Holiday hotspot turns to 'ghost town' as tourists declare it's 'dead'
With the summer months in full swing, many of us have booked getaways for guaranteed sunshine and a break from our day-to-day routine. One place that always welcomes a huge influx of tourists is Benidorm, popular with families and stag and hen dos alike.
The Spanish resort is a hit with Brits thanks to its wallet-friendly accommodation, affordable food and drink, an abundance of activities - including a legendary nightlife scene. Typically, it gets busiest during June through to August. However, one Brit who relocated to the resort town has been left gobsmacked to see just how quiet it is in July this year.
24-year-old Harry Poulton, who moved to Benidorm after his first lads' holiday at 18, has described the current scenes on the Costa Del Sol as "like a ghost town". On TikTok, Harry said: "Benidorm is a ghost town...in July?! I've never seen it this quiet. Where is everyone?!"
In the clip, he showed himself stood by the main strip and commented: "It's the middle of July, look behind me, it's dead. I'm on the Benidorm strip, there's barely any people, this is crazy."
"I cannot believe it, this is the quietest I've ever seen Benidorm," he added.
One person who is holidaying in Benidorm wrote in the comments: "Currently in Benners. Our first trip here and I was expecting carnage. It's fully [sic] of families." "In Benny now, it's packed with families instead of stags and hens," commented one other.
Another agreed and said: "We went July one year [and it] was all Spanish families around the pool." Another noted: "No one has any money. Also the price they charge to go in summer are scandalous."
One other pointed out: "It's like this every July, August. Shocking but reality, it's too warm and very expensive." One other shared: "The price has gone up, we came two years ago it was coming up as one of the cheapest places to visit, now it's definitely not. However, once you have been you know it's worth every penny."
One other wrote: "I was there between 8th and 15th and it was a lot quieter than it was two summers ago. Price of holidays are going through the roof."
Thomas Cook, a former airline which now operated as an online-only travel agent, says August is the best time to visit Benidorm. The company said: "If you love hot and sunny weather, the best time of year to visit Benidorm would be during August, which is the hottest month in the resort.
"The average temperature throughout August is a lovely 25C and has been known to reach around the 30C mark. If you enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea, August is the best month for that too, with the average sea temperature also being a comfortable 25C."

Social media is raving about a "charming" little tearoom in Powys which boasts "the best waterfall view in Wales". It also offers a "homely and easygoing" atmosphere for customers. The Tan-y-Pistyll Tearoom website adds: "Whether drinking hot chocolate around the log fire in winter or eating ice-creams and drinks outside in summer, one thing that is always commented on about Pistyll Rhaeadr is the friendliness found here." There is seating indoors and outdoors, with a pagoda overlooking Pistyll Rhaeadr. Despite only boasting a 2.7 (out of 5) rating on Tripadvisor from 41 reviews, Tan-y-Pistyll Tearoom has still received high praise from other customers online. One visitor said: "After reading poor reviews of Tan-y-Pistyll Café, we were very pleasantly surprised to be given a warm welcome into what is a very charming cafe area. "The toasted sandwich I chose was one of the best served with a fresh and varied side salad. "Reports of the cafe only accepting cash were untrue, although on the odd occasion when the Wi-Fi signal is poor do they have to resort to cash only. "I would definitely recommend a visit." Another added: "Stopped for coffee and a cake after visiting the beautiful falls - both were excellent, decor delightful." The Tan-y-Pistyll Tearoom has also been described by visitors as "cute" and a "lovely cafe full of character".

Certain countries also impose more stringent dress codes for visitors, including tourists. Fortunately, there's a simple method for Brits to guarantee they're thoroughly prepared for their break beforehand. Posting on X, the FCDO stated: "Heading overseas? Before you pack your passport, check the latest Travel Advice for your destination. "You'll find all the key info from entry requirements to laws and cultural differences", reports the Daily Record. Checking foreign travel advice The Foreign Office website provides up-to-date advice for British travellers for 226 countries and territories, including popular British holiday destinations like Spain, Italy, Egypt, Greece, and France. To utilise the website, simply locate the hyperlink for your destination country or type it into the search bar. The website will then provide you with any updated warnings and whether they remain current. For instance, the Foreign Office for Greece issued an update on 4 July about wildfires spreading through parts of the country. Despite the entry being updated at the start of the month, it underscores that the advice remains relevant due to the high risk of wildfires in the region throughout the entire summer season, spreading from April to October. The Foreign Office can also assist you in preparing for any emergencies by providing information on who to contact. For example, if you require emergency services in Spain, it is advised to dial 112 for police, fire services, or an ambulance. It also advises that if you need to report a crime, you can do so at the nearest station of the National Police, regional police, or Civil Guard. Important advice for those with travel insurance It is particularly crucial to stay updated on Foreign Office guidance if you have taken out travel insurance for the duration of your holiday. If the Foreign Office has warned against travelling to a certain region, you could be at risk of invalidating your travel insurance. If your insurance does become invalid, you could be responsible for footing the bill for any medical emergencies yourself. This could lead to excessively high costs depending on where you're travelling. For example, a fall resulting in a fractured leg in Spain could result in a bill of £2,500. "European countries are hotter than ever as destinations for American travelers, but popularity doesn't always equal praise," said Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points, in a statement. "We wanted to see if Europeans still see the stereotypical loud, overly patriotic American tourist, or if that's just part of a common misconception." These days, the majority Americans fear their nationality comes with a stigma when abroad, with over half of the American respondents saying they "worry at least a little" about being seen negatively on their international travels. Nearly three quarters believe Americans have a bad reputation overseas, and 80% blame recent politics, such as the tariffs, skewing what Europeans think of the U.S. In actuality, Americans may not need to worry so much. In the survey, one in four Europeans said they have a negative opinion of American tourists and 36% said they think American tourists behave worse than others. However, depending on what country you're visiting, you may feel a bit unwelcome, the survey also found. Here's what Europeans think of American tourists, according to Upgraded Points' survey.
