Decision On Zayn Rayyan Neglect Case To Be Known Tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- The decision on whether Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin's parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, will be called to defend themselves or acquitted by the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on charges of neglecting the six-year-old autistic child to the point of causing physical harm to him, will be known tomorrow.
Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh is scheduled to give the decision at the end of the prosecution case at 9 am.
If the court decides that the prosecution has succeeded in proving a prima facie case against Ismanira and Zaim Ikhwan, then they will be called to defend themselves, while if not, the two accused will be released and acquitted of the charges.
On April 24, the prosecution closed the case after calling 28 prosecution witnesses throughout the 20-day trial which began on February 4.
Among the prosecution witnesses called to testify were the first person to find Zayn Rayyan's body, Faizul Najib Abd Munaim, Auni Afiqah Abas who was Zayn Rayyan's caregiver, forensic medical consultant Dr Rohayu Shahar Adnan, three investigating officers and two 10-year-old child witnesses.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Nur Sabrina Zubairi, while lawyers Haresh Mahadevan, Ramzani Idris and Lavanesh Haresh represented both accused.
Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira, both aged 30, were charged with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a manner likely to cause physical harm to the victim in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai up to the nearby river area between 12 noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023.
They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of RM50,000 or both, if convicted.
Zayn Rayyan, 6, was reported missing on December 5, 2023 and his body was found the next day in a stream near his house.

One of the suspects had been released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded. The remaining three are currently under a seven-day remand order until Aug 4. Pahang MACC director Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests when contacted.

TEMERLOH: Three senior police officers, including a retired officer, have been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations into allegations of pocketing bribes totalling RM110,000 to protect drug and ketum juice distribution activities across Pahang. The suspects, aged between 30 and 50, were remanded until Aug 4 following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Temerloh magistrate's court today. Magistrate Tan Chiew King granted the remand order at 10am today. According to a source, the trio were detained around 8.30pm yesterday when they arrived at the MACC Temerloh branch office to provide their statements. "MACC's investigations led to the arrest of four suspects, all of whom are believed to have conspired to solicit and accept bribes between 2022 and 2024. "One of them is believed to have received monthly bribes amounting to between RM4,000 and RM5,000 through bank transfers into his account. The money was later distributed to the other three suspects through their respective personal bank accounts," the source said. Meanwhile, Pahang MACC director Mohd Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests, saying that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting a bribe. He said the fourth suspect has been released on MACC bail after providing his statement to the agency. Under Section 16(a)(B), offernders face a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of RM10,000, or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher, if convicted.

Young doctors detained in Melaka for alleged khalwat incident
MELAKA: A young couple, both doctors in their mid-20s, were detained following an alleged khalwat (close proximity) incident at a home in Taman Semabok Perdana here, says Datuk Rahmad Mariman. The Melaka education, higher learning and religious affairs committee chairman said that the pair, both aged 26, were picked up during the 3.25pm raid on Tuesday (July 29) by enforcement officers from the state Islamic Religious Department (JAIM). "They were fully clothed at the time of the arrest and were taken to JAIM's office for further investigation before being released on bail,' he said on Tuesday (July 29). Rahmad said the case was being investigated under Section 53 of the Melaka Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1991, which carries a fine of up to RM3,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction. Earlier, mosque officials, police and residents were present at the housing estate to confront the couple and had to wait nearly 20 minutes as the couple initially refused to answer the door. They eventually opened the front door once JAIM enforcement officers arrived at the scene. It was learnt that the male doctor claimed to the officers that he was living at a rented home shared with two housemates who were not present during the raid. The pair were attached to a public hospital here.
