UK student visa applications up 29% in 2025 despite stricter rules
The number of international students applying for study visas to the UK rose sharply in the first five months of 2025, according to new figures released by the UK Home Office, even as the government tightens post-study work rules.
Between January and May 2025, 76,400 students applied for UK study visas — a 29% increase compared to the same period in 2024. In May alone, there were 18,500 study visa applications, up 19% from May last year.
This is the first set of official data published since the government announced changes to the Graduate Route, cutting the post-study work period from two years to 18 months. The rise suggests the policy shift has not yet deterred applicants.
'The surge in applications suggests that fears of the impact of the immigration White Paper may have been avoided, mainly thanks to the preserved post-study work offer,' said Ruth Arnold, director of external affairs at Study Group, a global education provider.
She also pointed to growing restrictions in competing destinations. 'More students are turning to the UK as a safer, more stable option,' she told Times Higher Education, a London-based publication covering global higher education trends.
The White Paper, released last month, introduced a series of reforms that make it tougher for international students and their families to remain in the UK long-term.
Key changes include:
* The qualifying period for settlement has doubled from five years to ten
* English language requirements now apply to more categories, including dependants
* Improvement in English will be monitored during the visa period
* Skills requirements have been raised to degree level for most work and study routes
'Skill requirements raised to degree level; English language requirements across all routes – including for dependents; the time it takes to acquire settled status extended from five years to 10; and enforcement tougher than ever because fair rules must be followed,' said Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a press briefing at Downing Street last month.
This implies students will need to work harder to remain in the UK after graduation.
'The White Paper establishes whole new approaches to migration, be it for education, work, or family,' Mamta Shekhawat, founder of Gradding.com, a student counselling platform told Business Standard. 'The pathway to permanent residency for students will become longer and more competitive, making it harder for graduates to remain in the UK unless they demonstrate exceptional value to the economy or society.'
Sharp decline in dependent visas
The rise in main applicant numbers contrasts with a drop in dependent visa applications. Since restrictions on dependants were introduced in January 2024, fewer family members have applied for UK visas.
* In May 2025, 1,100 dependants submitted applications
* This is down from 1,400 in May 2024 and 7,800 in May 2023
* Between January and May 2025, 6,300 dependent visas were filed
* In the same period last year, the figure stood at 46,700
Meanwhile, Home Office data also shows that total study visa applications over the 12 months leading up to May 2025 from main applicants dropped by 9%.

According to Commission for Air Quality Management, there are 62 lakh EOL vehicles in Delhi, of which 41 lakh are two-wheelers. In 2024, 39,273 EOL vehicles were impounded in Delhi. An official revealed that fuel stations in the city had been equipped with automatic number plate recognition technology to access the centralised Vahan database to identify EOL vehicles and deny them refuelling. Transport expert Anil Chhikara, formerly of Delhi govt's transport department, said the end-of-life policy was enforced without adequate studies. "BS II and BS IV vehicles have similar tailpipe emissions but BS IV vehicles — equipped with emission control sensors and catalytic converters — rarely exceed the pollution certification limits. Yet, they're being scrapped purely on the basis of their age," Chhikara pointed out. "Other states allow age extensions if a vehicle passes automated fitness tests, but Delhi doesn't. That's unfair. My own car, which had run just 36,000km, was scrapped last year despite being in perfect condition."

UK PM Says Britain Commits To NATO 5% Spending Target
United Kingdom: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that Britain was committed to spending five percent of its economic output on defence, in line with a pledge set to be announced by NATO at a summit in the Netherlands. In a statement on the eve of the start of the western group's two-day get-together in The Hague, Starmer said his government would aim to hit the pledge by 2035. "We must navigate this era of radical uncertainty with agility, speed and a clear-eyed sense of the national interest to deliver security for working people and keep them safe," Starmer said. "This is an opportunity to deepen our commitment to NATO and drive greater investment in the nation's wider security and resilience," he added. The UK government said it expects NATO's 32 allies to agree to spend at least 3.5 percent of GDP on core military needs by 2035, and 1.5 on broader security-related items like cybersecurity and infrastructure. The compromise deal aims to placate US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called for America's allies to dramatically ramp up defence spending. NATO chief Mark Rutte has said that spending five percent on defence and security is essential to deter Russian aggression. On Monday, he called the pledge a "quantum leap that is ambitious, historic and fundamental to securing our future". ‘Final decision on 3 languages only after wide-ranging talks'
Mumbai: Bowing to growing criticism of its decision to introduce Hindi as the optional third language in schools from class 1, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said a final decision regarding the three-language formula would be made only after discussions with literary figures, language experts, political leaders, and all other relevant parties. On Sunday poet Hemant Divate announced he was returning his state award to protest against the imposition of Hindi from classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools. The MNS has been holding protests against the school education dept's revised order on introducing Hindi as a third language from class I onwards. Though the govt rolled back its decision to make Hindi mandatory in primary school, the govt resolution issued on June 17 states that while a third language is mandatory, Hindi will no longer be compulsory but in general it will be the third language for classes 1-5 in Marathi and English medium schools. It allowed schools or parents to choose an alternative Indian language and said there will be a teacher for the opted language if at least 20 students in a class go for it. On Monday night a meeting on the three-language formula was held at the CM's official residence Varsha.
