Bell LGBTQ center vandalized with dozens of bags of dog feces
The Mi SELA LGBTQ+ youth resource center, operated by the Latino Equality Alliance, provides a range of community services, including mental health and substance abuse workshops, support groups for parents of LGBTQ+ individuals, and neighborhood clean-ups.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn awarded the center a $2,500 grant to upgrade its security cameras and shared video footage of the center's staff shoveling dozens of dog feces off its awning.
"The fact that this person is going out of their way to do this says everything about them and nothing about our LGBTQ community in Southeast LA," Hahn said in a statement. "This is gross and cowardly. I hope that the people who depend on Mi SELA know how much they are loved and supported in this community and do not take this hate to heart."

On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department (SBCSD) arrested Craig Arthur Simmons, 61, in connection with the dog mauling, after having "conducted surveillance" on his home, the SBCSD's Barstow Station announced in an alert. The arrest took place nearly a month after a 17-year-old girl was mauled by more than 10 dogs in the community of Newberry Springs on July 17. At the time, the girl's parents said she was out jogging when the "large-breed dogs" attacked her, according to authorities. The teen has since been identified locally, and through a GoFundMe campaign, as Tracy. Ahead of Simmons' arrest, police said they saw the suspect riding his bike down a roadway near the home. They interviewed him and then took him into custody, and he was later booked into the High Desert Detention Center. Simmons is accused of violating Code 399(B), Owner of Animal Causing Serious Bodily Injury or Death, according to the SBCSD. The SBCSD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Saturday, Aug. 16. It is not clear if Simmons has legal representation to comment on his behalf. The SBCSD announced last month that authorities learned of the mauling at around 9:52 a.m. local time on July 17. Police said the attack took place about two hours prior. The teen was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, and, after speaking with her parents, police learned the dogs bit her "several times" on her arms and legs. The attack left the girl with "large lacerations, abrasions and removed flesh," per authorities. A witness rescued the teen from the animals. According to the SBCSD, the dogs were "not fenced or leashed at the time of the incident." The San Bernardino Animal Control later seized 16 canines from the area, before the launch of a criminal investigation. At the time of the attack, the teen was traveling to a workout facility near a local community center, ABC 7 Los Angeles reported. While the girl's mother told the outlet she "never thought anything would happen to her," she added that she "couldn't recognize" her daughter after the attack, since she was covered in dirt. "What was going through my mind was the worst,' her stepfather, Carlos Ramirex, told ABC 7. 'It was not one dog or two dogs, it was a lot. They bit every part of her body you could think of except for her ankles." The GoFundMe page for the teen, who ABC 7 reported has since been released from the hospital, said she was preparing for her senior year of high school. Man rescued by helicopter after 2 days trapped behind California waterfall
California police used a helicopter to rescue a man who got trapped for two days behind a waterfall when the force of the water pushed him off his climbing lines, law enforcement officials said. Ryan Wardwell, 46, of Long Beach, California, had planned to rappel down waterfalls known as the Seven Teacups on Sunday in a remote area about two hours south of Sequoia National Park, the Tulare County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He never returned to his car that night, prompting a search that led law enforcement to use infrared technology and aircraft to try to find Wardwell. The rough terrain and late hour forced officials to suspend the search until the next day. It was early Tuesday when a dive and rescue team used a drone to pinpoint Wardwell, who was alive and responsive behind a large waterfall, police said. He came off his rappelling lines when "the extreme hydraulics of the river" trapped him behind the cascade, police said. The Tulare County Sheriff's Office posted video of Wardwell's rescue on Facebook. Messages seeking comment were left Friday with Wardwell and the sheriff's office. The California Highway Patrol used a helicopter to hoist Wardwell to safety. He was treated for minor injuries and dehydration and reunited with family.

Shooting at Suisun City private property leaves 1 dead
Officers are investigating after a person was found fatally shot at a private property in Suisun City on Friday night. Suisun City police say, around 8 p.m., officers responded to an undeveloped property near Weber Street to investigate reports of a shooting. At the scene, officers found a person who had been shot. The person was taken to the hospital by first responders, but police say the person later died. Suisun City detectives are now investigating what led up to the shooting. The name of the person who died has not been released by authorities at this time.
