Tourists flock to Dhofar, fueling local trade and enterprise

Salalah – Dhofar is witnessing increased commercial activity across its markets and shopping centres during the 2025 khareef season, driven by a surge in visitor numbers. The uptick in tourism is supporting the local economy and strengthening both the retail and hospitality sectors.
Shoppers are turning out in large numbers at traditional markets and modern malls. Retailers of handicrafts and local delicacies are reporting brisk business, alongside high demand for restaurants, cafes, hotels and leisure services.
Small and medium-sized enterprise owners say the season presents a key opportunity to boost sales and visibility. They emphasised the importance of promoting national products to meet the expectations of a diverse tourist base.
Nour bint Ali al Yafaei, owner of Bint al Janoub, said her business draws on more than three decades of experience in producing incense and perfumes using Dhofari ingredients. 'We opened our first branch in 2020 in Salalah and the second in Al Hafa in 2024 to meet growing demand, especially during khareef when tourists seek out gifts,' she said.
In the gifts and confectioneries segment, Do Chocolate and Flowers has seen a spike in demand. Its range of luxury chocolates, floral arrangements and seasonal offerings continues to attract customers. Owner Rami bin Muslim al Kathiri said his business model reflects the importance of adapting to tourist seasons while contributing to the local retail economy.
Aqeel bin Alawi al Marzaa, founder of Mecca Perfumes, said his business is rooted in Oman's frankincense heritage. With more than 15 branches across the country, the company operates a dedicated factory for frankincense oil extraction and exports, along with integrated production lines. 'We have developed over 150 aromatic products. Tourists are especially drawn to traditional perfumes blended with natural ingredients,' he added.
The food sector is also benefitting from the seasonal upswing. Al Hosni Omani Sweets, which has been producing traditional sweets for decades, now runs more than ten branches in Oman and several others in GCC countries. Founder Tariq bin Salem al Hosni observed that tourists are particularly drawn to Omani halwa and often seek insights into its preparation. 'Halwa remains a symbol of Omani hospitality and sees strong demand during the tourist season,' he said, adding that the business once earned a Guinness World Record for baking the largest cake in the shape of Oman's map.
Tourists and residents agree that the khareef season has helped transform Dhofar into a vibrant commercial hub. Hilal bin Khalaf al Shariqi said local enterprises enrich the tourism experience and called for institutional support to ensure their growth.
'The best thing about the Hafa Beach Market is the blend of heritage and modernity,' said visitor Abdullah bin Salem al Ghaithi. 'Perfumes, incense, sweets and handicrafts occupy the space creating a unique atmosphere, with light rain adding to the charm.'
Majid bin Abdullah al Shariqi observed an increase in demand for seasonal clothing and tropical fruits such as coconut, papaya, pomegranate, banana and mango, as well as camping and travel supplies. He said khareef marks a major shift in local trade patterns.
Abdullah bin Amer al Aisaei, a visitor from the UAE, said the quality of local products and the organisation of Salalah's markets, especially the Hafa Beach Market, stand out. He praised the clarity of pricing and oversight by local authorities. 'But above all, it's the cool, pleasant weather that makes Dhofar a unique destination at this time of year.'

He said that the visit reflects Muscat Municipality's commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of key projects to the highest standards. He noted that the Oman Botanic Garden has reached an advanced stage of completion and serves as a model of integration between environmental development and sustainable urban planning. Once completed, the garden is expected to become one of Oman's most significant natural and cultural landmarks. He also commended the efforts of the project's teams and acknowledged the institutional partnerships between Muscat Municipality and other stakeholders in strengthening infrastructure for sustainability and environmental awareness initiatives. The Oman Botanic Garden also holds scientific and research significance. It serves as a valuable repository of data and a living archive of numerous Omani plant species. Survey efforts at the site have led to the documentation and collection of hundreds of native plants, including the discovery of 20 species that are endemic to the Sultanate and found nowhere else in the world. Muscat Municipality recently opened the 1.4 km dual road on Al Khoud Village Road, with two lanes in each direction and side pedestrian sidewalks, to ensure smooth traffic flow to the Oman Botanic Garden (OBG). The project will cover a distance of 1.5km, linking the Special Tasks Force Roundabout to the Oman Botanic Garden roundabout. The network of secondary roads includes smooth access to the garden, in addition to barrier railings, surface water drainage systems, and other facilities. The Oman Botanic Garden (OBG), located just around 35 km from Muscat International Airport, has been designed to represent the native flora in naturalistic habitats that reflect the rich botanical heritage of the region. Additionally, it serves as a one-stop destination for various avenues such as research, fun, learning, expert interactions, and an extraordinary visitor experience. OBG will offer a cable car experience to visitors for the first time in the country. Other amenities will include open playgrounds, event spaces, and interactive areas. The garden demonstrates a sustainable approach in its design, construction, and operation. The nursery in Oman Botanic Garden serves as the basis for work in the garden, supplying all required plants spread over an area of 20,000 sqm. It includes three covered glasshouses, four greenhouses, shade areas, and open areas.

MUSCAT, JULY 28 Omani drone startup SERB, backed by the Oman Investment Authority (OIA) through Future Fund Oman (FFO), plans to onboard 5,000 drone pilots as part of its mission to build a comprehensive drone management ecosystem in the Sultanate. One of the most prominent drone-based service providers in the country, SERB is currently partnering with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in the development and operation of the 'SERB Platform', a centralized system for drone registration and management. Formally unveiled by the CAA on January 28, 2025, the platform aims to enhance air navigation safety, regulate drone usage, and streamline the permitting process for drone operators. On the first anniversary of its launch, FFO highlighted its partnership with SERB as a model of high-impact economic growth. 'SERB is leading the transformation of drone management in the Sultanate. With support from FFO and strategic collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority, SERB aligns closely with Oman Vision 2040—aiming to enhance airspace safety, foster innovation in drone technology, and support the broad use of drones across the economy,' FFO noted in an Impact Report compiled by Oxford Business Group. As part of its strategic goal to foster skills development and industry growth, SERB aims to initially onboard around 5,000 drone pilots. It has also laid the groundwork for collaboration with 13 government entities to build the regulatory framework underpinning the platform. Once fully operational, the SERB Platform will offer a range of services including safe zone identification to help drone operators locate authorized areas for activities, a registration portal to simplify drone registration and permit acquisition, air traffic management capabilities to ensure safe integration into existing airspace, and environmental protection compliance mechanisms to uphold safety standards for people, property, and the natural environment. Looking ahead, SERB has ambitions to expand its regional footprint. 'SERB aims to extend its operations to regional markets, including Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. It plans to onboard major players in drone delivery, broaden the platform's capabilities, and position itself as a leader in technological innovation and ecosystem acceleration,' FFO added. Oman's domestic drone industry has seen strong momentum in recent years, attracting tens of millions of dollars in investment. A wave of startups and tech ventures now specialize in areas such as aerial inspection, precision agriculture, logistics, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure surveying. An increasing number of government ministries, oilfield operators, and logistics companies are partnering with local drone firms to implement innovative services—for example, deploying pesticide-spraying drones in date farms. Regulatory bodies, including the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), have introduced technical standards and frameworks to nurture innovation within the sector. The continued growth of the drone ecosystem also supports youth entrepreneurship and the integration of advanced technologies—such as AI-powered logistics and smart agriculture—into national development strategies.
