BYD to double South Korea sales network in challenge to Hyundai and Kia

BYD plans to increase its sales network in South Korea, a car market dominated by local producers Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp, as it pushes for more deliveries outside its home stronghold of China.

'We will increase our sales network to 30 by the end of this year from 15 to meet demand from Korean consumers,' Liu Xueliang, the general manager of BYD's Asia-Pacific auto sales division, said at the Seoul Mobility Show in Ilsan city on Thursday.
BYD has not been in the South Korean market for very long. It only debuted its passenger brand of cars in January when it officially launched its Atto 3 electric SUV. While the Chinese auto giant is known for its aggressive marketing and pricing strategies, it is up against strong competition from incumbents. Hyundai and Kia sold some 1.2 million cars in South Korea last year for a 75 per cent market share.
BYD introduced its Seal mid-sized sedan at the auto show, with a price starting from 47.5 million won (US$32,400), excluding subsidies. BYD's booth at the Seoul Mobility Show was one of the largest. It also showcased a range of its other models, displaying a total of six vehicles.
The Shenzhen-based carmaker has enjoyed a robust start to 2025, with sales up 58 per cent in the first quarter versus the same period of last year.

Over the course of the past month, BYD has delivered a series of product releases that have generated a huge amount of buzz, including smart driving technology for most of its models at no extra cost and an ultra-fast charging system that can add 400km of range in just five minutes.

When China Tang originally opened in Hong Kong in 2013, it came in the wake of two other restaurants by celebrated bon vivant Sir David Tang . Despite its late arrival, China Tang has survived both Island Tang and Kowloon Tang, proving to be the most enduring of its late founder's concepts here (if one excludes the members-only China Club). The restaurant even survived the HK$3.1 billion makeover at The Landmark that has claimed both MO Bar and Please Don't Tell. Having closed for a brief renovation of its own during this period of transformation at The Landmark, China Tang is once again welcoming guests. The revamped restaurant features new mirrored signage, refurbished carpeting, and an enlarged private dining room that has taken over the former bar area. A facelift has been applied to the vintage vibes across the restaurant's interior design, while maintaining the ornate Asian touches beloved by regular guests. Photo: Jocelyn Tam One thing that hasn't changed is the man in charge of the kitchens – executive chef Menex Cheung , now in his seventh year at the establishment. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Cheung spent two decades perfecting his craft, including tenures in Beijing, Shanghai and Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. His travels across China and Mongolia allowed Cheung opportunities to polish the flavour profiles that differentiate each region – the numbing and spicy notes of Sichuan cooking, the delicate and refreshing aspects of Cantonese cuisine, the hearty, punchy flavours popular in Beijing and Shandong. 'When you travel, you get to understand the region and its inhabitants – their culture, their food and eating habits,' Cheung explains. 'You learn a lot about a culture through its food. Locally, I often get inspired in unfamiliar places outside of the restaurants. Touring [Hong Kong] and its edible landscape, I get to visit smaller independent vendors, or speak with the fishmongers and butchers. It's not only food that inspires me – everything from floral arrangements to art and crockery can benefit my reasoning and creativity.' If the interior decorations have only received slight adjustments, the same cannot be said for the menu at China Tang, which is overflowing with new dishes. Cheung estimates that two thirds of the menu is new, and is unafraid of any criticism that might come his way for the tweaks he has made to popular recipes. Rather than indulging in change for the sake of change, however, Cheung says he has only introduced 'changes that are meaningful to the outcome of the dish'.

Chinese firms tend to invest more efficiently when facing higher duties or import restrictions, according to a study that highlights an unexpected benefit of tariffs by analysing data from before the two trade wars with the United States. Published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Corporate Finance, the paper examined more than 2,700 listed firms in China, their financial and accounting data from 2003 to 2016, and the trade barriers imposed on the country during this period. The paper was released in April when Chinese exporters faced renewed trade turbulence, with the world's two largest economies imposing triple-digit tariffs on each other – before agreeing to a 90-day truce in May. The European Union has also levied anti-subsidy duties on Chinese electric vehicles. Trade defence instruments (TDIs), such as anti-dumping or countervailing duties, have largely prompted Chinese companies to allocate capital more effectively, according to the paper. This was especially true for cash-rich firms that lacked strong governance, where unchecked investments had been more common. 'Our findings reveal a nuanced dynamic, showing that trade protection measures, such as TDIs, can have complex and counterintuitive effects on target firms' resource allocation and the broader economy.' The authors called trade shocks an 'external disciplining mechanism' that reduces free cash flow and curbs overinvestment, where excessive resources are poured into underperforming projects.

China's advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and humanoid technology will continue to capture the imaginations of investors as the world turns its focus to the region, according to Morgan Stanley 's director of pan-Asia research. Advertisement 'The DeepSeek announcement has shifted the fundamental discussion about China to technological innovation,' said Magdalena Stoklosa in an interview last month. 'This theme is multi-year and incredibly important.' Her team identified technological diffusion and the spread of AI across economies as key long-term research themes. AI start-up DeepSeek's breakthroughs earlier this year in large-language models sparked a rally in Chinese stocks. In February, the US investment bank upgraded Chinese stocks to equal weight from underweight, due to improving valuations and a significant shift towards new-economy companies. 'We still see that China is underweight from a perspective of global emerging markets positioning and it should effectively be at least close,' Stoklosa said. Advertisement Over the next 12 to 18 months, she said it was important to keep an eye on how various AI models work, spread through the economy and become monetised. 'In China, the discussion is layered with government support for AI infrastructure, a thriving innovation scene with start-ups, mega industry players, and a strategic push to build open-source models that make access to AI quicker and more affordable for many corporations,' she added.
