Malaysia, Singapore explore importing wind energy from Vietnam
KUALA LUMPUR : Major power companies in Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam have agreed to explore renewable energy links across their borders, as Southeast Asia takes steps to realise its long-held vision of a regional supergrid.
The 'industry alliance' will look to export green electricity, especially offshore wind power, from Vietnam to the other two countries, according to a statement from Singapore's Sembcorp Industries Ltd today.
The pact comes as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations steps up efforts to connect its 10 member countries through a regional power grid, which is seen as critical to meeting ambitious climate targets and voracious demand from sectors like artificial intelligence and data centres.
Still, the region will need to significantly ramp up grid investment to accommodate rapidly expanding renewables.
Announced on the sidelines of an Asean summit in Kuala Lumpur, the collaboration will bring together a unit established by Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd and state-owned oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Bhd and subsidiaries of Sembcorp and PetroVietnam, the statement said.
The countries will evaluate the feasibility of exporting clean energy from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore via a new subsea cable and through the Malaysian grid, the statement said.
Currently, there are more than a dozen projects underway in Asean related to the regional power grid.

The Johor government is targeting 12 million visitors from home and abroad in conjunction with TMJ 2026. Lim said package deals with itineraries that combine Legoland Malaysia and other locations, such as Mersing Island, Desaru, as well as eco-tourism and cultural heritage attractions, are also offered to allow visitors to explore interesting destinations in Johor. He said the park currently receives a significant number of visitors not only from within Malaysia but also from neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Indonesia, which contributes to strong economic spillover in the Iskandar Puteri area. 'Our presence supports the local economy, including hotel operations, shopping malls, transport services, and food and beverage outlets. This, in turn, generates job opportunities for the local community,' he said. Lim also shared that comprehensive preparations are already underway to accommodate the expected surge in visitors by 2026. These include upgrading key facilities, enhancing staff skills, hiring additional personnel, and planning for improved visitor capacity management, which may involve extending the park's operating hours, he said. Lim said Johor has the potential to emerge as a leading regional tourist destination, citing its strategic location and the development of key infrastructure projects such as the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and expanded transportation networks. 'Johor is easily accessible to international and regional tourists, without relying solely on domestic flights. Visitors can travel via road, ferry, or flight from Kuala Lumpur and Changi Airport. 'Therefore, we see Johor as a strategic location and not a challenge due to its proximity to Singapore (with the Johor Causeway), which is one of the busiest travel hubs in the region,' he added. — Bernama

Kuching to have longest riverfront and new landmark garden

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kuching Waterfront is to be extended and will be Malaysia's longest river waterfront under a development plan by the Kuching North City Hall which includes a 16-hectare floral garden, inspired by Singapore's Gardens by the Bay. Kucing North mayor Hilmy Othman said the extended Kuching Waterfront will run from Sungai Bintangor to the Satok Bridge, the Borneo Post reported. The project is part of plans by the city hall (DBKU) to transform Kuching into a low-carbon, globally competitive capital city under Sarawak's development strategy. The 16-hectare floral garden, one of the headline projects, is to be developed near Jalan Astana. Hilmy said the floral garden would serve as a major public attraction and eco-tourism destination, drawing both tourists and plant lovers. Complementing this is the upcoming Bamboo Gallery, a 25-hectare green architecture and sustainability education centre near Jalan Crookshank. 'These projects aim to preserve the site's natural greenery and heritage,' Hilmy said. He said DBKU would continue investing in infrastructure that blends sustainability with public benefit. The city has already installed more than 2,000 smart streetlights to cut energy use and reduce maintenance costs, along with over 300 CCTVs to boost security. A smart parking system, set to replace the coupon model, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 and integrated into the iDBKU digital platform.

Sarawak to be first state with diversity unit

(Ukas pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak will be the first state in the country to set up a diversity, equality and inclusivity unit, premier Abang Johari Openg revealed. The unit, known as D2EI for diversity, equality, equity and inclusivity, will be set up in the state department of women and family development, The Borneo Post reported. Abang Johari said the D2EI principles are in line with his administration's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which emphasises inclusivity. He also believes that these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. For now, Abang Johari said the state government hopes to boost the involvement of women in high-growth sectors, by providing support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and startup assistance. 'We have asked the banks to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he was quoted as saying. This is not the first time Sarawak has introduced progressive policies. In 2023, it became the first state in Malaysia to have an ombudsman law. DEI policies, whose origins date back to the US civil rights movement, made headlines after US president Donald Trump issued an executive order after taking office in January directing government agency chiefs to dismantle DEI policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector.
