Leinster grind out Glasgow win and turn focus to Scarlets challenge

Irish Examiner19-05-2025
UNITED RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP Leinster 13 Glasgow Warriors 5
In the wake of his side closing out their regular season campaign with a low-key eight-point victory over Glasgow Warriors at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, Leinster head coach Leo Cullen was already casting one eye on a forthcoming United Rugby Championship quarter-final against Scarlets.
Following results elsewhere across the weekend, it was determined that Leinster – who were already guaranteed top spot in the league standings heading into their clash with Glasgow – will face the Welsh region in the last-eight of the URC at the Aviva on May 31. Spearheaded by former Wales scrum-half Dwayne Peel (who also had a stint as an assistant coach at Ulster in the past), Scarlets are one of just two teams to have defeated the eastern province in this season's URC.
While it was a radically different Leinster side to the one that suffered a surprise European Champions Cup semi-final defeat to Northampton Saints seven days later, the Llanelli-based outfit recorded a deserved 35-22 bonus point win over the Blues at Parc y Scarlets as recently as April 26.
'They kick a lot. Their half backs are good in terms of controlling the game. It's making sure we don't get frustrated by that. Making sure we gain energy from them kicking the ball away, so that's not something we would get frustrated by. They are well coached,' Cullen acknowledged after Saturday's game.
'Dwayne Peel and Jared Payne, those two in particular have a very good understanding of the provinces from their time here with Ulster. We'll look back at some of those things where Scarlets exposed us at different stages. It will be a good challenge for us.'
It took almost 27 minutes before the deadlock was broken in a largely uneventful opening half on Saturday, but moments after having a score ruled out from a crossfield kick by Sam Prendergast - due to the fly-half not taking a penalty from the correct spot – Jimmy O'Brien was eventually released by his fellow Kildare native for a try in the left-corner.
Prendergast subsequently converted from the touchline as Leinster were forced to be content with a 7-0 interval lead. The Blues had received a set-back when Robbie Henshaw was replaced by Jamie Osborne with just under 22 minutes on the clock and Cullen revealed afterwards that he had picked up a bang on his knee.
Tadhg Furlong also remained on the bench for the duration of the game as he was nursing a niggle, but it is hoped both players will be available for the URC run-in.
Even though Prendergast extended the Leinster buffer with a 56th minute penalty, Glasgow were firmly in contention when George Horne crossed for a try moments after being introduced as a replacement.
This seemingly left the tie delicately poised moving into the final-quarter, but a late Ciaran Frawley penalty ultimately ensured the hosts claimed their 16th triumph of the current league campaign.
In stark contrast to their 52-0 demolition of the same opposition at the quarter-final stage of the European Champions Cup in the Aviva a little over a month ago, Leinster found it difficult to break down a stubborn Glasgow challenge on this occasion. While he will have been frustrated by elements of Saturday's performance, Cullen is hopeful his charges will benefit from this tight affair as they aim to get their hands on the URC trophy in the coming weeks.
'Sometimes it's better to have some of these tight games, isn't it? Some of these blow out games, I'm not sure what we have learned from a few of them. Listen, it was good that we had to figure things out today,' Cullen added.

Ireland lose out to Scotland after taking third-quarter lead

IRELAND SUFFERED A 3-2 loss to Scotland in their penultimate EuroHockey Championship outing. After taking the lead in the third quarter thanks to a Roisin Upton penalty stroke, Scotland drew level early in quarter four, also from the spot. Katie Mullan fired into the corner to restore Ireland's lead, but a fortuitous goal for Scotland, followed by a finish from a penalty corner saw them secure the points. EWOUT PAHUD DE MORTANGES EWOUT PAHUD DE MORTANGES Scotland set their press well after a goalless first half to pin Ireland back again in the second half. Ireland however, found ways through the press to better effect. After winning the ball high up the pitch, Ireland found Mullan free in the circle. The Coleraine native drew a foul as she wound up for a shot on goal, winning a penalty stroke which Upton dispatched to give Ireland the lead and their first goal of the Championship. Scotland responded, winning a penalty corner which Ireland defended well which resulted in a re-award. Sarah Torrans ran down the second effort for another re-award, with Ireland defending once again. The Scottish pressure continued into the final quarter, with Ireland forced to defend a player down due to an early green card for Emily Kealy. Ireland conceded a penalty stroke for a coming together in the circle, which Scotland converted to level the scoring with 11 minutes remaining. Ireland restored their lead less than two minutes later, with Mullan once again at the centre of things as she fired into the bottom corner. Scotland had a response, winning a penalty corner with eight minutes remaining, which Amy Costello struck into the net to bring Scotland level once again. A moment of luck for Scotland saw the ball cannon off the post from a long ball, rebound off Murphy and fall for Heather McEwan to tap in at the other post. Ireland substituted Elizabeth Murphy with five minutes remaining in favour of an extra outfield player as they looked to draw level. However, Scotland held firm to maintain their lead and secure the 3-2 win. Ireland will face England in their final outing in Monchengladbach on Sunday at 8:30am Irish Time. The game will be available to watch live on RTÉ News in the Republic of Ireland and on EuroHockeyTV in Northern Ireland.

Liverpool stars withdraws from squad hours before Premier League opener

Ben Doak won't be taking to the pitch for Liverpool tonight as he's on the brink of a transfer to their opponents, Bournemouth. The two teams are set to clash in the inaugural Premier League match of the season at Anfield. Bournemouth is nearing a £25million agreement for the Scottish international, having outmanoeuvred Porto and Stuttgart. Doak, 19, is eager to stay in the Premier League after spending the previous season on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough. Liverpool shelled out £600,000 to secure the promising youngster from Celtic in 2022, with high expectations under Jurgen Klopp. However, injuries and the calibre of players ahead of him have hindered his progress, and he will now pursue regular first-team football on the south coast. Ben Doak is set to leave Liverpool (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) The deal could trigger a chain reaction of deals with Bournemouth's Dango Ouattara poised to join Brentford for up to £42.5m. That could then see the Bees part ways with Yoane Wissa who has not been training with the club as he looks to join Newcastle. Unfortunately for Liverpool, Wissa is not seen as a replacement for Alexander Isak by the Magpies. The Reds saw a bid knocked back for the Sweden forward who continues to train separately from Newcastle's first team. Speaking in his press conference ahead of Newcastle 's Premier League opener against Aston Villa, Eddie Howe suggested there had been no progress in any direction over the 25-year-old's future. "Alex's situation has been unchanged for a while, and that will continue to be the case," he said. That did not prevent a barrage of questions however. "I've had a great relationship with Alex," he said. "You need that with every player. I take my part in that relationship really importantly. I have to work really closely with the player to his benefit." Asked if a fresh bid had been placed for Isak, Howe responded: "No, there has been no change, all my focus has been on training and Villa and the transfer front." Asked if the star forward could remain at St James' Park beyond the transfer deadline, he said: "At the moment I would say yes but I've had no change of feeling throughout the summer. He's contracted to us but it's out of my hands."

Man Utd's misery, Keith Andrews' big test and the Man City question – Premier League talking points

Van Dijk will lead Liverpool into action in today's Community Shield final against Crystal Palace at Wembley and if the storylines set to unfold over the next 10 months are as unpredictable as they were last season, we are in for a wonderful journey. The prospect of Liverpool winning the title following Jurgen Klopp's exit last summer seemed fanciful this time last year, while a combination of Newcastle and Crystal Palace winning the domestic cup competitions in England was an even more improbable scenario. After a summer of lavish spending by England's top clubs, the pressure is set to be ramped up in the race for the big prizes. Here are five bold predictions for the new season. Ruben Amorim has his work cut out at Manchester United. Photo: Andrew J Clark/Getty Ruben Amorim looked like a manager eager to be put out of his misery in the final weeks of last season having been quickly pushed to the edge by a toxic culture at Manchester United that has broken a succession of the club's former managers. The summer signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were Amorim's first attempt to change a depressing script at United, but so many of the cast list who have led this great club down a spiral of decline are still on the squad list a week before the start of the new season. Amorim has suggested he has seen a change of attitude during United's pre-season games, but the panic button will be pressed if they are beaten by Arsenal at Old Trafford in their opening game next Sunday and they also have games against Manchester City and Chelsea in the first month of the season. Verdict: After a 15th-place finish last season, it may seem as if things can only get better, yet this club is failing on and off the field, so Amorim will do well to see out his first full season as United boss. Keith Andrews will have to hit the ground running in his new role as Brentford manager or face the consequences. Photo: PA Thomas Frank built Brentford into a stable Premier League outfit and his move to Tottenham has left a huge void at the London club, with the appointment of former Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews greeted with a degree of pessimism in the English media. Sacked Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was a leading contender for the role and is believed to have spoken to Brentford about the role, but Andrews got the nod and his lack of frontline managerial experience may be a primary reason why he has been installed as the bookies' favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season. Brentford have lost some key players this summer and Andrews faces a big task to maintain the momentum Frank built up, with a slow start likely to pile the pressure on the Dubliner. Verdict: If Brentford are flirting with relegation by Christmas, he may find himself replaced by a more experienced operator. Jack Grealish would be a welcome addition to Everton's ranks. Photo: Neal Simpson/Getty Everton's move to their sparkling new stadium will be a momentous moment for the club, but manager David Moyes has admitted his summer transfer plans have reached a worrying impasse. Moyes has suggested he is looking to sign 'five or six players' before the transfer window slams shut after admitting they have issues around depth of squad as well as the quality he is working with. Everton released five senior players, including striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure after their contracts expired this summer, and Moyes appeared to be sending a message to his owners when he suggested he was 'desperate' for new signings in a brutally honest press briefing last week. Verdict: Jack Grealish has been linked with a move to Everton and a signing of that quality would lift the mood as right now, alarm bells are ringing. Manchester City were charged with 115 breaches of the game's financial fair play rules in February 2023 and the delay in concluding their case has created a worrying cloud over the game. City could be handed a big points penalty, a transfer embargo or a record-breaking fine if they are found guilty and there have been suggestions in recent weeks that they may be prepared to thrash out some sort of a deal with the Premier League to resolve the case. That needs to happen, as every Man City trophy lift will be tainted by the never-ending suspicion that they have broken the rules to achieve their success in recent years. Even if they are found guilty of a handful of charges, the points deductions handed to Everton and Nottingham Forest for financial breaches suggest a similar punishment may be coming City's way. Verdict: A heavy points penalty for City will end their title hopes for the season, with manager Pep Guardiola suggesting he will walk away from his role if the club have broken the rules. This could be the biggest story of the season when it is finally resolved. Caoimhín Kelleher has joined forces with Republic of Ireland teammate Nathan Collins at Brentford this season. Photo: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile This looks set to be a summer when spending records will be shattered by Premier League clubs, but who has made the best moves? Liverpool shattered their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz and while the German international may need some time to adapt to the pace of the Premier League, this 22-year-old is too good to fail at Anfield. Hugo Ekitike has more to prove as he needs to confirm he can be a game-changer in the Premier League following his move from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the same is true of Arsenal's big summer signing, the Swede Victor Gyokeres. The Gunners may have won the 2023/24 title if they had a striker who could finish off the chances they were missing and they hope Gyokeres will provide the solution, but he faces a big step up in class to shine in the Premier League. Ireland's No 1 Caoimhín Kelleher is also preparing to take on a big challenge this season as he looks to prove he can shine as a first choice goalkeeper following his big-money move to Brentford. Verdict: Wirtz will light up the Premier League, but Gyokeres may not be the instant hit Arsenal need him to be. That will pile pressure on manager Mikel Arteta, who needs to win silverware this season.
