Goa minister who made corruption allegations against CM's department dropped from Cabinet

Indian Express6 hours ago

Three weeks after he levelled corruption allegations in the Department of Tribal Welfare — a portfolio held by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant – Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude was dropped from the state Cabinet Wednesday.
Goa BJP President Damu Naik told The Indian Express: 'The decision was unanimous. It was taken after consultations by the government, the party and the party's central leadership. Party discipline is a must'.
Party sources said the decision to strip Gaude of his cabinet post was taken by the chief minister soon after the incident last month. The state leadership had been waiting for a nod from the central party leadership in Delhi.
For the time being, the portfolios held by Gaude will be with the chief minister, sources said.
BJP president Naik had gone to Delhi to meet the central leadership of the party earlier this month and submitted a report. Naik added that the decision to induct someone in the Cabinet shall be taken 'very soon'.
The row erupted when Gaude, who was also holding sports and rural development portfolios, made a jibe at the alleged corruption in the tribal welfare ministry at a Prerna Divas event organised by the Directorate of Tribal Welfare along with the United Tribal Associations' Alliance (UTAA) on May 25. In his speech, Gaude said: 'A large amount of taxpayers' money is allotted to the Tribal Welfare department. If it is unable to organise this programme efficiently, then it shows a lack of control over the administration. In my opinion, the administration has weakened today. The files of contractors are handled under the Shram Shakti Bhavan (a government block) building on the sly. Something is taken from them, and then they are asked to submit their files.'
He went on to say: 'The construction of the Tribal Bhavan is a long-pending demand of the tribal community. They gave their land for the project… The foundation stone was laid when I was the Tribal Welfare Minister. The project has been stalled. Why is there no progress in the project?'
After Gaude's remarks had prompted a sharp reaction from the BJP, with Sawant warning of 'appropriate' action for 'irresponsible statements', the former minister had gone into a damage-control exercise, later claiming that he was 'misquoted' in the media.
A theatre actor-turned-politician, Gaude, a 53-year-old tribal leader who represents the Priol constituency, has often courted controversies over the last several years. In February 2024, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar accused Gaude for his alleged involvement in misappropriation of government funds to the tune of Rs 26 lakh meant for organising cultural programmes in South Goa's Canacona constituency.
In 2022, Gaude sparked a row when he defended the Sawant government's decision to allocate renovation work of Kala Academy in Panaji without a tendering process, saying that even the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had not 'invited quotations for building the Taj Mahal, which for 390 years has remained as it was'.
In the previous BJP government, Gaude had been a minister while remaining an Independent MLA supporting the ruling party. He had then also held the tribal welfare portfolio along with the art and culture ministry. He retained his ministerial berth even after Sawant succeeded Manohar Parrikar as the CM in 2019 following the latter's demise. Ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls, Gaude joined the BJP and won the election on its ticket from his Priol seat by defeating the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP)'s president Deepak Dhavalikar.

Haldighati plaques omit key historical facts, spark uproar

1 2 Jaipur: A controversy erupted in Rajasthan over newly installed commemorative plaques at the historic Haldighati battlefield, as the state marked the 450th Haldighati Shaurya Diwas Wednesday. The plaques, installed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at Rakt Talai and the Rajsamand local administration at Haldighati Pass, have come under fire for alleged historical distortions and omissions. Heritage activists and a history professor have alleged several critical inaccuracies in the plaques' content. Most notably, these fail to mention Mirza Raja Man Singh I of Amber, who commanded the Mughal forces during the historic battle fought on June 18, 1576. "It is a matter of shame that the name of Mirza Raja Man Singh I is missing from the plaque at Haldighati. Instead, only Akbar is mentioned, giving the false impression that the battle was fought directly between Pratap and Akbar," said Prof Chandra Shekhar Sharma, Head of the History Department at Meera Girls College, Udaipur. Sharma has authored the book, Rashtra Ratan Maharana Pratap. Local heritage groups, including Johar Smriti Sansthan and Chetak Smarak Samiti, have demanded a correct reference to Akbar's general as "Mirza Raja Man Singh I of Amber." The plaques have also been criticised for allegedly misrepresenting troop movements and battle statistics. According to Prof Sharma, the inscription incorrectly states that the forces under Man Singh I approached from Kumbhalgarh and Gogunda, which were actually Maharana Pratap's strongholds. "In truth, the Mughal forces marched from Ajmer, Mandalgarh and Mohi, and were stationed at Molela," said Sharma, citing Muntakhib al-Tawarikh by Abd al-Qadir Badayuni, Akbar's court historian. Furthermore, the claimed three-hour duration of the battle has been disputed. Contemporary chronicles, including Muntakhib al-Tawarikh by Abd al-Qadir Badayuni, suggest the battle lasted an entire day, said Prof Sharma. The plaques' figures regarding army sizes have also been challenged by historians citing multiple historical sources. The plaque claims the Mughal army had 5,000 soldiers while Maharana Pratap's side included 1,900 cavalry and 1,000 Bhil warriors. Sharma refuted these figures, quoting the writings of noted historian Gaurishankar Hirachand Ojha (Veer Shiromani Maharana Pratap), who cited at least four varying estimates and emphasised that none matched the figures on the plaque. "It's an irresponsible oversimplification," said Sharma. Ojha was a 19th-century historian at the court of Udaipur royals. Local heritage groups, including Johar Smriti Sansthan (Chittorgarh), Navyuvak Mandal (Haldighati) and Chetak Smarak Samiti (Balecha, Udaipur), have demanded immediate corrections to ensure historical accuracy. "Any act seen against the integrity of Maharana Pratap's legacy or factual history will face strong opposition," said Kan Singh of the Sansthan. Ironically, these controversial plaques were installed to replace previous versions that had been criticised for suggesting a Mughal victory, only to create new historical disputes.

BJP, Akali Dal allege ruling party distributed freebies, money ahead of Ludhiana West bypoll

Ludhiana: A day before the voting for the Ludhiana West bypoll, the Bharatiya Janata Party held a press conference on Wednesday, where they appealed to the public to go and vote without any fear of the administration and police. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state general secretary of BJP, Anil Sarin, while addressing the press conference, alleged that the ruling party is bent on winning this seat at any cost so that AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal could reach the Rajya Sabha. Sarin, while addressing the press conference, claimed that the election commission is responsible for free and fair elections and it is not allowed for any candidate or party to lure or threaten the voters. He said it is sad indeed to see that the govt is trying every possible effort to lure the voter. Sarin claimed that the ruling party is sensing its defeat in the election and that is why they are distributing ration, school bags, stationery, suits, sarees, electronics material, liquor, and money among the voters. He questioned when the govt claimed that they worked hard in the past 3.5 years, then what is the need to adopt such tactics. While taking a dig at CM Bhagwant Mann, he said CM Bhagwant Mann knows they are going to lose this seat, so he already left the ground in advance. He said many cases surfaced where anti-social elements are made to join the party and unwanted people are given police cover. Why are all these things happening? The district administration is responsible for free and fair elections, but it appears that officials are also being threatened, and illegal activities are being conducted by them. The AAP is doing this on a large scale, and the district administration will have to stop this immediately. Cops are advised to do their jobs judiciously and, instead of becoming agents of AAP, they should control illegal activities. He further requested the ECI to take strict action against these illegal activities, and action should be taken against the party adopting such tactics. BJP demands ECI should take note of these activities, and they raised the matter with ECI already, and they are hopeful action will be taken against the erring persons. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BJP state general secretary Anil Sarin, district president Rajnish Dhiman, media panellist Dr Kamaljit Soi, Narinder Malhi, and press secretary Dr Satish Kumar were present at the press conference. Ghumman alleged distribution of money by AAP The Shiromani Akali Dal candidate, advocate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, alleged that the ruling party was distributing money and other items to the voters. He was seen arguing with AAP councillor Sunny Master for the alleged distribution of things to the voters. He advised him not to support Delhi AAP leaders because Delhi people are not going to stay here; only Punjabis are to stay in Punjab.

Gujarat: Bypolls In Visavadar, Kadi Assembly Constituencies To Be Held Today

Ahmedabad: Bypolls to the Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats in Gujarat will be held on Thursday, where the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have put up their candidates. Votes will be counted on June 23. Eligible voters will be allowed to cast their ballots between 7 am and 8 pm, election officials said on Wednesday. The state government has declared a public holiday in both constituencies on the voting day, said the office of Gujarat's Chief Electoral Officer. It said votes would be cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 294 polling stations in each constituency. The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district has been lying vacant since December 2023, after the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. While the BJP has nominated Kirit Patel for the bypoll in Visavadar, Congress has fielded Nitin Ranpariya. AAP's former Gujarat president Gopal Italia is also in the fray. Despite its near-total dominance in the state, the BJP hasn't won the Vasavadar seat since 2007. Party leaders said they are hopeful of overcoming the 18-year jinx here. In the last assembly election in 2022, AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani had defeated BJP's Harshad Ribadiya, a Congress turncoat and former MLA, by 7,063 votes. The Kadi seat in Mehsana district, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, has been lying vacant since February 4, following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda from Kadi, while Congress has given the ticket to Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA. Ramesh Chavda had won the seat in 2012, but lost it to BJP's Karsanbhai Solanki in 2017. Like the Visavadar, the Kadi seat will also witness a three-way fight, with the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP fielding Jagdish Chavda. In the 182-member Gujarat assembly, the BJP has 161 legislators, Congress 12 and AAP four. While one seat is with the Samajwadi Party, two are with independents.
