Gov't to advance deportation of terrorists with Israeli citizenship, Katz says

Ofir Katz noted that he had been fighting for this legislation for two years, calling the move "historic.'
Four people convicted of terrorism are in the process of deportation and the revocation of their Israeli citizenship, Defense Minister Israel Katz, coalition whip Ofir Katz (Likud), and Interior Minister Moshe Arbel announced on Wednesday.
A confidential status update discussion was held in the Knesset House Committee about the implementation of the law and where it stands, the three added. They said the process of expulsion has begun for hundreds more.
The bill allowing the deportation was passed into law two years ago at the behest of Ofir Katz, who proposed it. The implementation had been held up since, said the three legislators.
The convicted are set to be expelled to the West Bank. The law also states that they could go to the Gaza Strip, but it's not clear how much of a possibility that is given the Israel-Hamas War and that the enclave is mostly uninhabitable.
The confidential discussion focused on monitoring the implementation of the law to remove citizenship and deport terrorists receiving payments from the Palestinian Authority.
'Terrorists and their supporters will not receive any compensation for what they do. Anyone who chooses murder and hate will be expelled, their citizenship will be nullified, and they will pay the full price,' said the defense minister.
Adalah, a Palestinian human rights legal aid organization, explained, 'The government is reportedly advancing these measures under a 2023 amendment to the Citizenship and Entry into Israel Law, which authorizes the revocation of the citizenship or permanent residency of individuals convicted of an offense that constitutes an 'act of terrorism' as defined by… [the] Counterterrorism Law or other specified offenses, and that according to the interior minister, received monetary benefits from the Palestinian Authority.'
Adalah added that it, along with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, appealed to the High Court to strike down an earlier version of the law. The court upheld the law but ruled that the interior minister must grant permanent residency status to replace citizenship.
The Knesset then passed the law revoking citizenship in 2023, without granting any legal status, if the individual received compensation from the PA, Adalah explained.
Ofir Katz noted that he had been fighting for this legislation for two years, saying, 'This is historic.'

Live updates: Israel attacks Yemeni port city of Hodeida

The Israeli navy attacked docks in Yemen's rebel-held port city of Hodeida on Tuesday, likely damaging facilities that are key to aid shipments to the hungry, war-wracked nation. The Israeli military said navy missile ships conducted the strikes, the first time its forces have been involved in attacks against the Houthi rebels. Tuesday's attack comes as the Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones targeting Israel during its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis announced the attack via their al-Masirah satellite news channel. They said the attack targeted docks there, without elaborating. ___ Here's the latest: Israel deports Greta Thunberg after seizing the ship she was on Activist Greta Thunberg is being deported from Israel, Israel's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday, after the Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized by the Israeli military. Israel says Greta Thunberg has been deported after Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized

JERUSALEM (AP) — Activist Greta Thunberg was deported from Israel Tuesday, the country's Foreign Ministry said, a day after the Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized by the Israeli military. In a post on X, the Foreign Ministry shared a photo of Thunberg on a plane, saying she had departed Israel and was headed to France before continuing on to Sweden. Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing Thunberg and the other activists, said Thunberg, two other activists and a journalist had agreed to be deported and leave Israel. Other activists refused deportation, were being held in detention and their case was set to be heard by Israeli authorities. Thunberg was one of 12 passengers on board the Madleen, a boat carrying aid destined for people in war-torn Gaza. Israeli naval forces seized the boat early Monday about 200 kilometers (125 miles) off of Gaza's coast, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the group that organized the journey. The boat, accompanied by Israel's navy, arrived in the Israeli port of Ashdod Monday evening, according to Israel's Foreign Ministry. The activists said they were protesting the ongoing war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel says such ships violate its naval blockade of Gaza. Israel's Foreign Ministry portrayed the voyage as a public relations stunt, saying on social media that 'the 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel.'

Israel commits 'extermination' in Gaza by killing in schools, UN experts say

By Francois Murphy VIENNA (Reuters) -U.N. experts said in a report on Tuesday that Israel committed the crime against humanity of "extermination" by killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites in Gaza, part of a "concerted campaign to obliterate Palestinian life." The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel was due to present the report to Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council on June 17. "We are seeing more and more indications that Israel is carrying out a concerted campaign to obliterate Palestinian life in Gaza," former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who chairs the commission, said in a statement. "Israel's targeting of the educational, cultural and religious life of the Palestinian people will harm the present generations and generations to come, hindering their right to self-determination," she added. The commission examined attacks on educational facilities and religious and cultural sites to assess if international law was breached. Israel disengaged from the Human Rights Council in February, alleging it was biased. When the commission's last report in March found Israel carried out "genocidal acts" against Palestinians by systematically destroying women's healthcare facilities during the conflict in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the findings were biased and antisemitic. In its latest report, the commission said Israel had destroyed more than 90% of the school and university buildings and more than half of all religious and cultural sites in Gaza. "Israeli forces committed war crimes, including directing attacks against civilians and wilful killing, in their attacks on educational facilities ... In killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites, Israeli security forces committed the crime against humanity of extermination," it said. The war was triggered when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in Israel in a surprise attack in October 2023, and took 251 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. Israel responded with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Harm done to the Palestinian education system was not confined to Gaza, the report found, citing increased Israeli military operations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as well as harassment of students and settler attacks there. "Israeli authorities have also targeted Israeli and Palestinian educational personnel and students inside Israel who expressed concern or solidarity with the civilian population in Gaza, resulting in their harassment, dismissal or suspension and in some cases humiliating arrests and detention," it said. "Israeli authorities have particularly targeted female educators and students, intending to deter women and girls from activism in public places," the commission added.
