THE HISTORY OF ALDI
The German discount supermarket chain came to Ireland in 1999.
Aldi's first few shops opened in November 1999, with locations in Sandyford, Dublin, and Ballincollig, Cork.
By the mid-2000s, Aldi bosses had opened numerous stores, focusing on providing high-quality products at low prices.
As the recession hit 2008-2012, Aldi's popularity grew as consumers became more price-conscious.
The supermarket giant continued it's expansion in Ireland between 2013-2018, while refurbishing existing stores.
By 2018, Aldi had over 130 shops throughout the country.
The chain began to focus on expanding its range of Irish-made products and supporting local producers.
In 2023, Aldi had over 140 stores in Ireland.
The store invested in sustainability initiatives, such as reducing plastic packaging and increasing the availability of organic and eco-friendly products.
Aldi chiefs said: 'At Aldi we are committed to supporting Irish suppliers. Developed in partnership with Bord Bia, Grow with Aldi is designed to help the very best Irish suppliers develop their brand.
'To date, we've invested €10 million in our Grow with Aldi development programme in a bid to find the very best Irish suppliers.
'As a result, for a limited time only there are over 47 new products, from 27 Irish suppliers available in store.'
Aldi have introduced technological advancements with self-checkout systems and contactless payment options.

The horror unfolded as an unexpected storm rolled in HOLIDAY HORROR Brit couple on holiday in Spain swept to their deaths by 'massive wall of water' that rushed through gorge A YOUNG couple drowned in flash floods while hiking after a "massive wall of water" appeared within "seconds", an inquest heard. Alexander Barrett, 32, and Sarah Thompson, 26, were on holiday in Majorca with a group of friends when tragedy struck on September 3, last year. The couple, from Offerton, near Stockport in Manchester, were swept away. Spanish rescue teams discovered Sarah's body the following day. Specialist officers located Alexander's on September 6, in the Torrent de Pareis canyon, in the Tramuntana mountains. Advertisement At the inquest, Sarah's devastated father Peter Thompson, said his daughter "was never without a smile on her face". And Alexander's heartbroken dad, Paul Rodman, told how his son "loved life". Paying tribute, he said: "He was genuinely a good person, a caring person, a kind person. "The friends and family have developed a little saying, 'Be more like Alex' because that's what we aspire to be. Advertisement "He's missed so much by all his friends and family." Alexander's friend Luke Weaver, who was on the trip with the tragic couple said: "We all had a mutual passion for climbing and hiking." Bank boss & dad-of-three, 43, drops dead after repeatedly scaling mountain six times in crazy 'EVERESTING' challenge He told the inquest how the group had planned a three hour expedition, which was known to be "challenging in places". Mr Weaver had already completed the route several times, but neither Alexander nor Sarah had. Advertisement The fellow climbing instructor, who had worked with Alexander, said he checked weather predictions in the morning. He knew the gorge had flooded, but the forecast only showed rain hitting at 6pm, by which time they'd no longer be in the area. "Had I known what was to happen, I would never have let them into the gorge," Mr Weaver added. The hiker dropped the group off by car, but was delayed in joining them due to hitting traffic while trying to park. Advertisement He noticed it starting to rain at around 2.30pm but became concerned when a storm moved in shortly after. Mr Weaver said he saw his friends, who were now with a German couple and two Spanish nationals, in a "bottleneck" between two boulders. "At this point the heavens opened," he said. "At this time the water was flowing like a small river." Advertisement He went to help the group and asked Sarah if she was "OK" and she replied yes but with a "nervous smile". "Seconds later a massive wall of water came down the gorge," Mr Weaver said. "The water appeared to come from nowhere. The sound was incredibly loud, people were screaming." Mr Weaver told the inquest he saw one person clinging onto a rock, but one of the Spanish nationals had been swept away. Advertisement His partner managed to get out of the water and after a few minutes others emerged gasping for air above the surface. Survivors were airlifted out of the gorge by helicopter, suffering only minor injuries. But Alexander and Sarah had been taken by the current, the inquest heard. Mr Weaver added: "Everyone who survived that day is incredibly lucky, especially those who got caught in the water. Advertisement "I have never experienced anything like this and it is something I will never forget." Post-mortem examinations gave the cause of death as drowning for both of the deceased. Jyoti Gill, assistant coroner for Manchester South, recorded a verdict of accidental death caused by drowning for the couple. "It appears water dragged Sarah, and Alex had tried to help her," Ms Gill concluded. Advertisement "Sadly, both Sarah and Alex were unable to climb to safety and were swept away by the floodwaters," she added. Sarah had represented Cumbria at fell running in national competitions. She earned a degree in photography from Manchester Metropolitan University, and had recently been promoted in the donations team at The Christie hospital in Manchester.

I transformed my council house bathroom for £30 – I ‘absolutely hated' it and now it's my favourite room
ONE woman showed off an impressive DIY project she carried out in her council house. Using just £30 worth of materials, she was able to completely transform bathroom. 2 TikTok user Natasha showed her followers what her bathroom looked like before she got to work Credit: TikTok / @natashalawson20 In her viral video, TikTok user Natasha Lawson (@natashalawson20) showed 1.3 million viewers how she elevated the half bath in her home. On a mission to turn her "council house into a home," the TikToker is carrying out a series of DIY projects throughout the space. This included doing up the guest bathroom on a penny-pinching budget. New floor She spent the bulk of her budget on vinyl to transform the floor, opting for a rustic wooden pattern. "This job has been long coming for a while now because I absolutely hate my bathroom," Natasha told her followers. After ripping up the old vinyl, which was splattered with paint, she got to work. The TikToker carefully cut and laid out the new vinyl flooring, before trimming the edges and applying a sealant to protect it from trapped moisture. "I thought it would look so nice with the green and then obviously the marble as well," Natasha said, adding that it is now her "favourite room in the house". While she was intially hesitant if the vinyl would work as "the main flooring", the mum revealed that it "actually held really well". Finishing touches She also carried out other finishing touches including using the £2 Crowne Matchpot Breath Easy from Wicke's to create neater lines after her paint job. My council flat is so stylish thanks to second-hand finds - plus the treasure chest place you need to look for bargains Natasha also used her steady hand to paint the wooden block "under the toilet". And she applied a layer of gloss to the skirting boards in the bathroom. She also added some decor throughout the space, including a clock on the wall, a candle holder on the window sill, and a wax burner she picked up for just 99p from Aldi. Then Natasha stood back and admired "how much nicer" the room looked. She shared a side by side comparison of the transformation for her audience to see. How to do your council house up on the cheap Take inspiration from pricier shops and head to B&M, Home Bargains for interior decorations. Head to YouTube for easy to follow tutorials on how to decorate rather than paying for professionals. For a quick glow-up for your floors or anywhere with tiles, opt for stick-on vinyl to save on costs. A lick of paint does wonders to make a room feel brand-new. Switch out kitchen cupboard knobs for modern ones instead of buying brand-new cupboards. The bathroom was origingally painted in a "washed out" grey, which she explained was the reason why she hated it. Natasha shared her plans to add a black matte shelf with hanging plants at some point. Her followers shared their thoughts on the transformation in the comments section. "I love it, I'm going to do it now you've done it," wrote one impressed viewer. "Love the bathroom," agreed another follower. "You've done amazing," commented a third person. And the bathroom makeover isn't the only DIY work Natasha has carried out in her home, she used an Ikea mirror trick to give the space a luxury finish. More on council houses And another woman revealed that she is nowhere near finished her council house renovation despite already spending £15,000. One TikToker did up the hallway of her council house using all B&Q buys. Another woman used buys from B&M and Shein to decorate her council house. A 21-year-old mum bagged her dream home after rejecting every council house on offer.
