Major Coronation Street legend exits after 25 years in ITVX streaming release

Metroa day ago

This article contains spoilers for tonight's Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX.
It was the end of an era in Coronation Street today as Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) waved goodbye to the cobbles after 25 years.
After the death of sister Julie Carp, Eileen was left questioning the direction of her life and whether she was happy in her relationship with George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).
When son Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) asked her to move to Thailand and invest in his bar, she was hesitant, but George was keen to encourage her.
Determined to make her happy, George booked them a trip to Thailand so they could have a trial run at living out there – but in tonight's episode their plans changed drastically.
The reality of the situation finally hit George after a conversation with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), and he decided to sit down with Eileen for a serious discussion.
He revealed that he could sense that the love in their relationship was rather one-sided, and eventually got Eileen to admit that she didn't love him more than a dear friend.
That was all George needed to know, and he made the decision not to continue their relationship or accompany her on holiday. More Trending
However, with her relationship with George over, Eileen realised that there was no reason she couldn't make her trip to Thailand a permanent one.
After some thinking, she told colleagues Steve and Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) that she was going to invest in Jason's bar after all.
Of course, before heading to the airport, Eileen had to take a trip to the Rovers for a farewell drink with her neighbours, and it was there that Steve and Tim surprised her with a special send off from the Streetcars drivers.

As Eileen said her final goodbyes, even George appeared to wish her well, and she headed off in the back of a black cab with Jason by her side.

Joe Tate's torment of Billy continues as he makes vile accusation in Emmerdale

It doesn't look like any hatchets will be buried for Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) or Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) anytime soon in Emmerdale – except in each other's backs. Billy has got the absolute measure of evil Joe and is desperately trying to get his family away from him. Clemmie became so full of hatred for Joe that she called social services and said she was afraid of him, such was her desire to have him gone and her family back together. She later said this was a lie, but she wasn't done trying to get him gone. Clemmie later went missing on Joe's watch and turned up at Sam Dingle's (James Hooton) where she told Joe to his face how much she hated him. Seeing his kids so distraught, Billy wants rid of Joe, which is a real pain in Joe's side. In a bid to numb said pain, Joe tried a different tact, attempting to buy Billy off with the promise of a decent job in Liverpool – telling him he'd live away five days a week and see the kids at weekends. Billy saw right through this and emphatically rebuffed Joe's offer as the unscrupulous businessman branded him a loser, which was met with a swift and painful shove from his wheelchair. But though Clemmie said she'd lied about being afraid of Joe, she still hates him. Later, while under his care, she went missing on purpose to cause more trouble, causing Billy to demand that Dawn leave Home Farm for their children's safety. Sue Cleaver reflects on '25 years of laughs' after Coronation Street exit

Eileen Grimshaw had a special send-off during Friday's episode of the soap, where she was seen leaving for Thailand alongside her son Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas. Simon Gregson's character Steve McDonald, Tony Maudsley's George Shuttleworth, and Eileen's son Todd, played by Gareth Pierce, all said goodbye to the matriarch before drivers from the local taxi firm honked their horns as she was driven off. In an Instagram post, Cleaver said: 'Well… that's a wrap. 25 years of laughs, tears, costumes, chaos — and one unforgettable journey. A post shared by Sue Cleaver (@officialsuecleaver) 'I'll miss this character like crazy, but what a ride it's been. Thank you for every moment.' Cleaver has played the outspoken and uncomplicated Eileen in the ITV show since 2000. Eileen came to Weatherfield to work at the local taxi firm, Streetcars, to provide for her two tearaway teenage children, Jason and Todd. She soon became friends with her boss Steve and came into conflict with Helen Worth's character Gail Rodwell (also known as Gail Platt). Cleaver took part in I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022, where she opened up about reconciling with her birth mother, and was eliminated third. She also said her family is 'bizarrely interconnected' to other Coronation Street stars, including Worth who is godmother to one of her half-sisters, while her other half-sister's husband, John Bowe, appeared on the cobbles as Duggie Ferguson. In 2024, she released a book A Work In Progress in which she discusses how she feels she is not past her prime. In recent years she has appeared as a panellist on ITV chat show Loose Women.
