from the state government's own resources, through the 'Karmashree' scheme. And now they've come to celebrate 'Bangla Diwas'—those who have constantly insulted and deprived Bengal.' 'We will review this petition. You are sending teams to Bengal, but first, release the funds. It has been four years, and not a single rupee has been given. This is public money,' she said. The chief minister was referring to a four-member verification committee comprising representatives from the Central and State Governments, along with officials from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Accountant General. In April 2025, the committee reported that Rs 24 crore had been recovered from the districts under investigation. Additional Solicitor General Ashok Kumar Chakraborty, representing the Centre, said in the court that central investigation teams uncovered irregularities in districts like Hooghly, East Bardhaman, Malda, and Darjeeling, involving embezzlement of over Rs 50 crores. A broader audit revealed anomalies amounting to Rs 613 crores, of which Rs 2.1 crores had been recovered by the state as of 2024. However, the court observed that the grievances of genuine workers cannot be ignored on account of administrative or political concerns marking a major development in the long-standing deadlock over the rural employment programme. 'All the allegations are from before 2022. You are free to take any action regarding those. But the project must be started now,' Chief Justice Sivagnanam observed in response during the hearing. The court further clarified that MGNREGA, as legislated, does not allow for its indefinite suspension even in the face of corruption charges, and that any such action violates the spirit of the Act. Goa minister who made corruption allegations against CM's department dropped from Cabinet

Three weeks after he levelled corruption allegations in the Department of Tribal Welfare — a portfolio held by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant – Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude was dropped from the state Cabinet Wednesday. Goa BJP President Damu Naik told The Indian Express: 'The decision was unanimous. It was taken after consultations by the government, the party and the party's central leadership. Party discipline is a must'. Party sources said the decision to strip Gaude of his cabinet post was taken by the chief minister soon after the incident last month. The state leadership had been waiting for a nod from the central party leadership in Delhi. For the time being, the portfolios held by Gaude will be with the chief minister, sources said. BJP president Naik had gone to Delhi to meet the central leadership of the party earlier this month and submitted a report. Naik added that the decision to induct someone in the Cabinet shall be taken 'very soon'. The row erupted when Gaude, who was also holding sports and rural development portfolios, made a jibe at the alleged corruption in the tribal welfare ministry at a Prerna Divas event organised by the Directorate of Tribal Welfare along with the United Tribal Associations' Alliance (UTAA) on May 25. In his speech, Gaude said: 'A large amount of taxpayers' money is allotted to the Tribal Welfare department. If it is unable to organise this programme efficiently, then it shows a lack of control over the administration. In my opinion, the administration has weakened today. The files of contractors are handled under the Shram Shakti Bhavan (a government block) building on the sly. Something is taken from them, and then they are asked to submit their files.' He went on to say: 'The construction of the Tribal Bhavan is a long-pending demand of the tribal community. They gave their land for the project… The foundation stone was laid when I was the Tribal Welfare Minister. The project has been stalled. Why is there no progress in the project?' After Gaude's remarks had prompted a sharp reaction from the BJP, with Sawant warning of 'appropriate' action for 'irresponsible statements', the former minister had gone into a damage-control exercise, later claiming that he was 'misquoted' in the media. A theatre actor-turned-politician, Gaude, a 53-year-old tribal leader who represents the Priol constituency, has often courted controversies over the last several years. In February 2024, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar accused Gaude for his alleged involvement in misappropriation of government funds to the tune of Rs 26 lakh meant for organising cultural programmes in South Goa's Canacona constituency. In 2022, Gaude sparked a row when he defended the Sawant government's decision to allocate renovation work of Kala Academy in Panaji without a tendering process, saying that even the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had not 'invited quotations for building the Taj Mahal, which for 390 years has remained as it was'. In the previous BJP government, Gaude had been a minister while remaining an Independent MLA supporting the ruling party. He had then also held the tribal welfare portfolio along with the art and culture ministry. He retained his ministerial berth even after Sawant succeeded Manohar Parrikar as the CM in 2019 following the latter's demise. Ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls, Gaude joined the BJP and won the election on its ticket from his Priol seat by defeating the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP)'s president Deepak Dhavalikar.
