Leagues Cup roundup: Unbeaten Toluca knock out NYCFC
Paulinho scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 39th minute and Toluca again came from behind to earn a 2-1 road victory over New York City FC on Matchday 3 of Leagues Cup opening-phase play on Tuesday.
Jesus Angulo recorded his second of the tournament in the 37th minute for Toluca (2-0-1, 8 points), which moved momentarily to the top of the standings on the Liga MX side. Four Mexican teams and four MLS teams will earn quarterfinal berths.
Alonso Martinez scored his second goal of the tournament for New York City FC (1-2-0, 3 points), which was eliminated with the defeat.
The Cityzens became the second straight Leagues Cup opponent to lose to Toluca after scoring first, and the third to drop points.
Crew 1, Club Leon 0
Max Arfsten scored early in the second half to give host Columbus a victory against already-eliminated Leon.
Patrick Schulte made four saves to keep his first tournament clean sheet to go with two so far during the MLS regular season.
That was enough to push the Crew (2-0-1, 7 points) for the moment to the top of the MLS side of the standings. But as of the final whistle, eight sides still had the chance to surpass Columbus in their final opening-phase matches.
Leon (0-2-1, 1 point) went their last 259 minutes of play without scoring after Rogelio Funes Mori's early strike in a 1-1 draw against CF Montreal on Matchday 1.
CF Pachuca 2, Houston Dynamo 1
Gaston Togni's 85th-minute winner lifted visiting Pachuca momentarily to second in the Liga MX standings.
Luis Quinones gave the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners the lead in the 24th minute as the Tuzos (2-0-1, 7 points) tried to prolong their bid for another continental honor.
Amine Bassi pulled Houston (0-3-0, 0 points) level from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute on a foul awarded by referee Adonis Carrasco following video review.
However, Togni's goal came only three minutes later. It was enough to secure victory against Dynamo, who have scored one goal or fewer in 10 of their past 11 matches in all competitions.
Puebla 2, CF Montreal 1
Ricardo Marin scored in the 73rd minute as visiting Puebla eventually seized on a lengthy numerical advantage to rally past Montreal and keep their knockout-phase hopes alive.
Emiliano Gomez added his second goal of the tournament for Puebla (2-1-0, 6 points) earlier in the second half after seeing his first-half penalty kick saved.
Montreal's Joel Waterman was sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity on the foul that led to the penalty. However, Prince Owusu scored his second goal of the tournament early in the second half to briefly give CF Montreal (0-2-1, 2 points) the lead on a night when their elimination became official.
Both teams finished with 10 men when Raul Castillo received his second caution in second-half stoppage time.

Will Son Heung-Min make LAFC debut vs. Fire?
(Photo credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images) Fresh off one of the biggest acquisitions in MLS history, Los Angeles FC look to begin a new run of positive results in MLS play. Meanwhile, the Chicago Fire's collective confidence continues to grow as they string together wins. However, it's uncertain whether new star Son Heung-Min will be available when visiting LAFC tries to keep the Fire from a third consecutive league victory Saturday night at Bridgeview, Ill. Looking to improve their playoff position in the Western Conference, LAFC (10-6-6, 36 points) made a huge splash with the signing of the South Korean standout and former Tottenham Hotspur forward this week. The 33-year-old Son, who scored more than 170 goals over all competitions with the English Premier League power, was acquired by LAFC for an MLS-record $26.5 million transfer fee. He also signed a contract with LAFC that could take him through 2029. Though Son has been active of late, it's not known whether he'll debut this weekend as LAFC looks to bounce back from a 1-0 home loss to Portland on July 25 in their last MLS action. Head coach Steve Cherundolo suggested Friday that Son is working through the 'immigration process.' Once that is complete, it shouldn't take long for Son to find a place in the lineup. 'My fitness is great,' Son noted at this week's introductory media gathering. 'I came here to play soccer, and I'm ready to play. But, there's preparation to be done, and I'll work with the coaching staff and others to get on the pitch as soon as possible.' Meanwhile, new teammate Denis Bouanga and his 13 MLS goals could be set to go after he did not play in this week's Leagues Cup victory over Tigres. Bouanga scored in four of his last five MLS road matches. Chicago (10-9-5, 35 points), meanwhile, looks to improve its position in the East standings as the Fire enter August on a 2-0-1 run. Hugo Cuypers scored two of his team-leading 14 goals as the Fire beat CF Montreal and New York Red Bulls by a combined 3-0 in their last two MLS matches. 'It's pretty positive when (the team gets the defensive) part right, and hopefully we can stay consistent,' Cuypers said. These sides last met in 2019, when they played to a scoreless draw at Los Angeles.

Sporting KC puts slim playoff chances on the line vs. San Diego FC
(Photo credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-Imagn Images) Sporting Kansas City will try to keep their slim playoff hopes alive when they host Western Conference-leading San Diego FC on Saturday night. Kansas City (6-12-6, 24 points) is six points behind the ninth and final playoff position in the West with 10 matches remaining. The club's last match was a 3-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 26, its third consecutive winless result (0-2-1). SKC's 45 goals allowed are the 4th-highest total in MLS. They hope that center back Alan Montes, brought in on loan from Club Necaxa in Liga MX, can help in that regard. 'I'm a player who maintains a lot of order in the defensive zone,' Montes said, according to the Kansas City Star. 'That's what I'm looking for in this team, to establish order above all else, and for the team to become solid in defense.' Despite a 2-0 win over Mazatlan on Tuesday, San Diego (14-7-4, 46 points) failed to advance past the group stage of Leagues Cup thanks to earlier losses to Liga MX sides Pachuca and Tigres UANL. That's been one of the few missteps for the first-year outfit, which holds a one-point lead over the Whitecaps for first place in the West -- though Vancouver has a match in hand. San Diego's last MLS match, a 1-0 win over Nashville SC on July 25, saw Andres Dreyer extend his league-leading assist total to 16. 'Our feeling is that we're going to face kind of like a mid-low block team that's going to look to counterattack us, catch us on set pieces,' San Diego head coach Mikey Varas said of Kansas City. 'But we'll be ready for whatever because we've had other teams that have that kind of ethos and then try to surprise us with men marking and on goal kicks or something like that.' While Varas has had tremendous success so far, he was quick to credit others when asked on Thursday what he's learned in his first season coaching in MLS. 'It's a credit to everybody who's involved, everyone from ownership to leadership to people selling tickets in the front office to our football leadership to our staff to our players,' Varas said. 'Great things are done with other people and for other people, and I just feel really blessed to be a part of this.'

Atlanta United bringing confidence into match at CF Montreal
(Photo credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images) Wins have been hard to come by for Atlanta United this season, across all competitions. Before Wednesday's Leagues Cup victory against Atlas FC, they hadn't won since a 3-2 triumph against Orlando City back on May 28. They'll attempt to build off that Leagues Cup triumph when they visit fellow struggling squad CF Montreal on Saturday. Atlanta (4-11-9, 21 points) enters the match in 13th place in the Eastern Conference, 14 points behind the cutoff line and just three points ahead of Montreal (4-15-6, 18 points). Before the MLS paused for the Leagues Cup tournament, the Five Stripes were winless in eight, going 0-4-4 during that stretch. 'Hopefully we can take that confidence (from the win on Wednesday) into the weekend,' Atlanta coach Ronny Deila said. 'Now we have to try to repeat and keep consistent in our performances. Then we will get more results. Still a lot to play for this season, 10 games left, 30 points. ... We're going to take it game by game.' While they've managed to create and generate 60 shot attempts over their past five MLS matches, getting those attempts on target has been an issue, with only 16 of them reaching the net. Atlanta has managed just 91 shots on target through 24 matches, tied for fifth-fewest in the league, and is third from the bottom in accurate shooting percentage at 32 percent. Atlanta defeated Montreal 3-2 in the season opener for both sides back in February. The Five Stripes will be looking for their first road win of the season (0-7-4). Montreal hopes to pick up where it left off before the Leagues Cup, having earned its fourth win of the season, 3-1 against the New England Revolution, to snap a four-match winless run. The Canadian side also won its first match in the Leagues Cup (on penalties) before dropping the next two. 'I think some players have discovered new facets to their game, and that's a big positive for our team,' Montreal interim coach Marco Donadel said. 'We're also much more resilient to face the challenges that lie ahead.' One of those challenges is winning at home, where Montreal is 1-7-3, the fewest home victories in all of MLS. Its lone triumph came back on June 28 against New York City FC. The club's season-long offensive struggles are especially notable at home, where it's scored more than one goal only once -- in a 2-2 draw against LAFC on May 24. Prince Owusu leads Montreal with 11 goals, while Emmanuel Latte Lath paces Atlanta with seven.
