Trouble for India ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 as coach Morkel leaves camp
India suffered a setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as bowling coach Morne Morkel left the team in Dubai and returned home due to personal reasons.
While the exact cause remains unconfirmed, speculation suggests the passing of his father.
Morkel's departure could disrupt India's bowling preparations, with Mohammed Shami struggling for form and Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana lacking experience in ODIs.
Morkel, who has served as India's bowling coach since last August, arrived in the UAE with the Indian team on 15 February and attended the training session at the ICC Academy on 16 February.
However, he was absent from the session on 17 February before reportedly flying back to South Africa.
There is no clarity on whether he will return for the tournament.
India's bowling concerns
Morkel's absence adds to India's concerns, as Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the squad and Shami has been struggling with form.
With India set to face Bangladesh on 20 February, the team, led by Rohit Sharma, is expected to train on 19 February after a scheduled break.
India's squad for Champions Trophy 2025
Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakravarthy.

'Kohli could have played for few more years'
Former Pakistan captains Javed Miandad and Shahid Afridi believe Indian batting great Virat Kohli still had a few good years of Test cricket left in him, but was compelled to retire prematurely due to what they call unfair treatment by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kohli, India's leading batsman in Tests and ODIs for over a decade, retired from the five-day format last month — an announcement many saw as abrupt and unexpected, bringing an end to a glittering red-ball career. Although Kohli's dip in form since 2020 fueled criticism, several voices within the cricketing world, including former Indian captain Anil Kumble, as well as Miandad and Afridi, maintain that Kohli still had the skills, fitness, and passion to continue at the highest level. "There's no denying that Kohli has been a modern-day great, a match-winner, and a fine captain," Miandad told Telecom Asia Sport ( "For him to leave the game he loved so suddenly suggests there's more to the story. In my view, he could have easily played until the end of 2027. Sure, he had a rough patch, but show me a great batsman who hasn't." Miandad hinted at behind-the-scenes tensions as a possible reason for Kohli's exit. "Maybe I'm wrong, but my gut says things weren't right between Kohli and the BCCI. The fact that the board didn't even organize a proper farewell for him says a lot," he added. Afridi echoed Miandad's sentiments, backing Kohli's legacy while criticizing the lack of support from Indian cricket administrators. "You can say a lot about Kohli — he's been fiery, sometimes controversial — but you can't deny what he's done for Indian cricket," Afridi said. "He gave his all for the team and won matches single-handedly. Players like him are rare, and they deserve to be treated differently." Afridi acknowledged Kohli's once-tense relationships with the BCCI and other figures in Indian cricket, but emphasized how much the batsman had evolved. "He used to be hot-headed. I remember even Sunil Gavaskar once asked the BCCI to rein him in. But since his marriage, he's matured a lot. He deserved more respect," Afridi said.

Kolkata to host South Africa Test
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced several key changes to the schedule and venues for the 202425 home season, including updates to the men's and women's international fixtures as well as the 'A' tours. The second Test of the two-match series between India and West Indies, originally set to be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in October, has been shifted to the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In a corresponding change, Kolkata will now host the first Test of the India vs South Africa series - initially planned for Delhi - from November 14 to 18. In the women's cricket calendar, Chennai will no longer host the three ODIs against Australia scheduled for September. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) informed the BCCI of its inability to host the matches due to ongoing pitch and outfield relaying work at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in preparation for the 2026 men's T20 World Cup. As a result, the women's ODI series has been moved to New Chandigarh and Delhi. The newly built PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh will stage the first two games, while the third and final ODI will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The series will take place from September 14 to 20. New Chandigarh was awarded the matches in part to compensate for its removal as a host venue for the upcoming Women's World Cup. In another adjustment, the three one-day matches between India A and South Africa A have been moved from the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Bengaluru has been named as one of five Indian cities to host matches during the Women's World Cup, and it will stage both the opening game and the final - unless Pakistan qualifies, in which case the final will be played in Colombo, along with all other matches involving Pakistan. Furthermore, the BCCI's newly developed facility on the outskirts of Bengaluru, home to the Centre of Excellence, will debut as a first-class venue. It will host two four-day matches between India A and South Africa A from October 30 to November 10.

Salman Agha tipped to become Pakistan's all-format captain
Salman Agha is all set to become Pakistan's all-format national cricket team skipper after impressing selectors and new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, sources told The 31-year-old was appointed Twenty20 international skipper for the Zimbabwe leg of the tour to give regular skipper Mohammad Rizwan rest but Salman has impressed with his clarity of thoughts and resolve in the short period. "Salman has been impressive in the opinions of the selection committee, new head coach Hesson and, above all, the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board Mohsin Naqvi. All are on the same page that he should be the all-format captain," said the sources. A decision is likely to be announced after the Eid holidays. The decision means ODI skipper Mohammad Rizwan has lost favours with the PCB and the selection committee in which the strongest influence is that of Aaqib Javed, added sources. Rizwan was at the loggerheads with Aaqib on the tour of New Zealand where Pakistan lost the ODI series. Rizwan publically criticised lack of authority as skipper in matters of selection on the New Zealand tour. Pakistan lost the ODI series in New Zealand 3-0 which came on the back of a disastrous Champions Trophy 2025 tournament at home where the team crashed out in the first round. Test skipper Shan Masood was also tipped to be sacked after Pakistan lost nine out of 12 Tests under his captaincy since December 2023. Masood's worst phase was a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Bangladesh, Pakistan's first loss against the lowly ranked team. Pakistan also drew a relatively easier series against the West Indies 1-1 last year. That defeat left Pakistan on the ninth and last position of the World Test Championship's third cycle. They finished fifth and seventh in the first two WTC cycles. "Masood's captaincy was unimpressive and timid, so he was destined to lose captaincy. Moreover, Masood's own performance was poor so Salman will also take over from him," the sources said. Pakistan's next tour is of Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series with matches on July 20, 22 and 24. Pakistan then play five T20Is against the West Indies in USA and the Caribbean. As for the Tests, Pakistan hosts South Africa for a two-match Test series in October. In the WTC fourth cycle (2025-2027) Pakistan will also host Sri Lanka and New Zealand while their away series are in Bangladesh, the West Indies and England.
