‘Review perks of rural docs'

SANDAKAN: The lack of incentives for doctors serving in rural areas discourages them from working in challenging locations, prompting calls to review their allowances, says Datuk James Ratib. The State Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister said that while basic salaries for doctors had been raised, their rural allowances had been 'frozen,' resulting in no significant difference in compensation between those working in rural and urban settings. He said this after launching the Sandakan-level Kaamatan Festival at the Sandakan Community Hall on Saturday (May 17). 'I am urging the Federal Government, especially the Health Ministry, to reconsider this decision, as it affects the willingness of doctors to work in remote areas,' he said. James noted that the difficult working conditions, including limited facilities and housing challenges, add to the struggles faced by doctors in rural areas, making it harder to retain medical personnel in places like Sabah and Sarawak. James, who also oversees community wellbeing, said that finding suitable housing for doctors in rural areas was a persistent issue, as many are reluctant to move due to the lack of proper accommodation.
Advertisement Meanwhile, James said that Sabah had received 100 additional dialysis machines for government hospitals and health clinics across the state, including six for the Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK) in Sandakan. He said the new machines would complement the existing units and replace faulty ones. James also thanked the Sabah government, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, for approving the funding for these machines. He added that the Sandakan Hospital would be upgraded to a state-level facility, with an estimated RM400mil allocated for the project under the 13th Malaysia Plan. 'The preliminary work, costing around RM400,000, is already underway, and the project has received federal approval in principle. Terengganu DVS to deploy 110 officers to monitor ‘ibadah korban'
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) will deploy 110 officers to monitor the implementation of 'ibadah korban' (animal sacrificial rituals) in conjunction with Aidiladha on July 7. Its director Dr Anun Man said that the deployment aims to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and to prevent the spread of potential diseases. She added that monitoring will be conducted at slaughter locations such as mosques, public fields, surau, and community halls where 40 or more livestock are involved. 'Every year, we issue permits for between 6,000 and 7,000 animals. With the number of officers available, it's impossible to cover all locations - we can only monitor about 30 per cent. 'Therefore, we are focusing on sites where more than 40 animals are slaughtered. Our staff will ensure that the entire slaughtering process complies with the SOPs. We have also issued a workflow chart to guide the process,' she told reporters after the Terengganu-level public awareness campaign on economically impacting and zoonotic ruminant livestock diseases. The campaign was officiated by state Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee deputy chairman Hilmi Harun. Meanwhile, Dr Anun said that her department has also intensified enforcement activities to curb cattle smuggling ahead of Aidiladha. She noted that 20 veterinary enforcement personnel and officers have been deployed through Ops Mega, which runs from May 9 to June 8. 'The identified hotspot areas include state borders, particularly in the Besut, Setiu, and Kemaman districts,' she added. 'The purpose of Ops Mega is to combat illegal transfer and slaughter activities conducted without the department's permission,' she said.

Melaka records 530 dengue cases
MELAKA: A total of 530 dengue cases were recorded in Melaka during the Jan 1 to May 24 period, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said of this number there were 347 cases in Melaka Tengah, Jasin (124 cases) and Alor Gajah (59 cases). 'During this period, 16 dengue outbreaks were reported and the state government cannot remain silent as dengue fever cases pose a threat to Melakans. 'All clean-up steps including gotong-royong programmes are very important in breaking the breeding chain of the Aedes mosquitoes,' he told reporters after officiating the Melaka-level Mega Gotong-Royong to Combat Aedes Programme, held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme for the Sungai Udang state assembly, at the Desa Tun Razak Malaysian Armed Forces Quarters in Sungai Udang here today. The event was also attended by the state assembly coordinator, who is also the senior state executive councillor for Housing, Local Government, Climate Change, Drainage and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasin. Elaborating further, Ab Rauf said all community leaders, state assemblymen, and local authorities (PBTs) are urged to intensify phased gotong-royong programmes in their respective areas every month. He said, for example, this effort can be carried out through the implementation of the 'One Hour Every Saturday, Take Time to Find and Destroy Aedes Mosquito Breeding Places' campaign, which is also organised by the state Health Department as a collective effort to eradicate the dengue threat at its roots. 'Melaka has proven its success in various aspects such as investment, tourism and we must also prove our success as a clean, healthy and dengue-free state,' he also said. He added that maintaining cleanliness and environmental health is everyone's responsibility and not just the responsibility of authorities like the PBTs.
