The 70-hour workweek debate has reignited—this time in China, where the government is cracking down on the '996' work culture, recently declared illegal by the nation's top court.
From tech giants to manufacturing powerhouses, several major Chinese firms have started telling employees to clock out earlier, The Economist reported last month. Midea, one of the country's leading appliance makers, now sends staff home by 6:20 pm. DJI, a drone manufacturer long associated with late hours, has begun clearing offices by 9 pm.
These shifts signal a quiet, state-backed effort to dismantle the '996' culture that has come to define white-collar life in China's tech sector.

The '996 work culture' refers to a work schedule common in some Chinese tech companies and startups, where employees are expected to work from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week.
This results in a 72-hour work week, which is well beyond China's legal limit.
Why tech firms in China pushed the 70-hour work week model
The 996 work culture became a norm in China's tech industry, especially after Alibaba founder Jack Ma famously called it a 'blessing' in 2019, adding, 'If you want to join Alibaba, you need to be prepared to work 12 hours a day, otherwise why even bother joining?'
A leaked internal letter from 2019 showed Richard Liu, founder of JD.com, writing, 'Slackers are not my brothers!' He went on to criticise 'those who spend their days drinking coffee and pretending to work' and praised 'brothers who fight together and bleed together'.
At the time, a job at Alibaba, Tencent, or Baidu signified prestige and prosperity, even if it came at the cost of personal time, pushing workers to quietly tolerate the long working hours.

But soon after, tech workers, many of them young, began pushing back, criticising the culture as exploitative and unsustainable on platforms like GitHub.

This was further fuelled by the issue that despite working long hours, people were still struggling to afford housing, marriage, or a better quality of life. Skyrocketing property prices and living expenses made it especially difficult for Chinese youth to achieve financial security.

Health has also taken a toll, with multiple reports of young workers in their twenties collapsing and dying after prolonged periods of overwork. While companies have denied any direct link to working hours, the incidents have fuelled speculation around chronic exhaustion. This is not unsimilar to the case of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, who died just months after joining Ernst & Young in Pune. Her parents condemned the firm's 'glorification of overwork' and lack of employee support for her daughter's death.

China's Labour Law limits working hours to 8 hours per day and 40 per week, allowing up to 36 hours of overtime per month.
In 2021, the Supreme People's Court and the Ministry of Human Resources ruled the 996 schedule illegal, citing labour disputes where workers had died or been wrongfully dismissed over overtime.

President Donald Trump on Friday signed executive orders to bolster US defenses against threatening drones and to boost electric air taxis and supersonic commercial aircraft and supersonic commercial aircraft, the White House said. In the three executive orders, Trump sought to enable routine use of drones beyond the visual sight of operators – a key step to enabling commercial drone deliveries – and take steps to reduce the U.S. reliance on Chinese drone companies and begin testing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Trump is establishing a federal task force to ensure US control over American skies, expand restrictions over sensitive sites, expand federal use of technology to detect drones in real time and provide assistance to state and local law enforcement. Trump also aims to address the 'growing threat of criminal terrorists and foreign misuse of drones in US airspace,' said Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. 'We are securing our borders from national security threats, including in the air, with large-scale public events such as the Olympics and the World Cup on the horizon.' Sebastian Gorka, senior director of counterterrorism at the National Security Council, cited the use of drones in Russia's war in Ukraine and threats to major U.S. sporting events. 'We will be increasing counter-drone capabilities and capacities,' Gorka said. 'We will increase the enforcement of current laws to deter two types of individuals: evildoers and idiots.' The issue of suspicious drones also gained significant attention last year after a flurry of drone sightings in New Jersey. The FAA receives more than 100 drone-sighting reports near airports each month. Drone sightings have at times disrupted flights and sporting events. Trump also directed the Federal Aviation Administration to lift a ban imposed in 1973 on supersonic air transport over land. 'The reality is that Americans should be able to fly from New York to L.A. in under four hours,' Kratsios said. 'Advances in aerospace engineering, material science and noise reduction now make overland supersonic flight not just possible, but safe, sustainable and commercially viable.' The Trump orders do not ban any Chinese drone company, officials said. Last year, former President Joe Biden signed legislation that could ban China-based DJI and Autel Robotics from selling new drone models in the US. US President Donald Trump on Friday said that representatives from his cabinet will meet with those of China in London June 9 to discuss a trade deal. In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump said, "I am pleased to announce that Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, will be meeting in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Representatives of China, with reference to the Trade Deal." The President said that "the meeting should go very well". The announcement comes just a day after Trump spoke to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in a rare leader-to-leader call amid weeks of escalating trade tensions over his sweeping global tariffs and battle over critical minerals. Donald Trump had posted on social media that his one-and-a-half-hour-long phone call with Xi had a "positive conclusion". "There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products. Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined. We will be represented by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer," Trump had said. Earlier, the US President said that it was "extremely hard" to reach a deal with Xi as he ramped up his global trade war by doubling tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. "I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!" he posted on his Truth Social platform. China has been at the centre of Trump's tariffs, with Beijing being slapped with 145 per cent levies on its goods. Beijing was prompted to hit back at the US with 125 per cent tariffs on its goods. On May 12, the two countries arrived at a 90-day deal to roll back some of the tit-for-tat tariffs they placed on each other since Trump's presidential inauguration in January. The US lowered its tariffs on Chinese goods from 145 per cent to 30 per cent. In exchange, China dropped its levies on American goods from 125 per cent to 10 per cent. However, the temporary deal did not address the wider concerns that strain China and the US' bilateral ties. From the illegal fentanyl trade to the status of a democratically governed Taiwan, and Washington's complaints about Beijing's dominant and export-driven economic model, none of these they said were addressed. Earlier this week, the Chinese Commerce Ministry had also accused the US of violating their recent trade deal by taking "multiple discriminatory restrictive measures against China". These measures included the recent AI chip export controls, halt of sales of chip design software to China and the revoking of visas of Chinese students in the US. (with inputs from agencies)
