PGA Tour star reveals magical gift Rory McIlroy wore for good luck every day before Masters win

RORY MCILROY was wearing an ancient and sacred stone around his neck for good luck in the build-up to his Masters glory.
McIlroy, 36, finally completed his career Grand Slam in April with victory at Augusta, bringing an 11-year wait for the elusive Green Jacket to an end.

But it was something else green that helped him achieve that career high.
The Northern Irishman was sporting a pounamu necklace around his neck every day when he drove up Magnolia Lane.
The precious green stone, which is revered by Maori and New Zealanders, was gifted to him by former New Zealand Prime Minister John Key while on a social golf trip to the country's Tara Iti course last December.
Fellow PGA Tour pro and New Zealand native, Ryan Fox, was along on that golf trip too and told the media about McIlroy's good luck charm for the Masters.
He said this week: "Yeah, when we played last year at Tara Iti, he was gifted a pounamu by John Key.
"Rors kind of said to me the first time I saw him after Augusta, and I'd just won Myrtle Beach [Classic], as well, 'John had gifted me that and I felt like it was good luck. I wore it down Magnolia Lane every day.'
"John actually texted me a photo of him in a golf cart with Rory wearing his pounamu, which was really cool.'
He added: "[Key] explains what it means a lot better than what I can, but it's a mark of prestige. We call it 'mana' [spiritual power and charisma].
"It was a pretty cool thing for John to do and obviously it meant a lot to Rory. It was a nice little story that he had a little bit of Kiwi on him when he was at Augusta.'
McIlroy seems to have an affinity to things down under and, according to Fox, has committed to heading to Australia for the Australian Open this winter.
He added: "Yeah, obviously Rory seems to love our part of the world, he had a great time at Tara Iti last year, and I know he's keen to go back at some point if he can during his busy schedule.
"But it's great to have a little piece of New Zealand [the pounamu] that he loved.
'I've already talked to him about coming down to play the Aussie Open and he can't be more excited about playing Royal Melbourne in a tournament, so that's pretty cool.'

ITV pulls the plug on legendary presenter's big TV comeback by AXING show after just one series - despite star being 'convinced he was on to a winning idea'

ITV bosses have pulled the plug on Noel Edmonds ' latest TV project, Kiwi Adventure, after just one series. The three-part special followed the former Deal Or No Deal host, 76, as he showcased his new life in New Zealand alongside wife Elizabeth Davies, 55. According to The Sun, Noel had hoped the show would become a fixture on the channel – but that dream has now been dashed. A spokesperson for ITV confirmed to the Daily Mail on Thursday: 'There are no current plans for more new episodes but audiences can enjoy the show on ITVX.' The news reportedly comes as a blow to Noel, who believed he was onto a winning formula. A TV insider told The Sun: 'It's a blow to Noel as he was convinced he was on to a winning idea. 'There was a great buzz around the series and it was well received by both viewers and critics alike.' Dubbed the Clarkson's Farm of New Zealand, Kiwi Adventure offered a glimpse into Noel's quirky passions, including his fascination with crystal healing and sustainable living. However, The Sun reported that sources close to the star said extreme weather played a major role in the show's downfall. They revealed: 'River Haven has been hit badly by flooding, it's made working on the estate almost impossible.' The source added that meant filming would have been 'seriously hampered', but as far as Noel is concerned, the show has been 'put on ice'. This marks yet another setback for Noel, whose last big TV comeback was back in 2018 when he entered I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! as ITV's highest-paid contestant – only to be the first star voted off. Noel first shot to fame in the 1970s as a BBC Radio 1 DJ, known for his cheeky on-air style and appeal to younger listeners. His radio success quickly led to a transition into TV, where he became one of the most recognisable faces on British screens. The news reportedly comes as a blow to Noel, who believed he was onto a winning formula. A TV insider told The Sun: 'It's a blow to Noel as he was convinced he was on to a winning idea' He became a household name thanks to long-running hits like Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, The Late, Late Breakfast Show, and Noel's House Party, which introduced the iconic character Mr Blobby and turned Noel into a Saturday night TV staple throughout the 80s and 90s. Earlier this year, ITV teased Noel's Kiwi Adventure as part of its new slate, giving fans a sneak peek into his rural life abroad after leaving the UK in 2018. Noel and wife Liz moved to New Zealand in 2019, where they now own an 800-acre estate in the riverside town of Ngatimoti. The couple have since launched a hospitality business that includes a vineyard, general store, coffee cart, restaurant, and pub.

ITV axe beloved host's big TV return after just one series amid channel's cash crisis and poor viewing figures

NOEL EDMONDS' latest TV comeback has hit the skids as ITV has axed his Kiwi Adventure series. I can reveal the former Deal Or No Deal and Noel's House Party host was hoping the initial three-parter, which followed his new life in New Zealand with wife Liz, would become a fixture on the channel. But the broadcaster has no plans to make further episodes as ratings didn't hit the levels required. A TV insider said: 'It's a blow to Noel as he was convinced he was on to a winning idea. 'There was a great buzz around the series and it was well received by both viewers and critics alike. 'But it needed big numbers to spark a follow-up and attracting 1-1.5million per episode just wasn't enough.' Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure, which aired in June, followed the veteran star's bid to turn his River Haven estate, which features a vineyard, pub and wellness centre, into a success and win over locals in the area. The series, which was compared to Prime Video hit Clarkson's Farm, also focused on Noel's quirky side, including his fascination with crystal healing. Sources close to Noel confirmed his disappointment but insisted other major factors were behind the decision — namely, the extreme weather. A source close to Noel told me: 'River Haven has been hit badly by flooding, it's made working on the estate almost impossible. 'That would have meant filming would have been seriously hampered.' They added: 'As far as Noel is concerned, the show has been put on ice.' Noel Edmonds' most bizarre moments - from 'dead parent' orbs and 'electro smog' to Candice the mannequin and bid to buy the BBC The show's axing comes seven years after Noel's last TV comeback attempt, when he starred in I'm A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! He was the ITV show's big-name signing for 2018 but rather annoyingly, as far as ITV bosses were concerned, he was voted off first. He faced disappointment then and I'm sure he'll bounce back once again. BENN'S 'LUMP' JAB 5 5 BOXER CONOR BENN and ex-footballer Troy Deeney could have sold tickets for this punch-up. Viewers of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins are in for a treat when their fight is shown on Sunday night's episode. The bruisers slug it out in the Channel 4 series' traditional boxing match challenge and despite Conor being a pro fighter, former Watford star Troy gives as good as he gets and is gutted when he loses. Troy says: 'I'm bigger than him. I shouldn't be beating him, that's his game, right? "But I also wanted to show that, hey, I'm not scared of you and I'm ready for the challenge. "But what it did also show me is I got to a point where I get so angry and I go. I'm ready to go to places that I'm ready to lose it all over a fight, which is pathetic.' Conor added: 'I wanted to definitely let him know that just because you're a big lump, you know, I can still take your head off.' Charming… SOPH AND WILF TEAM UP 5 KAY BURLEY's replacement on Sky News Breakfast has finally been revealed. Former Politics Hub host Sophy Ridge and presenter Wilfred Frost will team up on a new breakfast programme in the autumn. Sophy was the lead presenter on the station's last UK election coverage while Wilfred, son of legendary broadcaster Sir David Frost, has been keeping the seat warm since Kay's departure earlier this year. Reports last month claimed under-fire BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty had talks about joining but Sky denied these were significant. A Sky insider said: 'Sophy's interviews are always sharp, calm and clear and Wilf brings a spark with his passion for business and global affairs. 'They have a natural rapport that will shine on screen.' The pair certainly have big shoes to fill. BACK WITH A BANG 5 BEN Mitchell and Stuart Highway are pictured for the first time making their return to EastEnders. I revealed last week Ricky Champ, who plays Stuart, is back in Albert Square to comfort brother Callum (Tony Clay) following the passing of their dad, Jonno. They're seen here attending his funeral along with Ben (Max Bowden), Callum's husband, who's on day release from prison. But given Callum has recently fallen for the charms of Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) while Ben's been locked up, the funeral is likely to play second fiddle to a good old-fashioned East End dust-up. Stuart's life away from Walford with wife Rainie is also exposed, as bosses tease the couple's move from Walford hasn't been plain sailing, which may be a surprise to viewers. After all, there aren't many more depressing places to live than Albert Square. STREAMING service ITVX has just launched the highly anticipated third series of the multi-award-winning comedy series Fisk. Created by and starring one of Australia's favourite comedians, Kitty Flanagan, it promises even more comedy gold than the first two smash hit seasons.

New Zealand take 49-run lead over Zimbabwe with nine wickets in hand

Aug 7 (Reuters) - New Zealand did not take long to gain the upper hand over Zimbabwe on the first day of the second test, skittling out their hosts for 125 before reaching 174-1 in reply in Bulawayo on Thursday. Opener Devon Conway (79) and nightwatchman Jacob Duffy (8) were unbeaten at stumps as New Zealand led by 49 runs. Conway and Will Young put on 162 for the first wicket before Young chopped on a delivery from Trevor Gwandu to be bowled for 74 just before the close. Matt Henry, man of the match in New Zealand's comprehensive first test win, bagged another five-wicket haul with 5-40 in 15 overs while debutant Zakary Foulkes took 4-38 after Zimbabwe won the toss. Brendan Taylor top scored for Zimbabwe with 44, falling just when he looked on course for a successful return to the team at the age of 39. He was back after serving a three-and-a-half-year ban for breaching anti-corruption and anti-doping rules and before the match spoke of overcoming alcohol and drug addiction to revive his test career, which began 21 years ago. "How good is it that three years ago, I couldn't get out of bed and now I am here doing what I love, and that's representing Zimbabwe?" Taylor said in an emotional television interview before the first day's play. "I was in the dark depths of the abyss and trying to just get through this total and incomprehensible demoralisation of life. It was incredibly difficult." He was the fifth Zimbabwe wicket to fall when a ball from Henry looked to stand up on him and he steered an easy catch to Mitchell Santner at extra cover. Wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga made the only other significant contribution with an unbeaten 33. Fast bowler Foulkes was one of three debutants for the Kiwis, whose captain Tom Latham failed a fitness test on a shoulder injury, with Santner deputising for a second successive match. New Zealand won last week's first test, also at the Queens Sports Club, by nine wickets.
