Spurs brought down to earth after Europa glory as Brighton secure big win

Rhyl Journal25-05-2025

Dominic Solanke put Spurs ahead after 17 minutes to continue the feel-good factor after Wednesday's 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao ended a 17-year wait for silverware.
With uncertainty over the future of Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, the Australian would have been eager to end a horrid domestic campaign with one final victory, but Jack Hinshelwood struck twice in quick succession after the break for the visitors.
It was followed by a late third by Matt O'Riley's penalty before Diego Gomez struck a superb fourth in stoppage time to help Brighton finish eighth, but that was not enough to secure European football.
Defeat for Spurs meant they recorded a lowest ever Premier League finish of 17th, but the full-time whistle was blown with home supporters waving flags and singing for the team following their European triumph.
Tottenham were back in action after their historic victory at San Mames and, despite three days of celebrations, Postecoglou started eight players from Wednesday.
This included midweek hero Brennan Johnson, who had been the last to leave the stage during a euphoric open-top bus parade on Friday night.
A sea of blue and white flags greeted Spurs onto the pitch before a predictably sluggish start followed, with Simon Adingra dragging an early shot wide for Brighton and Mats Wieffer then sent an effort over.
It took only four minutes for Postecoglou to be serenaded by the home fans and, with quarter of an hour played, Spurs were awarded a spot-kick.
Mathys Tel was caught in the penalty area by Wieffer and Solanke stepped up to lift the ball into the roof of the net to make it 1-0 after 17 minutes.
Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, captain in the absence of Son Heung-min, kept out a Hinshelwood header at the near post in the 30th minute before the hosts should have added a second goal.
A lightning counter-attack allowed Pedro Porro to play in Tel, but his low left-footed shot was saved by Bart Verbruggen seven minutes before half-time.

Changes were made by both head coaches at the break, with Kaoru Mitoma introduced for the Seagulls and it immediately paid off.
Mitoma forced a corner and Brajan Gruda's delivery ricocheted to Hinshelwood, who steered past Vicario from close range in the 51st minute.
It sparked a frantic period, with Brighton substitute Gomez denied by Vicario before at the other end Tel raced past Wieffer to set up Johnson, but he side-footed wide.
The visitors continued to press and, after Vicario tipped over a fierce Yankuba Minteh strike, Carlos Baleba had a low effort deflected onto the post from another corner.

Postecoglou sensed Spurs' dip in energy but, before a triple substitution could be made, Hinshelwood made it 2-1 after 64 minutes.
Tottenham failed to deal with another Gruda corner and Hinshelwood pounced quickly to back-heel past Vicario.
Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison were sent on with 25 minutes left, but the Seagulls made sure of the points when O'Riley fired past Vicario from the penalty spot after Bissouma brought down Gomez.
Gomez concluded the scoring with a sumptuous 25-yard strike in stoppage time, but the Tottenham fans rallied around the squad with flags being waved to celebrate a first European title in 41 years.

5 options for Liverpool's next transfer after Wirtz including Arsenal hijack

Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz but it appears that Arne Slot is not quite finished in the transfer window quite yet with a number of sensational deals still on the table Liverpool have already enjoyed a sensational summer transfer window. They have sealed deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi and Florian Wirtz is set to follow that duo in a potential British record deal. And while that is set to take the Reds' summer spending so far to around £150m, it looks like Arne Slot is not totally satisfied. A striker is still on Liverpool 's shopping list, with Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa all potentially set to leave Anfield over the coming weeks. ‌ The Merseysiders haven't spent heavily on forwards over recent years - with just Nunez, Jota and Dominic Solanke all being signed since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp. But Slot could change that trend ahead of Liverpool's title defence. ‌ A number of big-name forwards have already been linked with moves to Anfield. So take a look and find out who could be leading the line for the Premier League champions next season: Benjamin Sesko Already linked with a move to the Premier League, Arsenal have the RB Leipzig star firmly in their crosshairs. And it's no surprise given his eye-catching goalscoring exploits in Germany over recent years. Sesko, 22, has scored 39 goals for Leipzig over his last two campaigns. And while Arsenal appeared to be the front-runners for his services, Liverpool could represent fresh competition. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds have been keeping tabs on his development over in Germany. And as it stands, he would be more affordable than some other options, while Liverpool could benefit from a positive relationship with Leipzig to get a deal over the line. Alexander Isak On the topic of big-name forwards, Alexander Isak would be a stunning addition to Liverpool's squad. Apart from Erling Haaland, the Swede has arguably proved himself as the best forward in the Premier League with Newcastle. However, a deal would likely be tricky to do. With the Magpies having secured a Champions League place for next season, he might not be in a rush to leave. ‌ And they would also be demanding a huge fee for the former Real Sociedad man and given their upcoming outlay on Wirtz, it might be too much for the Reds despite him being dubbed a 'dream' signing. Which striker should Liverpool sign? Share your thoughts in the comments below ‌ Hugo Ekitike Another Bundesliga-based forward linked with a switch to the Premier League, Ekitike has a number of clubs interested in his services. Manchester United and Chelsea are both eyeing the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, as well as Slot's side. But the Frenchman won't be cheap either. Reports have suggested that Frankfurt are demanding around £85m for his signature this summer. Having scored 22 goals for the club last season, he might be a player worth gambling on. Victor Osimhen Following a stunning loan spell with Galatasaray, Osimhen 's future is back up in the air. The Turkish giants appear unlikely to extend their agreement with Napoli, while the Nigerian has burnt his bridges in Naples so a return there appears to be a pipe dream. ‌ Man United have been linked, while Liverpool's name has been mentioned on a few occasions in the past. Funnily enough, Osimhen could actually be one of the more affordable options that Slot could consider this campaign. It has been reported that he could be set to leave Napoli for around £63m, which could represent excellent value. But Liverpool will have to move quickly given United have reportedly resumed talks to sign him. ‌ Ademola Lookman Okay, we're cheating a little bit here given he's not an out-and-out number nine but Lookman's numbers with Atalanta over the past three seasons suggest he'd certainly be able to do a job. Since signing for the Italian side, he has scored an outstanding 52 goals in 117 appearances - 20 of those strikes coming in his most recent season. It has already been suggested that Liverpool could sign him in a part-exchange deal with Federico Chiesa going the other way. Of course, fans would have to ignore Lookman's previous Everton allegiances but as soon as the goals start going in, that shouldn't prove to be a problem for too long. SPFL praises 'phenomenal' fans but warns minority of consequences of disorder at matches

A total of 5,336,353 supporters turned out to watch their teams across all SPFL competitions in season 2024/25 – the highest figure in the SPFL era and a rise of nearly 185,000 on the previous record, set last year. The jump in attendances follows a hugely dramatic end to the season across all four William Hill SPFL divisions, with the race for promotions, European places, and to avoid relegation going right down to the wire. An SPFL spokesperson said: 'We'd like to thank Scotland's dedicated fans for the incredible support they continue to provide to clubs, as well as the work of our member clubs, Police Scotland, the authorities, and those working at matches throughout the season. 'While the vast and overwhelming majority of supporters are an undoubted force for good in our game, it's been extremely disappointing to see a small number persisting with dangerous, irresponsible and selfish behaviour. Whether that's flares, fireworks, smoke bombs, throwing missiles, or pitch invasions, these actions put staff, supporters and players at risk and are completely unacceptable. 'For example, the incident which saw Aberdeen player Jack Mackenzie left injured at Tannadice Park after a chair was thrown onto the pitch, simply beggars belief. It goes without saying that players, staff and fellow supporters should have the right to attend games free from the risk of being struck by projectiles. 'The swift cooperation between clubs, supporters and Police Scotland helped identify the alleged perpetrator, who has since appeared in court. This is a model of how our system should work. In another recent incident, Livingston quickly issued a lifetime ban to an individual who allegedly spat at a member of the Ross County coaching team, and we commend the club's prompt and decisive action. 'As well as club bans, unwelcome incidents such as these have unfortunately made it abundantly clear that there is a need for far more widespread use of football banning orders (FBOs) and we are encouraged by the progress being made in partnership with our clubs, Police Scotland and the Scottish Government. 'We have been discussing broadening the scope of these orders as part of the Scottish Government's FBO working group and we're extremely pleased to see this was covered in the Programme for Government in May. These recent incidents reinforce the need for such sanctions to protect the match-day experience for the vast majority of law-abiding fans. 'During the 2024/25 season the SPFL took disciplinary action against a number of clubs and notices of complaints have now been raised against three clubs in respects of incidents which occurred at the end of the season – Partick Thistle, Aberdeen and Celtic. 'The SPFL will undertake a number of discussions with supporter groups to better understand their views and explore the challenges involved. We're committed to open and constructive engagement as we work together to ensure a safe, enjoyable and inclusive match day experience for all fans. 'We will be having further meetings with key stakeholders over the summer to review the most recent season and look ahead to 2025/26. We remain committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable match day experience for players and supporters – they are the lifeblood of our game and deserve nothing less.' Like this: Like Related
