A mother and her 3-year-old son drowned after she tried to save him in a residential pool in Montreal on Tuesday, June 10 Neighbors said they had seen the pair at a local parade hours before 'It's truly traumatic," one person saidA neighborhood in Montreal is reeling after a mother and her 3-year-old son drowned in a residential pool after she attempted to save him, according to officials. On Tuesday, June 10, at approximately 9:35 p.m. local time, police received a 911 call for the possible drowning of two people in a pool located near 20th Avenue and Provost Street in the borough of Lachine, a spokesperson for the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal tells PEOPLE. 'They located two people, two inanimate persons, so we're talking about a woman and a child,' according to the spokesperson. CPR was performed on both people, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were later confirmed to be a 34-year-old woman and her young son. Investigators 'were able to determine that it's not a criminal event,' she says. 'It was accidental.' The case has been transferred to the Office of the Chief Coroner. They did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Lachine Mayor Maja Vodanovic gave further details about the tragic event in a statement on Facebook. 'We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family members,' the mayor wrote in the translated statement. 'It was a balloon that fell into the [in-ground] pool that triggered a series of actions that led to the drowning of the 3-year-old boy and his 34-year-old mother who tried to save him but unfortunately couldn't swim.' 'The worst nightmare ever,' she added. 'It's hard to know what to say or do in difficult times like this. We will be there to help, psychologically assist the family in need.' Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal declined to comment on the mayor's statement. Neighbors are in shock after learning the news. Locals told CTV News that just hours before the drowning, they saw the mother and toddler at a parade. 'To hear something happen to a nice, happy family, it's pretty saddening,' one person told the outlet. 'You don't expect that to happen down the street from you either.' The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a 57-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife — later identified by authorities as Peter and Sonia Nguyen — drowned near a resort in Destin, Fla., last month. They were both residents of Buford, Ga. 'Beach safety personnel pulled the mother out of the water while Destin Beach Safety and an OCSO Marine Unit located the father," authorities said in a statement. "Intense and extensive lifesaving measures were performed on both but were unsuccessful." 'Witnesses say the couple and their son were spotted struggling in the Gulf about 75 to 100 yards offshore,' officials continued. 'A bystander borrowed a boogie board and went out to try to rescue them. He was able to get the 26-year-old son to shore, and his actions saved the young man's life.' According to the sheriff's office, yellow flags were flying on the beach at the time of the incident, indicating moderate surf or currents.
