Midnapore:
Nasrin Khatun
, one of the five women who developed severe complications post-C-section delivery at
Midnapore Medical College
in Jan, died late on Sunday. West Midnapore chief medical officer Soumyashankar Sharangi said that Khatun died from
multi-organ failure
while undergoing dialysis.
"This is an extremely tragic incident," he said. While the women's families had claimed expired Ringer's lactate was administered on the new mothers, a probe had pointed at human error, too. Earlier, another of the five affected new mothers, Mamoni Ruidas, had died at MMCH. Nasrin, along with Minara Bibi and Mampi Singh, was shifted to SSKM on Jan 12 and admitted to the critical care unit.
While Minara and Mampi were discharged, Nasrin needed further dialysis and other treatment. She was later sent home but was again admitted to SSKM around 10 days ago, after her health started to fail at home. According to family members, Nasreen was initially admitted to a general bed and was expected to be released on May 10. But her condition deteriorated on May 9, when she started vomiting and experienced seizures. She was pronounced dead on Sunday night. After the MMCH incident in Jan, the Bengal govt had blacklisted Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals, a supplier of Ringer's lactate to state's Central Medical Store, from where saline bottles were disbursed to govt health facilities. The govt ordered an inquiry into the deaths of the two women, the supply of quality medicine in govt hospitals, and exemplary punishment for those responsible for the deaths.

BJP MLA's 2 kin die of snakebite in Palamu

Daltonganj: Two minor boys died, and their father was hospitalised after being bit by a snake inside their house under Chainpur police station limits in Palamu district in the intervening hours of Thursday and Friday. The victims are extended family members of BJP's incumbent Daltonganj MLA Alok Kumar Chourasia. Arjun Kumar (8) and his elder brother Deva (10) were bitten in their sleep at their home in Pathra village along with their father Prem. Bheem Chaurasia, the grandfather of the kids, said the trio were sleeping together. "They also set up a mosquito net. However, none of us know how the snake sneaked inside it," Bheem said. Reacting to it, BJP MLA Alok Chourasia said, "I was on way to Delhi last night when it occurred. The victims are my kin. Prem is doing fine now." All the three were taken to the MMCH for treatment. Palamu civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Srivastav said on duty doctors had administered polyvalent anti-venom injections. While the two children died at the hospital, Prem responded to the treatment and was then moved to a private hospital at Tumbagara, nearly 30 km away, on the family's request. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Enhance Online Presence and Get Customers [Try Now] Undo Family sources said the snake was spotted but it slithered down before being caught or killed. Global honour for SSKM doctor's ‘Bengal model'

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Endocrinology professor at SSKM Sujoy Ghosh 's innovative model for detection and treatment of paediatric diabetes in the public health system has won him recognition from International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes. He will receive the award in Montreal in Nov at a meet of the international organisation that aims to improve paediatric diabetes treatment. "This award is a recognition of the public health model that we managed to create in the secondary healthcare system for Type 1 diabetes," said Ghosh. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X: "ISPAD 2025 is not just an award — it is the Bengal govt's footprint on global healthcare." Doctors said children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes faced challenges in accessing insulin and syringes, glucose monitoring machines and strips, besides socio-psychological problems. To fill this gap, Ghosh and his team, with support from the state, developed non-communicable diseases (NCD) clinics in govt health set-ups. The first-of-its-kind project comprises detection, management, referral and rehabilitation, as well as keeping a registry for monitoring and follow-ups. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Daltonganj: The virology and Covid laboratory at the Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) here will be revived in the next fortnight amid rising Covid cases in the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Set up during the pandemic Covid 19 at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, the lab tested close to 1,500 samples daily when cases peaked in Jharkhand. However, it was shut down after a memorandum of understanding with an NGO expired while the pandemic was on the wane. MMCH principal Dr P N Mahto and Palamu civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar jointly inspected the lab on Monday after the state health department asked all districts to step up its preparedness. "The equipment is safe and requires only servicing. Other facilities like electricity, water supply too are not an issue," Mahto said. "We are planning to restart the lab within 15 days," he added. Mahto and Kumar also discussed the prospect of setting up a separate outpatient department (OPD) for attending to patients with influenza like illnesses and severely acute respiratory infections, considered the early symptoms for suspected Covid 19 patients. Kumar said all the hospital staff have been directed to document the names and contact numbers with such symptoms. "There is no shortage of PPE kits and medicines," he said.
