Coimbatore Corporation to set up lounges for 108 staff and gig workers

Coimbatore Corporation has passed a special resolution to create lounges for ambulance drivers and staff attached to the 108 emergency service. The announcement was made by Mayor K. Ranganayaki, who presided over the council meeting held at Victoria Town Hall on Thursday. According to the Mayor, the facilities will be established in each of the city's five zones to ensure accessibility for personnel across different areas. Each facility will include basic amenities such as seating, drinking water, toilets, and shaded resting areas. An allocation of ₹1 crore has been made for the development of these facilities, she said. Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran announced separate lounges for gig workers involved in food and e-commerce delivery services. These lounges are likely to be established on Avinashi Road and DB Road, with a feasibility study currently under way, he said. Other than the council subjects, discussions were also held on the recent Government Order (GO) regarding the hike in penalty charges for buildings constructed without approval. As per the GO, which came into effect from July this year, the penalty has been increased to ₹88 per square foot for residential buildings and ₹110 per square foot for non-residential structures, up from the earlier ₹20–₹25 per square foot. Several councillors sought a reversal of the hike and urged the Commissioner to take up the matter with higher officials. The Commissioner informed the council that the issue would be discussed with senior authorities. Ahead of the meeting, Ward 84 Councillor R. Alima Begum staged a sit-in protest demanding the removal of the ABC centre at Ukkadam. Residents from Rose Park (ward 86) also gathered at the venue, raising concerns over the lack of drainage and road facilities in their locality. A total of 58 resolutions were tabled during the meeting, all of which were passed.

Sebi confirms Gensol fraud, finds promoters diverted funds, falsified records

Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Monday passed a confirmatory order against Gensol Engineering and its promoter-directors Anmol Singh Jaggi and Puneet Singh Jaggi upholding the April order that had prima facie found them indulging in fund diversion and falsifications of documents. In a 33-page order, the regulator noted that the company and Jaggi brothers failed to effectively rebut the findings of the April 15 interim order regarding falsification of Conduct Letters and diversion/ mis-utilisation of funds by the listed solar EPC and EV leasing firm. I also note that a detailed investigation in this matter is being carried out. Further, a forensic auditor has already been appointed to examine the books of accounts of Gensol and its related parties. The concrete findings of the investigation and the forensic auditor are yet to emerge. As has been submitted by Noticees themselves, the findings of the forensic audit will serve to corroborate the factual position and provide greater clarity on the matters under scrutiny," the order said. Sebi rejected the arguments put forward by the brothers who challenged the order saying that it was not warranted. The investigation began in June 2024 following a complaint alleging price manipulation and fund misuse. Sebi's probe revealed that Gensol submitted fake Conduct Letters to credit rating agencies ICRA and CARE Ratings , purportedly issued by lenders IREDA and PFC, to conceal debt servicing defaults. These letters were later disowned by the lenders. Live Events A major concern highlighted by Sebi was the diversion of funds from term loans amounting to Rs 977.75 crore, mostly meant for the purchase of 6,400 electric vehicles (EVs). Gensol claimed it procured 4,704 EVs, costing Rs 567.73 crore, yet transferred Rs 775 crore to Go-Auto—the alleged supplier—leaving over Rs 207 crore unaccounted. The trail of funds, according to Sebi, showed that money sent to Go-Auto was routed back to Gensol and then allegedly diverted to entities controlled by the Jaggi family. Notably, part of the funds was used to purchase luxury real estate, including an apartment in DLF's premium Camellias project, and for personal expenses such as foreign currency purchases and luxury goods. Additionally, Sebi noted that Gensol misled the public by announcing pre-orders for 30,000 EVs that were in fact non-binding MoUs, and its Pune-based EV manufacturing facility showed no active production during inspections. The regulator has confirmed restrictions placed on the company and its promoters from accessing the securities market. It has also directed a forensic audit of Gensol and related entities. Sebi's findings suggest serious breaches of the SEBI Act, 1992, PFUTP Regulations, and LODR norms, including misuse of shareholder funds and inadequate disclosures on related party transactions. The matter remains under further investigation.

Maharashtra govt to launch app-based transport service

The Maharashtra state government is currently evaluating the potential implementation of an app-based passenger vehicle service aimed at generating employment opportunities for the youth of Maharashtra. According to an official release, "the app-based rickshaw, taxi, and e-bike services for passenger transport will now not be limited to private companies. It is proposed to give one of the names, such as 'Jai Maharashtra', ' Maha-Ride ', 'Maha-Yatri', or 'Maha-Go', to this app, which will be launched in collaboration with the Transport Department ." This information was given by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik . With the final approval of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and both Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, he expressed confidence that the said government app will be operational soon. Minister Sarnaik said that "discussions have been started" with private companies, including ' Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology ' and 'Mitra', to develop the app under this initiative. It includes all the necessary elements to maintain transparency in the system, and the app will be ready soon. Through this, special financial support will be provided to Marathi youth. To provide employment to unemployed youth, a loan will be offered at an interest rate of 10 per cent through Mumbai Bank for the purchase of vehicles, as per the release. This was assured by Mumbai Bank Chairman Praveen Darekar. He stated that, with the assistance of Mumbai Bank, financial support will be available to unemployed youth. Additionally, an 11 per cent interest refund will be provided in the form of a subsidy by Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Bhatke Vimukta Corporation, OBC Corporation, and MSDC. Therefore, this loan is interest-free, as per the release. Minister Sarnaik further stated that the regulations for this app are in the final stage, as per the Aggregator Guidelines of the Central Government. "Currently, private organisations are making huge profits through unauthorised apps. For this, those companies are looting drivers and passengers. Since the government has ample machinery, technology, and manpower, if it develops such an app, it will benefit not only the passengers but also the drivers." In this regard, a meeting has been organised by the concerned parties at the Ministry on August 5. MLA Praveen Darekar, a technician involved in app creation, and government officials will be present at this meeting, where the government app will receive its final form, the release stated.
