X-Men actor Shawn Ashmore shares heartbreaking tribute after murder of friend

Shawn Ashmore has spoken out after the murder of his friend Mei Li Haskell, days after the suspect took his own life. The X-Men star, 45, and his wife Dana, 42, shared a heartbreaking tribute saying their 'hearts are heavy' but they do have some closure. Mei Li, 37, was murdered in her home in Tazana, California, on November 6, 2023, along with her mother Yanxiang Wang, 64, and her stepfather Gaoshan Li, 71. Sam Haskell IV, the son of a prominent Hollywood executive, was accused of the murders and took his own life on Saturday while awaiting trial. 'Our hearts are heavy, but we feel some small sense of peace knowing there is finally a bit of closure,' said Shawn and his wife in a statement. The couple reportedly helped local police with their investigation, so have not been able to address the case publicly until now. They continued: 'We are mourning the loss of an extraordinary mother, someone who poured her entire heart into her three boys and never stopped putting them first.' The Boys actor initially met Mei Li in 2022 through their children, who became friends after going to school in the same area. 'She was so generous, so kind, so loving,' Dana said to TMZ. 'She's someone that never deserved this.' The outlet reports she was discovered after being dismembered and her body brutally disposed of in the bin. Her parents' bodies were not found. Mei Li was a devoted mother as well as an avid pickleball player and loved collecting Pokémon cards, according to the couple. One memory shared was when she brought a children's cooking set from China for their kids as a gift. '[Mei Li] was more than a friend; she went above and beyond for everyone who had the gift of knowing her. Her love, her laughter, her warmth — she's deeply missed, and always will be.' More Trending Haskell was found dead in his cell in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, with TMZ reporting he left behind a note saying he would miss his 'three best friends', meaning his sons. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said of the suicide: 'Instead of standing before a judge and answering for the crimes he's been charged with, the defendant managed to escape justice. 'This is one last cruel act by someone who did the most horrific things for reasons we will never entirely know.' Got a story? British backpacker accused of killing Australian man in drunken e-scooter crash

An English backpacker accused of killing a dad-of-two in an e-scooter crash while riding drunk has appeared in court in Western Australia. Alicia Kemp, 25, from Redditch in Worcestershire, is said to have been more than three times above the legal alcohol limit when she collided with Thanh Phan, 51, in Perth's city centre on May 31. Mr Phan died in hospital days later after suffering a brain bleed. Kemp, a criminology and psychology graduate, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death under the influence of alcohol. She is also accused of dangerous driving causing bodily harm under the influence of alcohol. She is yet to enter a plea. Kemp, who was denied bail at a hearing in June, appeared at Perth Magistrates' Court via video link on Tuesday. She will remain behind bars until her case returns to court on August 11 for legal argument. The charge of dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. More Trending Under Western Australian law, e-scooter riders must wear a helmet, be sober, carry no passengers and be aged over 16 years old. Mr Phan's family, who described him as a 'beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend', have called for a review of e-scooter laws. The WA government has since announced a parliamentary inquiry into the safety of e-bikes and e-scooters, 9News reports. Burglar hammers his way into shop and nabs $100,000 in rare Pokémon cards

The bandit had to 'catch 'em all!' A burglar used a hammer to break into a collectibles ship in Massachusetts and made off with more than $100,000 worth of rare Pokémon cards. The thief entered 1st Edition Collectible in New Bedford around 2.30am last Tuesday, took the trading cards from a display case and stuffed them in a bag and fled, according to one of the storeowners. 'They were in and out of our store within 30 seconds,' William Gilmour told The New York Times on Sunday. 'They went straight to these high-value items.' A CCTV image posted by the shop on Facebook shows a person wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a facemask kneeling in front of a glass display case full of cards. In another post, the shop shared a list of stolen items along with some photos of them, and asked the public to be on the lookout for them. 'The overwhelming support that we've received from you all this week has been amazing and a reminder as to why we love this hobby and the community involved so much,' the shop wrote. Among the stolen items are a BGS 8.5 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard, a BGS 8.5 Skyridge Crystal Charizard, a PSA 9 Gold Star Charizard, a Pokémon Base Set Unlimited Green Wings Booster Box, and a Pokémon Neo Revelation Unlimited Booster Box. 'They are really rare because how many sealed boxes are still there from 1999 to 2000?' Gilmour said. The burglar took five rare cards and vintage box sets that totaled $100,000 to $113,000 in value, according to Gilmour. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made and the crime remained under investigation, according to New Bedford Police Department spokeswoman Holly Huntoon. The shop is located about 60 miles south of Boston. More Trending 'Seriously, thank you all for bringing some comfort to us during this crazy time,' stated the shop on social media. 'This incident was devastating but we will bounce back, grow, and come back better than ever.' Pokémon, meaning pocket monsters, were created in Japan and became wildly popular in the 1990s worldwide as people collected the trading cards and played the video games. It happened about nine months after burglars broke into a store in Cincinnati, Ohio, and weirdly stole more than 100 right-footed shoes.
