Shockingly study reveals olive oil contributes to obesity

It's time for an oil change, really. A recent study has stunned people with the news that olive oil actually contributes to obesity.
For years, olive oil has been consumed as a healthy alternative to other cooking oils. According to the North American Olive Oil Association, more than
50%
of American households use olive oil due to its flavour and health benefits. According to a
study
published in the National Library of Medicine, olive oil has anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, renoprotective and anti-neurodegenerative agents.
However, a recent study published in the journal Cell Reports revealed that eating a high-fat diet containing a huge amount of oleic acid- a type of fatty acid found in olive oil, can cause more obesity than other types of dietary fats.
Oleic acid, a monosaturated fat associated with obesity, leads the body to make more fat cells. High levels of the acid boost a signalling protein, AKT2 and reduce the activity of a regulating protein LXR, to result in the faster growth of the precursor cells that form new fat cells.
"We know that the types of fat that people eat have changed during the obesity epidemic. We wanted to know whether simply overeating a diet rich in fat causes obesity, or whether the composition of these fatty acids that make up the oils in the diet is important. Do specific fat molecules trigger responses in the cells?" said Michael Rudolph, Ph.D, assistant professor of biochemistry and physiology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and member of OU Health Harold Hamm Diabetes Center to Medical Xpress.

Rudolph and his team which included other collaborators at Yale University School of Medicine and New York University School of Medicine, carried out the research by feeding mice a variety of specialized diets rich in particular individual fatty acids, including those found in coconut oil, peanut oil, milk, lard and soybean oil.
Oleic acid was the only one that led to precursor cells that gave rise to fat cells to proliferate more than other fatty acids.
"You can think of the fat cells as an army," explained Rudolph. "When you give oleic acid, it initially increases the number of 'fat cell soldiers' in the army, which creates a larger capacity to store excess dietary nutrients. Over time, if the excess nutrients overtake the number of fat cells, obesity can occur, which can then lead to cardiovascular disease or diabetes if not controlled."
He suggested consuming fats in moderation and from a variety of sources. "Relatively balanced levels of oleic acid seem to be beneficial, but higher and prolonged levels may be detrimental. If someone is at risk for heart disease, high levels of oleic acid may not be a good idea."

Each human has an idiosyncratic pattern to the constant inhale-exhale that counts their hours, days and years on Earth. A team of scientists fitted people with a wearable device that monitored their nasal breathing and an analysis of the data revealed patterns that were detailed enough for the researchers to identify individuals with an accuracy of 96.8 %. While breathing might seem like a simple process for us, it's governed by a complex and extensive brain network that is largely automatic with the exception of certain circumstances like holding breath inside water. Additionally, the team at the Weizmann Olfaction Research Group have been analysing how the brain processes scent during inhalation. You can easily see each person's uniqueness when you measure different people," Soroka told ScienceAlert. "However, there was no convenient way to measure it until now. The development of a tiny wearable device capable of recording over extended periods allowed us to measure 100 participants over 24 hours. This, in turn, enabled us to present the concept in a much more compelling way." The intriguing study Image credits: Getty Images The device developed by the researchers monitors and logs the airflow through each nostril of the wearer. The team tasked 97 participants to wear the device for 24 hours and for the first hour itself they achieved an accurate identification rate of 43%. This accuracy only increased after 24 hours. The resulting breath log was analysed using BreathMetrics, a protocol that examines 24 parameters of the person's nasal respiration. The researchers not only found that a person can be identified on the basis of their breathing pattern but also understood what those patterns indicated about a person. The participants who had anxiety issues had shorter inhales and more variability in the pauses between breaths while sleeping. Additionally, they also found that a person's breathing correlates with their BMI. According to the team led by brain scientist Timna Soroka of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, this "respiratory fingerprint" could promote new ways to understand and treat physical and mental ailments. "You would think that breathing has been measured and analyzed in every way. Yet we stumbled upon a completely new way to look at respiration. We consider this as a brain readout," said Noam Sobel, a neuroscientist at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Now, the next step will be figuring out how this research can be applied to diagnostics. "We can learn how specific breathing patterns may predict various diseases," explained Soroka. "But of course, in the future, we will examine whether we can also treat disease by modifying respiratory patterns."

Clad in a NASA jacket, standing tall against the Empire State Building, she captioned her post with pride and awe: 'I'm officially an astronaut of the Class of 2025 and will be part of the inaugural Titans Space flight.'The news went viral, triggering a surge of congratulatory messages and patriotic pride. Peixoto, 22, positioned herself as Brazil's first female astronaut, set to follow in the footsteps of Marcos Pontes, the only Brazilian to travel to space so the euphoria was after Peixoto's announcement, NASA issued a firm statement that abruptly grounded the narrative. As reported by the Daily Mail, the American space agency confirmed that Peixoto was not a NASA employee, astronaut candidate, or affiliate in any formal capacity.'While we generally do not comment on personnel, this individual is not a NASA employee, principal investigator, or astronaut candidate,' NASA stated. They clarified that Peixoto had participated in L'Space Academy, a student workshop sponsored by NASA, which is not equivalent to an internship or employment.'It would be inappropriate to claim NASA affiliation as part of this opportunity,' the agency to Peixoto, her selection came not from NASA, but from Titans Space, a private spaceflight company that plans to launch its first human mission in 2029. Her former university in Brazil confirmed she had been dismissed in 2023 for failure to team, in damage control mode, released a press statement reiterating that the post did not claim any official affiliation with NASA. 'At no time is there a mention of NASA, or that she would be an astronaut for the agency,' the statement read. 'The post was never edited.'Yet, screenshots and post metadata told a different story — the post had indeed been edited, and images prominently featured NASA branding, fueling the narrative of implied returned to Instagram to defend her statement, accusing critics of reading only the headline and not the caption, which she said clearly identified Titans Space as the selector.'I challenge those questioning my authenticity to read carefully,' she wrote. 'This is a private initiative. My dream is real.'Her case underscores a broader tension between aspiration and accountability in the influencer age.
