"Everyone Has A Threshold": Shiv Sena MP On Cross-Border Terrorism
India will no longer tolerate cross-border terrorism and retaliate to any future attacks, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Eknath Shinde has said. His remarks came in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people.
India blamed Pakistan for the assault and followed it with a military response under Operation Sindoor.
"This cannot happen again and again. Everyone has a threshold, and this is ours," Mr Shinde told The National during a diplomatic visit to the UAE. "This is the new normal: if they hit us, we will hit back. And we did, with restraint. Operation Sindoor was a measured response. We targeted only the camps of terrorist organisations."
Launched earlier this month, Operation Sindoor involved missile strikes on nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. About 100 terrorists were killed.
Mr Shinde was in the UAE this week leading an eight-member parliamentary delegation as part of a diplomatic outreach. The UAE was the first stop on his four-nation tour aimed at rallying global support against terrorism. The delegation also includes visits to Liberia, the Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone.
"We are here to reinforce the fact that we all speak the same language when it comes to terrorism," Mr Shinde said. "Terrorism isn't an issue for one country alone; it's a global threat. We must all unite to defeat it," Mr Shinde added, speaking to Khaleej Times.
India and Pakistan exchanged fire for four days following Operation Sindoor, before a ceasefire was declared on May 10.
"The ceasefire was a mutual agreement between India and Pakistan," Mr Shinde clarified. "There's an established mechanism and a hotline between the two countries. Pakistan contacted us and requested the ceasefire, and we responded positively."
India and UAE share strong bilateral ties, which have grown deeper in recent years through cooperation in trade, energy, and security. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), implemented in 2022, has significantly boosted economic engagement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the UAE seven times since taking office.
Mr Shinde suggested the terror attack in Pahalgam may have been an attempt to derail progress and economic revival in Kashmir. "This is peak tourist season. Maybe the terrorists don't like that Kashmir is thriving," he said. "But what's different now is that the people of Kashmir took to the streets to condemn the attack. The mood has changed."
As part of their UAE visit, the delegation visited key cultural and religious landmarks, including the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and Abu Dhabi's BAPS Hindu Mandir - the first traditional stone Hindu temple in the Middle East.

Nagpur: In a proactive move in view of the anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's coronation as per Hindu calendar on June 6 and Bakri Eid the following day, Nagpur Police has rolled out an extensive security plan to ensure peace and harmony. In the backdrop of tensions flaring up between two communities in March over Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb, the police have deployed over 5,000 personnel across the city. Commissioner of police (CP) Ravinder Singal, who chaired a high-level meeting on Friday, outlined a comprehensive strategy to maintain law and order. "Nearly 70 critical and sensitive locations, including places of worship and busy public areas, will be cordoned off to prevent potential disruptions. The police have also intensified night patrolling to ensure round-the-clock vigil," he said. The police have also persuaded several Hindu right-wing outfits to postpone their planned coronation anniversary celebrations to a later date. This step aims to reduce the risk of clashes flaring up again following different narratives put forth over Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The violence in March, following protests by groups like Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal demanding razing of Aurangzeb's tomb, had led to multiple days of curfew and several arrests. "To secure places of worship, 20 key sites — 11 open prayer spaces and nine shrines — have been fortified with layered security. Additionally, 11 slaughterhouses have been provided with dedicated police protection. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has been directed to promptly remove animal remains post-sacrifice to maintain hygiene and avoid potential flashpoints," said the CP. Police stations and traffic units have been instructed to set up checkpoints across the city, while the crime branch has been tasked with responding swiftly to any complaints of communal nature, he said. "Cyber cell has also been put on high alert, intensifying social media monitoring to curb inflammatory posts and misinformation. This follows earlier incidents when inflammatory posts had resulted in escalated tensions. Maharashtra Cyber had acted against 144 inflammatory links in March alone. SC refuses to hear petition on animal sacrifice at Vishalgad
Kolhapur: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear an urgent petition filed against an order passed by Bombay high court allowing animal sacrifice in a dargah at Vishalgad in Kolhapur on Bakri-Eid. The counsel, comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, said the high court had allowed animal sacrifice for Urs from June 8 to June 12. On June 3, a vacation bench of the high court, comprising Justices Dr Neela Gokhale and Firdosh Pooniwalla, noted that a detailed order on June 14, 2024, allowed sacrifice of animals and birds in "a closed and private area" near the Dargah and not in any "open or public place". Meanwhile, a heavy police force was deployed at Vishalgad, ahead of Bakri Eid on Saturday. Superintendent of Kolhapur Police, Yogesh Kumar Gupta, said, "A meeting has been conducted by all the stakeholders from administration like the collector's office, forest department, revenue department, animal husbandry, and police. A heavy police force, along with SRPF troop, has been deployed at the fort. We will follow the court orders. " Members of the Hindu outfits demanded, through a written statement, that the administration should not allow Urus to take place at the fort and that surveillance via CCTV cameras should be maintained at the fort. They insisted that the administration should ensure that slaughtering occurs only in areas permitted by the high court, and that too behind closed doors. The Hindu outfits also demanded immediate cancellation of the proposal to construct a slaughterhouse at Moshi village near Alandi in Pune on a 4-acre plot of land. State medical education minister Hasan Mushrif said on Friday, "Festivals should be celebrated peacefully, and citizens should ensure that the law and order situation is maintained."
