2 Olive Ridley turtles wash ashore at Agonda, 1 dead
Canacona: A highly decomposed Olive Ridley turtle carcass washed ashore at Agonda, Canacona, on Monday morning. Lifeguards spotted it and reported it to the Goa Standing Network between 9 and 9.30am. The veterinary doctor at Benaulim, after inspecting the carcass, directed the forest staff to dispose of it. After informing range forest officer Rajesh Naik, the staff buried it in a far-off corner of Agonda beach. Another Olive Ridley turtle washed ashore at Agonda at 12.40pm on Monday, with injuries in its hind legs and flippers. Lifeguards alerted the forest staff, who rushed to save it. Naik said that it might have been injured by fishing nets or a fishing vessel fan and have swum to the nearest shore. He said that after administering medication, the turtle was transferred to the Benaulim veterinary hospital, where it is being monitored. He added that the turtle's innate tendencies might be drawing it to Agonda beach.

Snitch raises $40 mn to expand men's fashion brand in India, overseas
Snitch, a rising direct-to-consumer (D2C) menswear brand in India, has secured up to $40 million in a Series B funding round aimed at accelerating its expansion plans. The round was led by Mumbai-based 360 ONE Asset, with continued support from existing investors IvyCap Ventures and SWC Global. New backers included the Ravi Modi Family Office — associated with ethnic wear giant Manyavar — as well as a group of angel investors. Founded to address the evolving fashion preferences of India's urban male consumers, Snitch has gained traction for its affordable, trend-forward apparel. The company plans to use the fresh capital to broaden its offline retail presence from more than 55 stores to over 100 by the end of 2025. It also intends to enter the quick commerce space, offering near-instant delivery of fashion items, and expand into new lifestyle and apparel categories. Additionally, Snitch is eyeing international markets, with pilot launches expected in the near future. 'Snitch has been a force redefining fashion making in India for the world. This fundraise is a backing to our belief that Indian fashion can move with speed, scale and confidence, and truly compete at a global stage,' said Siddharth Dungarwal, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Snitch. With 120 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth, more than 55 stores, and strong loyal customer base, Dungarwal said the firm is stepping into a bigger league, building a world-class brand. 'As we gear up for global expansion and entering the public markets, this marks a bold step towards creating one of India's most iconic fashion stories,' added Dungarwal. Chetan Naik, senior fund manager and strategy head for technology at 360 ONE Asset, described Snitch as one of India's fastest-growing and profitable scaled D2C brands. He noted the company's distinctive approach to fashion retail, citing its agility in tracking trends, digital-first execution, and expanding its omnichannel presence. Naik highlighted Snitch's operating model, which combines rapid design cycles, end-to-end execution, and lean manufacturing. 'Snitch has demonstrated the rare ability to deliver high growth while maintaining strong unit economics and exceptional capital efficiency,' said Naik. He added, 'Its sharp focus on men's fashion, backed by a scalable offline model, positions it well to become a category-defining brand.' Vikram Gupta, founder and managing partner at IvyCap Ventures, said the firm's reinvestment in Snitch reflects its continued confidence in the brand's execution capabilities, capital-efficient growth, and distinct positioning within the men's fashion segment. He noted that with a targeted focus on Gen Z and millennial consumers, along with a scalable omnichannel strategy, Snitch is on a strong path towards category leadership. Tuck Lye Koh, founding partner, SWC Global, said Snitch continues to demonstrate strong supply chain management as well as high focus on customer experience. He said over the last 18 months, with the offline expansion, Snitch has established itself into a truly omnichannel brand. 'We are looking forward to our continued partnership with the team to grow Snitch into a leading men's apparel brand in the country,' said Tuck Lye Koh. Founded in 2020, Snitch has emerged as a standout in India's D2C fashion market. It previously raised Rs 110 crore in its Series A round in December 2023, which laid the foundation for its offline expansion, tech stack, and product depth. Since then, it has doubled revenue, strengthened brand equity, and built a community-first approach to fashion for Gen Z and millennial men. PwC India Investment Banking team acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Snitch on the successful closure of Series B round. JSA was the legal counsel to Snitch on this transaction.

IIT Madras honours school teachers who inspired students to excel in JEE last year
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has organised a two-day demo day on June 9 and 10, where candidates who have qualified in the Joint Engineering Examinations (JEE) will interact with students, alumni, and teachers and visit the facilities on the campus. Candidates unable to travel may participate in the online event to be held on June 3. Offline events are being held at six cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In Chennai, around 300 students and their parents will participate in the event. The students will also have an opportunity to attend classes that will be conducted by professors. They will visit laboratories and the Centre for Innovation. The aim of the effort is to help students decide their course of study. Institute director V. Kamakoti said the top 100 ranked students invariably choose computer science and engineering over core engineering subjects. 'We conduct several efforts like Shaastra, Saarang, Open House, and CFI Day. We want students to opt for core engineering over CSE,' he said. The institute has introduced awards to honour pre-undergraduate teachers whose efforts were instrumental in their students making it to the institute in 2024-25. The 'First Principles' Teachers' award (FPTA) recognises the teachers who helped the students understand concepts in physics, chemistry, and mathematics within the IIT-JEE syllabus. Institute director V. Kamakoti said students had two methods of learning; one is rote and arriving at the right answer by elimination in JEE. The other is understanding the concept and applying them to arrive at solutions. 'This is the ideal way of learning. This is how school education should be. We wanted to recognise such teachers,' he said. 'We asked the students who was their inspiration and we asked the first year students to nominate their teachers. The second group of students consistently come up with unexpected solutions. This was the reason we decided to honour them,' he said. Sabitha G.J., mathematics teacher from Ida Scudder ICSE School in Vellore, has a personalised way of teaching. Her student Adhil Ahmed, a student of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science said his teacher had motivated and inspired him. 'He would sit alone and solve mathematic problems in the afternoon. I sat with him and encouraged him,' she said. She sometimes uses dance movements and rhymes to teach concepts. Chemistry teacher Anurooop Naik of Bengaluru was nominated by his student Arun Radhakrishnan, a student of Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Mr. Naik said he would use daily incidents to explain concepts. He had a nickname for his students using chemical compounds that helped students remember the concepts. Mr. Naik is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University and taught class 11 and 12 students in Srinagar for three years. He says they were the most enjoyable years so far. He plans to set up his own institute when he finds motivated physics and mathematics teachers. Prathap Haridoss, Dean, academic courses, and Amrutash Misra of AskIITM Initiative, and alumnus also spoke.

Constable, three others arrested in cheating case in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: A head constable and his three accomplices have been arrested by the Peenya police for allegedly cheating a retired bank employee of Rs 15 lakh by promising to provide rejected Reserve Bank of India (RBI) currency notes at a discounted rate. The main accused, Nagraj, is a head constable attached to the Hiriyur police station in Chitradurga district. His associates, Kiran Kumar, Gajendra, and Prabhu, are all residents of Chitradurga. According to the police, Radha Krishna Naik, a retired bank employee was previously a neighbour of Kumar's sister. During visits to his sister's home, Kumar befriended Naik and later claimed to possess Rs 50 lakh worth of rejected RBI currency notes. He offered Naik Rs 10 lakh worth of these notes in exchange for Rs 5 lakh in valid currency. Trusting him, Naik paid the amount in stages. However, when notes were not delivered, Naik threatened to file a police complaint. Fearing action, the gang sought Nagraj's help, who falsely informed Naik that Kumar had been arrested by the Hiriyur police for transporting illegal currency, the police said. Investigation revealed that the gang did not possess any such rejected currency and had cheated Naik with a cooked-up story, the police added.

‘Registration of hotel booking portals must'
Panaji: The tourism department has issued a fresh directive urging all online travel platforms to register with the department within 15 days. Tourism director Kedar Naik said that the department found several online travel aggregators accepting online bookings without obtaining the required no objection certificate (NOC), licence, or permissions from the department. Naik said that under the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982 and Rules of 1985, all online travel portals must complete their registration within 15 working days from the date of issue of the official circular. This is not the first time the department issued such a directive. In 2023, the tourism department directed hotels, guesthouses, homestays, and online travel agencies to register with the department before conducting any tourism-related transactions or activities in Goa. Then director of tourism Suneel Anchipaka threatened to impose hefty fines since offering services to tourists without registration was deemed illegal. A few weeks earlier, the department asked eco-tourism farms, watersports operators, and all other stakeholders to also register with the department.
