Partying Leeds United set up last-day Championship title shootout and close in on 100 points after 4-0 thrashing of Bristol City

Daily Mail28-04-2025
This was a performance of champions. Leeds United aren't quite there yet but they will travel to Plymouth on Saturday in charge of their own destiny and with the chance to finish the campaign on 100 points for the first time in their history.
Daniel Farke 's side outclassed a Bristol City side in play-off contention on Monday night and lived up to their promise that winning the Championship, rather than just promotion, is the aim.
'We're proud. And the performance made it even more special,' said Leeds skipper, Ethan Ampadu. 'That was for the squad and the fans.'
With their 28th league win of the season, Leeds went back ahead of Burnley on goal difference thanks to goals from Ao Tanaka, Wilfried Gnonto and a late brace from substitute Largie Ramazani.
For Liam Manning's side, this was a schooling. They failed to have a shot on target until the 93rd minute.
The Robins will need to secure their play-off spot when relegation-battling Preston travel to Ashton Gate this weekend.
For Leeds, it was party central in the spring sunshine long before kick off with the stadium DJ playing Gold by Spandau Ballet and The Only Way Is Up by Yazz pre-match.
At The Old Peacock, opposite Elland Road, Patrick Bamford put £5,000 behind the bar for punters and inside, yellow scarves were placed on every seat.
On a day where proposed images of a redeveloped Elland Road were released, the raucous rendition of 'Marching on Together' was an ample reminder that any modernisation must not come at the expense of the atmosphere this old school ground can provide.
This was Leeds at their very best. Even Erling Haaland took to Snapchat to share that he was watching the Whites.
Paraag Marathe, the Leeds chairman, had flown in from San Francisco to spend the week here, with the club insisting that this was for the celebrations rather than fuelling any speculation surrounding the future of Farke.
What he witnessed on the pitch and in the stands was nothing but appreciation for the Leeds manager.
On the pitch, he named an unchanged eleven from the team who demolished Stoke and any idea that Leeds may have taken their foot off was dispelled as they raced out of the blocks.
Manor Solomon's lofted delivery found Tanaka, who finished brilliantly on the half volley to give Leeds the lead. Farke's men were relentless, as they have been for most of the season, and Gnonto doubled the lead after he was played through by Joel Piroe before Ramazani came off the bench and scored with his first touch from Junior Firpo's cross. The Belgian added another in injury time.
As the players came back out to celebrate promotion with the fans, the loudest roar was saved for Farke.
'I don't need public backing (from the chairman). This is one of the most important days in our history. I wanted to bring this club back to the Premier League. The next step is to establish us there.' Farke told Sky Sports.
The next time this place holds a competitive fixture, it will be in the Premier League.
That much is for sure but still it remains unclear whether the man who took them back to The Promised Land will be leading them come August.
Either way, he deserves immense credit for giving these fans a season that they will never forget.

Martin Odegaard responds to Arsenal legend who told Mikel Arteta he shouldn't be captain

Arsenal legend Tony Adams made headlines this week by telling Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to strip Martin Odegaard of the captaincy and give the armband to Declan Rice Martin Odegaard has staunchly defended his role as Arsenal captain after stinging criticism from Tony Adams. Club legend Adams took aim at Odegaard, 26, by claiming that the Gunners won't win the Premier League title so long as he's captain. ‌ The former Arsenal skipper urged Mikel Arteta to give the armband to team-mate Declan Rice, suggesting that the change would allow Odegaard to play with more freedom. But Adams won't get his way after the squad overwhelming voted for the Norwegian to remain as captain for the 2025-26 season. ‌ Now Odegaard has responded to Adams in an interview ahead of Sunday's curtain-raiser away to Manchester United. Asked about his style of leadership, the midfielder explained to Sky Sports: "It's a lot to be fair. It's a lot of small things. It's hard to describe it, it's more like a constant role you do. ‌ "There's always these small things you have to do. In general it's just how I see it is to get the best out of the team and how to give the team the right mindset. Help the players around you, get the best mindset in everyone. "I think before the game just on the pitch I do a little one (team talk) and inside the dressing room we have different people talking. It's not just me there's a lot of people sharing the responsibility and the manager does a lot as well. It's a shared thing. It's not just me all the time." Adams admitted during an event for Irish Independent that Odegaard wasn't his 'kind' of captain. "The call is to make Declan Rice the captain," the ex-Gunners defender began in a plea to Arteta. "I think Declan is my kind of captain, and it might free Odegaard up to play with a bit more freedom. Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club that you think can actually take you to the next level. "He (Arteta) has got an opportunity this year to actually turn into a winner. To win league titles, you have to be a [Jurgen] Klopp, you have to be a [Sir Alex] Ferguson. You have to lead by example, you have to be a winner, you have to go about your business. And that reflects in your captain. ‌ "And I'm seeing Declan Rice as a captain but I'm saying to Arteta: Come on, step up now. It's your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you're not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain." Arteta, though, believes that there's 'no question' that Odegaard should be captain. "Well my opinion is clear and it's not just my opinion, it's all the staff and especially the players." the Gunners boss explained. ‌ "I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday. And by a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, and which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win. So I think there's no question about that."

Richarlison brace helps Tottenham win season opener against Burnley

Richarlison netted a brace, including a superb scissor kick, as Thomas Frank picked up a first Premier League win in charge of Tottenham with a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Frank was without injured pair James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, but Richarlison's double helped Spurs secure a first league win since April 6. Mohammed Kudus twice set up Richarlison for his goals, firstly in the 10th minute before he supplied a cross which the latter volleyed in on the hour mark. added another six minutes later to wrap up the win for Tottenham on a tough top-flight return for Burnley boss Scott Parker at his old club. Newcastle missed the presence of Alexander Isak as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw with 10-man Aston Villa. Isak was left out by boss Eddie Howe as the Sweden international tries to force a move away from St James' Park this summer. But the Magpies could have done with their star man as they failed to find a way past Villa, who had Ezri Konsa sent off in the 66th minute. Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style after they swept West Ham aside with a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light. Following an eight-year absence from the league, the Black Cats went ahead just after the hour mark through Eliezer Mayenda before Dan Ballard's header doubled their advantage. Substitute Wilson Isidor came off the bench and put the cherry on top of a perfect afternoon to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017. Rodrigo Muniz struck deep into stoppage time as Fulham snatched a 1-1 draw from under the nose of Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Brazilian forward Muniz pounced six minutes into added time after Brighton failed to deal with Harry Wilson's corner. Albion had looked on course to make a winning start to the season when Matt O'Riley tucked home a 55th-minute penalty after Sander Berge brought down Georginio Rutter.
