Netflix top boss thought Sanjay Leela Bhansali pitched Heeramandi to them to be rejected: 'It almost felt like a dare'
When Heeramandi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus, was greenlit by Netflix, it was hailed as a landmark moment for Indian streaming. Bhansali has the legacy of being Indian cinema's most visually opulent showman. His films are larger-than-life and lavish. Hence, a series on the same scale was unthinkable. In a recent chat, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that he felt that the filmmaker almost wanted 'no' for an answer when he pitched the show.
Speaking on Nikhil Kamath's WTF podcast, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos talked about the scale of Heeramandi and said, 'Heeramandi was probably one of the most creatively interesting projects I've worked on in India. I was involved in the greenlighting meetings for it. He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) came to LA to do the pitch. He came in with this very big vision. Honestly, it almost felt like a dare—like he was saying, 'I dare you to make this; it's so big. He's a legend of cinema, so the idea of him making a TV Show was unheard of. I thought he came for us to say no. And then, when we said yes, there were lots of delays. It was a complicated production.'
Announced in 2021, Heeramandi took almost three years to make and produce before it was released on the platform in May 2024. 'He built these enormous, practical sets that we shot on. There was something beautifully old-fashioned about every element of the production. And he was so proud of it. I was so proud of him. To me, Heeramandi is a true reflection of India's deep, enduring love for cinema,' Sarandos added.
Heeramandi is a fictional tale set in the famous red light district of Lahore in pre-Partition undivided India. Bhansali had initially conceived the story as a film in 2007. It was later revived as a show in which Bhansali wanted to cast Pakistani actors Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, and Imran Abbas. But those plans had to be shelved due to the virtual ban on Pakistani artists in India after 2016. Heermandi stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, and Taha Shah Badussha.

With its opening weekend collection of ₹ 87 crore, Housefull 5 is now Akshay Kumar's biggest first weekend after the COVID-19 pandemic, beating Sooryavanshi ( ₹ 77 crore). Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the movie's weekend collection is 'an excellent result by all standards.' He also said that Housefull 5 has a 'loud and clear' audience approval is loud and clear, despite poor critic reviews. 'Most importantly, the Housefull franchise continues to be critic-proof – no amount of negativity or trolling has impacted its Box Office.' According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Housefull 5 minted a whopping ₹ 32 crore on Sunday, June 8. This was 3.23 per cent more than what it earned on Saturday. Prosenjit Chatterjee recalls being depressed after separation from Debashree Roy: ‘There's no use in crying'
Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee was once married to fellow actor Debashree Roy, but the two parted ways shortly after tying the knot. In a recent interview with Times Now, Prosenjit opened up about the difficult phase following their separation, revealing that he slipped into depression and began working less during that period. I also want to know') Prosenjit spoke about the emotional toll of his divorce and said, "Ek samay aaya tha, mai kaam kam kar raha tha (There was a time when I was working less). I was in a little depressed mood, I was not doing proper work. We blamed each other, but we were young at that time. After that separation, I was in a place where I was not coming out. And amid this, the most leading newspaper in Bengal came out with pointers of actors of Bengal. Usme 1-10 tk me mera naam nahi tha (I was not mentioned in that list of 1 to 10), and I was going through that depression mode." He recalled how he dealt with the situation and said, "The day I came back to the set, I signed nine films. It is not me, it is my blessing. Mera characteristic is aisa hai (That is my characteristic). I feel there's no point in showing emotions. But everyone has a space of their own — I have a small garden, and that's my space. I don't talk to anybody. Those 30 days were important for me to reconnect with myself. There's no use in crying." Prosenjit and Debashree had known each other since childhood. After their separation, Prosenjit found love again with Aparna Guha Thakurta, with whom he shares a daughter, Prerona Chatterjee. However, his second marriage too eventually ended in divorce. Meanwhile, on the work front, Prosenjit was last seen in the Netflix series Khakee: The Bengal Chapter. He will next be seen in the movie Maalik, which also stars Manushi Chhillar and Medha Shankr in key roles. The gangster action thriller, directed by Pulkit and produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, is scheduled to release in theatres on July 11.
