Partying Leeds United set up last-day Championship title shootout and close in on 100 points after 4-0 thrashing of Bristol City

Daily Mail28-04-2025

This was a performance of champions. Leeds United aren't quite there yet but they will travel to Plymouth on Saturday in charge of their own destiny and with the chance to finish the campaign on 100 points for the first time in their history.
Daniel Farke 's side outclassed a Bristol City side in play-off contention on Monday night and lived up to their promise that winning the Championship, rather than just promotion, is the aim.
'We're proud. And the performance made it even more special,' said Leeds skipper, Ethan Ampadu. 'That was for the squad and the fans.'
With their 28th league win of the season, Leeds went back ahead of Burnley on goal difference thanks to goals from Ao Tanaka, Wilfried Gnonto and a late brace from substitute Largie Ramazani.
For Liam Manning's side, this was a schooling. They failed to have a shot on target until the 93rd minute.
The Robins will need to secure their play-off spot when relegation-battling Preston travel to Ashton Gate this weekend.
For Leeds, it was party central in the spring sunshine long before kick off with the stadium DJ playing Gold by Spandau Ballet and The Only Way Is Up by Yazz pre-match.
At The Old Peacock, opposite Elland Road, Patrick Bamford put £5,000 behind the bar for punters and inside, yellow scarves were placed on every seat.
On a day where proposed images of a redeveloped Elland Road were released, the raucous rendition of 'Marching on Together' was an ample reminder that any modernisation must not come at the expense of the atmosphere this old school ground can provide.
This was Leeds at their very best. Even Erling Haaland took to Snapchat to share that he was watching the Whites.
Paraag Marathe, the Leeds chairman, had flown in from San Francisco to spend the week here, with the club insisting that this was for the celebrations rather than fuelling any speculation surrounding the future of Farke.
What he witnessed on the pitch and in the stands was nothing but appreciation for the Leeds manager.
On the pitch, he named an unchanged eleven from the team who demolished Stoke and any idea that Leeds may have taken their foot off was dispelled as they raced out of the blocks.
Manor Solomon's lofted delivery found Tanaka, who finished brilliantly on the half volley to give Leeds the lead. Farke's men were relentless, as they have been for most of the season, and Gnonto doubled the lead after he was played through by Joel Piroe before Ramazani came off the bench and scored with his first touch from Junior Firpo's cross. The Belgian added another in injury time.
As the players came back out to celebrate promotion with the fans, the loudest roar was saved for Farke.
'I don't need public backing (from the chairman). This is one of the most important days in our history. I wanted to bring this club back to the Premier League. The next step is to establish us there.' Farke told Sky Sports.
The next time this place holds a competitive fixture, it will be in the Premier League.
That much is for sure but still it remains unclear whether the man who took them back to The Promised Land will be leading them come August.
Either way, he deserves immense credit for giving these fans a season that they will never forget.

Ex-Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst's career as a manager will be OVER if he takes job at Liverpool, says pundit

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) GIOVANNI VAN BRONCKHORST is closing in on a surprise return to the dugout in the Premier league - but not as manager. The ex- Rangers boss and player has been working in the media as a pundit on various outlets since he was sacked by Besiktas in November. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Van Bronckhorst is set to return to coaching Credit: Getty 2 Arne Slot wants to link up with him at Liverpool Credit: Reuters But the Dutchman is poised to make his coaching comeback this summer as he's set to become Arne Slot's assistant manager at Liverpool. Van Bronckhorst, 50, is expected to take over from John Heitanga in the role after he left to become the new manager of Ajax. Slot is preparing to reshuffle his coaching staff ahead of their Premier League title defence next season and Van Bronckhorst is understood to be his number one pick for the job. Van Bronckhorst has managed Feyenood, Guangzhou R&F, Rangers and most recently Besiktas in his career as a gaffer to date. But former Dutch footballer Hans Kraay Jr believes Van Bronckhorst will NEVER manager another club if he agrees to join Slot at Anfield. The former NAC Breda and Brighton & Hove Albion defender, now 65, reckons his fellow countryman won't ever want to return to the hectic schedule of a gaffer once he experiences the less stressful role of a coach. Discussing the 50-year-old's career in the dugout to date in his latest column for Voetbal International, he wrote: "At Feyenoord, apart from his first period, when he needed Dick Advocaat to keep himself in the saddle, he revealed that he quite enjoyed being a head coach. "In any case, if you are at a club that often wins, it is a much more enjoyable job than being a coach at RKC or Almere. "But in Feyenoord's championship year, with all the stress that comes with being a coach, he was quite relaxed, open and jovial towards us. "The championship helped a lot, of course. After that, Van Bronckhorst spread his wings and left for Rangers. After a good start, it became quite stressful there. Arne Slot shows his class as he leads Anfield in chant about Jurgen Klopp after sealing 20th title for Liverpool "It was the same story at Beşiktaş. He won the Super Cup before the season, but was then hounded by the critical Turkish press. "I think this assistantship to Arne Slot means the end of his career as head coach, and also of the life in which you spend 168 hours a week on football." Kraay then provided an insight into role he believes Van Bronckhorst will have under Slot. He added: "Gio is absolutely not a field coach, he always left that to Jean-Paul van Gastel at Feyenoord. And Arne Slot has the best field coach in the western hemisphere at his side - Sipke Hulshoff." Hulsoff worked with Slot at Feyenoord and joined the manager at Anfield last year. Man Utd fan group slams 'kick in the teeth' after Sir Jim Ratcliffe decision

Manchester United supporters have been left furious by ticket price hikes at Old Trafford despite the club's dismal season after the team finished 15th in the Premier League - with Sir Jim Ratcliffe finding himself under huge pressure Manchester United fans have slammed the club for a "fresh kick in the teeth" after new 2025-26 ticket prices were revealed - with some costing as much as £97 on general admission. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has come under fire from supporters for his decision-making at Old Trafford following a series of cost-cutting measures that has seen him slash concessions and raise prices, on top of scrapping free lunches for staff. He has also axed Sir Alex Ferguson from his ambassadorial role amid the club's perilous financial position. ‌ It has come during a disastrous season for United after sacking Erik ten Hag and replacing him with Ruben Amorim - though the Portuguese coach failed to arrest the team's slump and ended up finishing 15th. ‌ United also lost the Europa League final against Tottenham and will be without European football entirely in the 2025-26 campaign, another major blow to their financial position. Now the Manchester United Supporters Trust have spoken out to condemn United chiefs for their ticket hikes, which they say are "against the interest of fans". "This really is a fresh kick in the teeth for Manchester United fans," the statement read. "When the Club said they were introducing this new model for Members tickets, we urged them to keep the majority of matches at current levels and only apply the highest price category for a small number of the biggest games, and reduced prices for lower demand games. "Once again, they have failed to consult any of the fans representative bodies on the details of the decision, and once again they're making choices against the interests of fans and, we believe, the Club as a whole." Category A tickets, against Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle, will cost between £59 and £97, while Category B - the most common ticket featured across 11 Premier League fixtures - will set fans back between £57 and £86. ‌ Category C, meanwhile, is set to cost roughly £37-£60 - but that will only be present for two games, against Sunderland and Wolves. Category D is the cheapest ticket bracket at a range of £32-£52 and will only be used for cup games. United are still set to be active in the transfer window despite their limited transfer funds, having already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, and are also hoping to sign £70m-rated Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. However, the club are hoping to offload expensive stars such as Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho from their wage bill to continue saving as much money as possible and reinvest it into their team. Earlier this year, Ratcliffe revealed United would have gone bust by Christmas without their new cost-cutting regime. ‌ "Manchester United would have run out of cash by the end of 2025," he said in an interview with Gary Neville. "Where do you want to spend the money? Do you want to spend it on operating the club or do you want to spend it on the squad? Because if you spend it on the squad, you get better results. "The losses are because the club's just been spending money needlessly. We've got a body language consultant. There's all sorts of stuff we're spending money on that we don't need to be."

Pep Guardiola gives Rayan Cherki verdict after 'embarrassing' Man City debut

Pep Guardiola gave Rayan Cherki the benefit of the doubt after his tame Manchester City debut in the Club World Cup. Cherki completed his move to the Etihad earlier this month for a reported fee of £34million after a thrilling campaign in France with Lyon. He played for the first time in City blue on Wednesday evening against Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca in the revamped tournament taking place across the US this month. Phil Foden opened the scoring in the opening minutes with Cherki starting the game in Philadelphia. 'The opening half largely passed the Frenchman by, however, struggling to impose himself while occupying the no8 position ahead of fellow summer signing Tijjani Reijnders. Tasked with feeding Savinho, Jeremie Doku and Omar Marmoush in the City attack, Cherki struggled to find space to work his magic, pressed into errors by the opposition. The France international managed just 22 touches of the ball during his time on the pitch, losing it 10 times – more than any other City player – before he was replaced by Erling Haaland on the hour mark. Cherki announced himself in style this week by vowing to 'kill' Manchester United when City and their neighbours collide in the new Premier League season – with his meek debut mocked by rival supporters on social media. 'Cherki you should be embarrassed with this performance,' one fan wrote with another who was left unimpressed commenting: 'Cherki stinker and wrecked after 60 minutes on his debut.' One more sympathetic observer noted: 'Cherki just overdoing it tbh which is v common for a debut. It'll come.' Cherki, and fellow new arrival Reijnders, will both be tasked with filling the void left by Kevin de Bruyne who has signed for Napoli after a decade in Manchester.' Speaking after the match, Guardiola admitted de Bruyne will be 'difficult to replace' but pointed out Cherki's qualities despite failing to catch the eye 'in very tough conditions' on his debut. 'Of course, Kevin is difficult to replace, we know that,' Guardiola said in his post-match press conference. More Trending 'For the quality that he has, there is no doubt about that. But at the same time, the club decided on Rayan, he has incredible skills close to the box, an incredible vision and pass, he has many, many things. '[Today] was just the first game in very tough conditions but I am really pleased that he is here.' Guardiola added in an interview with DAZN: 'Tijjani [Reijnders] played very well, Rayan [Cherki] had good moments. Everyone has to get to know us and see what happens.'
