Sabah records highest number of agricultural holdings in Malaysia
KOTA KINABALU (July 15): Sabah has the highest number of agricultural holdings in Malaysia, recording a total of 159,259, according to the Interim Report of the 2024 Sabah Agriculture Census released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on Tuesday.
The launching ceremony of the report was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister I cum Sabah Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
Also present was Chief Statistician of Malaysia and Commissioner of the 2024 Agriculture Census, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, alongside heads of departments and representatives from federal and state agriculture agencies.
Jeffrey said the majority of the holdings are in the crops sub-sector, accounting for 140,018 holdings, followed by capture fisheries (14,903), livestock (2,242), aquaculture (2,164), and forestry and logging (162).
The data also highlights the demographic landscape of Sabah's agricultural sector, which consists of 156,635 individual holdings. Notably, over 70 per cent of these individual farmers are aged 46 and above. About 35 per cent of them reported having no formal education or academic qualifications.
'This provides us with a clear picture of Sabah's current agricultural profile. It also underscores the urgency to craft targeted and inclusive policies that will attract younger generations to participate in this sector,' Jeffrey said.
The Interim Report on Agricultural Labour revealed that 325,805 individuals are involved in agricultural activities across the state. This figure comprises 136,030 active owners and partners, 160,415 salaried workers and 28,676 unpaid family workers.
In terms of cultivated land, Sabah recorded 1.782 million hectares in 2023. Of this, 1.574 million hectares or 88.3 per cent were harvested areas, mostly under corporate agricultural holdings, particularly in oil palm plantations.
The sector also contributed significantly to Sabah's economy, recording total sales of RM25.06 billion in 2023.
Organisational or corporate agricultural holdings contributed the lion's share at 81.5 per cent, while individual holdings accounted for 18.5 per cent.
The crops sub-sector contributed 82 per cent of total sales, followed by livestock (7.9 per cent), capture fisheries (5.9 per cent), forestry and logging (3.0 per cent) and aquaculture (1.1 per cent).
Sabah remains among the top contributors to the nation's agricultural performance. It accounts for 17.4 per cent of national crop sub-sector sales, ranking within the top four states. For capture fisheries, Sabah is among the top three contributors with 13.8 per cent, while forestry and logging contributed 19.6 per cent of the national output.
At the district level, Keningau recorded the highest number of individual agricultural holdings in Sabah with 14,100, followed by Ranau (12,862) and Kota Marudu (12,627). In terms of sales value, Kinabatangan led with RM4.15 billion, followed by Tawau (RM3.93 billion) and Lahad Datu (RM3.50 billion).
Meanwhile, Uzir said that DOSM has published 15 Interim Reports of the 2024 Agriculture Census at the national level, detailing statistics for the overall agricultural sector and five specific sub-sectors, crops (both agri-commodity and agro-food), livestock, fisheries, aquaculture and forestry and logging.
Additionally, 14 more detailed reports have been released covering specific commodities and sectors including oil palm, rubber, paddy, pineapple, kenaf, cocoa, pepper, fruits, vegetables, other crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture and forestry and logging.
Uzir also stressed the importance of integrated digital data management in agriculture. DOSM has developed TaniStats, an integrated digital platform combining data from the 2024 Census, upstream and downstream sector statistics, food security indicators, the MyAgroPrice dashboard, and other agricultural data sources. He emphasised the need for inter-agency cooperation to keep the system updated and fully utilised.
Looking ahead, besides conducting the Agriculture Census every 10 years, DOSM plans to introduce short-term agricultural surveys starting in 2026 to ensure statistics remain relevant and responsive to current trends.
In the context of regional leadership, Malaysia will chair the 15th ASEAN Community Statistical System Committee (ACSS15) in 2025 to further strengthen regional statistical cooperation for sustainable development.
On the international front, Malaysia has achieved a milestone by ranking first globally in the Open Data Inventory (ODIN) 2024/25 report, surpassing 198 other countries, a significant leap from its 67th position in 2022/23.
In line with this achievement, the government has declared October 20 as National Statistics Day (MyStats Day), themed 'Statistics: The Pulse of Life'. The Fourth World Statistics Day will also be celebrated on October 20, 2025, themed 'Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone.'
Public access to data is available through OpenDOSM NextGen, a digital platform offering data catalogues and visualisations, accessible at https://open.dosm.gov.my.

M'sian economy set for steady growth in H2'25: Kenanga IB
KUALA LUMPUR: Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd (Kenanga IB) expects Malaysia's economy to maintain steady growth in the second half of 2025 (H2'25) led by services and construction, particularly following final government approval for the Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 mega infrastructure project. In a research note yesterday, the bank said the outlook is supported by advanced GDP estimates for the second quarter of 2025 (Q2'25), which were in line with its projections, reflecting sustained growth in services despite continued contraction in mining and a slowdown in manufacturing. 'However, prolonged commodity weakness and persistent tariff risks will continue to weigh on overall growth. That said, we maintain our 2025 GDP growth forecast at 4.3% (2024: 5.1%),' it said. Last Friday, the Department of Statistics Malaysia reported that the economy is forecast to grow by 4.5% in the Q2'25 based on advance GDP estimates, slightly outpacing the 4.4% growth recorded in the previous quarter. Robust domestic demand is expected to drive growth despite global headwinds. Meanwhile, Kenanga IB said it is maintaining its 2025 exports forecast at 3.1% (2024: 5.7%), amid ongoing US President Donald Trump's tariff policies and weak commodity exports. 'While US trade tensions have eased following the recent deal, uncertainty persists, particularly if major economies retaliate. This could disrupt global trade and weigh on Malaysia's growth outlook,' it said. Additionally, the bank said the ongoing US-Malaysia trade negotiations are contributing to further ambiguity, especially as Malaysia's tariff rates remain higher than those of Indonesia's (19%) and Vietnam's (20%). Kenanga IB shared that exports grew 3.8% in H1'25 compared with 5.4% in January-May, slightly above its full-year forecast. However, growth slowed to 3.4% in Q2'25 (Q1'25: 4.3%). 'June's underperformance reflects continued volatility in external trade, with short-term prospects clouded by uncertainty over tariffs and commodity shipments, along with weaker-than-expected pre-tariff front-loading,' it said. The bank also noted that demand for electrical and electronics (E&E) products is expected to remain resilient, supported by new product launches and growing demand for 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, although overall growth is likely to be modest. Despite external demand uncertainties, CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd projects resilient domestic economic activity and is maintaining its 2025 GDP growth forecast of 4.2%. 'Looking at both GDP and trade data, we suspect that the softening growth in Q2'25 may mark the start of a slowdown in external demand. 'We expect H2'25 to be a challenging period given tariff risks and external uncertainties, particularly following the recently revised US tariff of 25% on Malaysian exports,' it said. However, on a positive note, the securities firm views the tariff implementation date as a moving goalpost, given Trump's open stance on negotiations, which could provide extended support for exports. It said that domestic growth, supported by both spending and investment, will be underpinned by labour market reforms such as wage hikes, policy rate cuts amid low inflation, higher foreign tourist arrivals, and renewed investment momentum. – Bernama

Malaysia's Q2 2025 economic growth hits 4.5% under MADANI reforms
KUALA LUMPUR: The projected 4.5% economic growth for the second quarter of 2025 highlights the success of the Madani Government's reform agenda, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He attributed the positive outlook to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership in revitalising the economy and improving public welfare. Nga stated, 'Despite increasingly challenging global pressures, steady domestic demand along with growing consumer and investor confidence reflect the effectiveness of the government's approach.' The Department of Statistics Malaysia's preliminary estimates show an improvement from the 4.4% growth recorded in the previous quarter. The construction sector is leading the expansion with an expected 11.0% growth, fuelled by non-residential and housing projects. Meanwhile, the services sector is forecast to grow by 5.3%, up from 5.0%, while manufacturing recorded a 3.8% increase. Nga credited domestic demand for the strong performance, supported by government initiatives such as the Basic Rahmah Contribution (SARA), Cash Rahmah Contribution (STR), and higher minimum wages. 'These measures have boosted income and purchasing power,' he said. However, he cautioned that external risks like global trade tensions and tariff wars remain concerns. 'The Madani Government remains committed to ensuring inclusive economic growth and the well-being of all Malaysians,' he added. Nga also welcomed Bank Negara Malaysia's decision to lower the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) to 2.75%, calling it a proactive move to support economic activity, particularly in real estate. - Bernama

Several world leaders to attend 47th Asean Summit, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Several world leaders including those from Asia, Europe, Canada, the United States, Africa and Latin America are expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking at a meeting with the Prime Minister's Department staff here on Monday (July 21), Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that so far, among those who have expressed their commitment to attend are leaders from Italy, the European Union, Canada and the United States. "It (the Asean Summit) will be a major international conference for Malaysia," he said. On July 8, Anwar said several heads of government from outside Asean had confirmed their attendance at the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits scheduled to be held from Oct 26 to 28. Among the leaders who have confirmed their attendance are Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whom Anwar met in Rome on July 3, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also currently President of the G20 Group. Anwar said that his visits abroad were not for tourism, but rather in Malaysia's capacity as Asean Chair this year, apart from fulfilling invitations from several world leaders. "I am among the prime ministers who have travelled abroad the most. Coincidentally, Malaysia is Asean chairman this year," he said Expressing confidence in the services of civil servants including the national security forces based on the excellent performance shown during the recent Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Asean-China Summits, Anwar is confident that the Asean Summit in October would be held successfully. "If you look at the performance (of the services) of civil servants, police, Immigration Department and airports at Asean-GCC and Asean-China, I am confident in our ability to provide the best for our country," he said. Anwar said the confidence was based on Malaysia's improved ranking in the World Competitiveness Report by the Institute for Management Development, from 34th in 2024 to 23rd in 2025. The Prime Minister said the improved ranking also reflected the international community's confidence in Malaysia's administrative capabilities. The 46th Asean Summit held in Kuala Lumpur in May also featured the second Asean GCC as well as the first-ever Asean-GCC-China Summit. Malaysia as the 2025 Asean Chairmanship with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' hosted the 46th Asean Summit and related meetings from May 22 to 27. – Bernama
