City pile misery on Mariners thanks to Memeti strike

Yahoo05-04-2025

With their A-League Men finals hopes already dashed, Central Coast have suffered more misery at the hands of Melbourne City after a 1-0 loss.
It was all City at AAMI Park on Saturday as teenage sensation Medin Memeti led the way on the scoreboard with the 29th-minute match-winner at AAMI Park.
The home side had bamboozled the Mariners for the opener by going short with a set piece just outside the box.
Receiving the quick pass, Marco Tilio sent a slicing cross to Kai Trevin on the left flank.
Trevin drew Mariners goalkeeper Dylan Peraic-Cullen off his line and toe-poked to Memeti who buried the ball himself.

Aurelio Vidmar's side are now closing in on a top-four finish in the league after securing back-to-back victories to sit third on 40 points.
With four matches remaining, 10th-placed Central Coast's finals hopes are all but shot.
Mark Jackson's men are on 25 points after suffering their eighth defeat of the season, eight points adrift of sixth-placed Adelaide United.
Poor communication between City shot-stopper Patrick Beach and centre-back German Ferreryra almost gifted an equaliser.
Beach was near the halfway line in the 52nd minute when his pass missed Ferrerya.
Central Coast striker Alou Kuol took possession and launched from long-range at an unmanned goal, but his shot went wide.
Mikael Doka tried to take matters into his own hands when he tried for goal from a free kick in the 85th minute, but the threat was palmed off by Beach.
The Mariners, looking to build after their 3-1 defeat of Perth Glory broke an eight-match winless streak, were unlucky not to find the scoreboard first after a number of early shots at goal.
Kuol had streamed downfield in the second minute to set up Christian Theoharous, but he could not add the finishing touch.
Brian Kaltak's left-footed shot was blocked six minutes later before Nathan Paull's attempt went just wide of the left post.
The reigning champions had struggled to break out of their own half in the second stanza with top-four side City exerting plenty of pressure.
They had 12 shots on target while none of the Mariners' seven strikes hit the target.

Manchester City sign Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli

Manchester City have announced the signing of goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea. The 33-year-old, who has signed a one-year contract, will provide back-up to first-choice keeper Ederson and regular deputy Stefan Ortega. Advertisement The former Fulham stopper's arrival comes after it was confirmed on Monday that veteran Scott Carson would be leaving the club when his contract expired at the end of June. Bettinelli will bolster the City goalkeeping ranks alongside Ederson (left) and Ortega (centre) after the departure of Scott Carson (right) (Adam Davy/PA) Bettinelli said: 'It's an honour to sign for City. I have admired from afar what this club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived and now, I am excited to be a part of building on that success.' Bettinelli, who made one senior appearance in four years at Stamford Bridge, is City's second signing of the summer after the £31.3million arrival of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves on Monday. The announcement also follows confirmation of the appointment of former Liverpool assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders as manager Guardiola's new number two. Advertisement The Dutchman, who has also coached at PSV Eindhoven, Porto and NEC Nijmegen, worked under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. He left Liverpool along with Klopp in the summer of 2024 and took up the post of manager at Red Bull Salzburg but was sacked last December. He will be joined at the Etihad Stadium by a new set-piece coach in James French, who moves after 13 years at Liverpool. Those appointments follow the departures of three members of Guardiola's backroom staff in Juanma Lillo, Inigo Dominguez and Carlos Vicens at the end of the 2024-25 season. City director of football Hugo Viana said: 'Pepijn and James have each amassed huge experience working in their individual roles over the past few years. 'Their talent, application, work ethic and all-round commitment are totally aligned with the values that underpin how Pep wants football to be played.'
