Grand final heroics just the start for Mariners' Gomez

Grand final heroics and a Matildas call-up are just the beginning for emerging midfield star Izzy Gomez. That's the view of Central Coast coach Emily Husband after her midfield maestro led the charge in the Mariners' breakthrough A-League Women triumph on penalties on Sunday. But whether she can keep hold of the 22-year-old is yet to be seen. CENTRAL COAST MARINERS STRIKE FIRST IN THE GRAND FINAL 🌴🔥👊Semi-Final hero Isabel Gomez pounces ONE MINUTE into the 2nd half! #MVCvCCM live now on 10 Bold, 10 Play & Paramount+. — Ninja A-League (@aleaguewomen) May 18, 2025 The midfielder scored the opening goal in the regular-time 1-1 draw and also converted her penalty as part of a masterful performance as Central Coast won the shootout 5-4. Gomez notched seven goals and three assists from 16 games this season, having missed 11 through her MCL injury suffered in November, days after her first Matildas call-up. She is due to head into camp later this week ahead of friendlies against Argentina. "This past week has been amazing to be selected in the Matildas as well. It's such an honour. So I'm super grateful," Gomez said. "I'll go in with a lot of confidence. I've definitely grown in that aspect. "That's thanks to Em - she's really pushed me to be a better player and step up in these moments. And, yeah, I think it's great." Veteran Victory striker Emily Gielnik, who missed out on Matildas selection, gave some timely advice. "I saw Izzy Gomez crying, and I gave her a hug and I said, 'enjoy that first cap when you wear that green and gold jersey. You deserve it. Embrace it and enjoy every minute, because you've had a hell of a season'," Gielnik said. That will only be the start, according to Husband. "She's an incredibly special player, and she's somebody that we know has incredible talent, and she's still got a lot more to give," Husband said. "I don't think she's still even quite 100 per cent yet. "I look at our season and wonder what we could have achieved if we'd have had her all season. "She's not only just an incredible player with great athletic ability and great technical ability, great decision making, she's a phenomenal person as well. "So credit to her, credit to her family, she'll have made a lot of people proud, not just tonight, but for the last two seasons, and she's been an absolute dream to coach. I couldn't ask for a better player." Gomez is contracted for next season but offers from overseas and elsewhere in the ALW are certain to come. "There's a lot of options, but still unsure where I'm headed," Gomez said. Husband is confident she can keep most of her championship-winning team together. "I think they'll bring themselves together, I really do," she said. "I look at around the changing room, how close they are as a group and how much they they back each other, and how collective they are. "I think that's more of a selling point than anything else, to be honest."

Finals-bound Wanderers thrash Bulls in comeback ALM win

Western Sydney will enter their A-League Men home elimination final in fine form after pulling off a 3-1 comeback win over local rivals Macarthur FC. Anthony Pantazopoulos's 55th-minute goal put the Wanderers ahead before substitute Marcus Antonsson sealed the deal in the 73rd minute in front of a record 9213-strong crowd at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday. Macarthur had scored the opener via a Marin Jakolis goal in the fourth minute, but their lead only lasted 17 minutes before Wanderers star Bozhidar Kraev hit the scoreboard. Western Sydney (46 points) will host Melbourne Victory in an elimination final next week after sealing a fourth-placed finish, just one point behind third-place Western United. How's this for a goal celebration 😏🙌Anthony Pantazopoulos gives @wswanderersfc the lead with a home Elimination Final on the line 👀📺 Watch #MACvWSW live NOW on Paramount+, 10 Play or 10 Bold. — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) May 3, 2025 United defeated premiers Auckland FC 4-2 earlier in the day to secure their own home final, after Melbourne City sealed second place with a 5-1 win over Sydney FC. A groin issue picked up by Alex Bonetig slightly dampened Western Sydney's win, the centre-back substituted out of the match after halftime as a precaution. Meanwhile, the Bulls (33 points) miss out on finals in eighth. It is a gut-wrenching end for Mile Sterjovski's side, having sat second on New Year's Day before a fast slide down the table following the January window departures of then-captain Valere Germain, striker Ariath Piol and winger Jed Drew. Has this sealed the deal for the Wanderers? Watch #MACvWSW Live & Free NOW on 10 Bold & 10 Play — 10 Football (@10FootballAU) May 3, 2025 An error by Wanderers goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas had helped open the door for the home side to hit the scoreboard first. Kraev had given up possession and Harrison Sawyer reacted the best, delivering a through ball to a breakaway Jakolis. Thomas read the play wrong and ran towards the edge of the penalty box, allowing Jakolis to easily slot the ball past him. Jakolis finishes the season as Macarthur's leading goalscorer with 10 to go with his 12 assists. He becomes the fourth player in the league's history to reach double figures in both goals and assists in a single season, joining Aaron Mooy, Marco Rojas and Craig Goodwin. Sawyer sent a scare through the Bulls camp after going down in the 28th minute with what looked an achilles injury after charging into the attacking third for a goalscoring opportunity, before aggravating it further following a challenge against Pantazopoulos. Sawyer was substituted at the break after seeing out the first half, replaced by Liam Rose.

Six of the best as Jet-powered Newcastle maul Mariners

The Newcastle Jets have written another miserable chapter in Central Coast's forgettable A-League Men season, smashing their bitter rivals 6-0 in the latest staging of the F3 Derby and mathematically ending their title defence. Welcoming the Mariners to McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday, the Jets were ruthless against their at-times hapless foes, taking an early lead through Aleksandar Susnjar, then piling on the goals after Storm Roux's 39th-minute red card. The defeat left Mark Jackson's side nine points outside the top six with two games remaining, ending their run of fairytale back-to-back championships at two and forcing them to watch the playoffs from home for the first time since 2019-20. What better time to score your first @NewcastleJetsFC goal than an F3 Derby? 😈🔥Aleksandar Susnjar heads home and it's first blood Newcastle against @CCMariners!Watch #NEWvCCM live NOW on Paramount+ and 10 Bold 📺 — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) April 12, 2025 Five points outside the top six with just three games to play and already having announced that coach Rob Stanton will not be returning, the Jets are also unlikely to play finals, but they secured derby bragging rights for the first time since December 2022. Clayton Taylor ran the show, the 21-year-old assisting Susnjar and Daniel Wilmering's goals and inducing Mariner skipper Trent Sainsbury to turn the ball into his own net on the stroke of halftime. He then made it 4-0 with a long-range laser in the 50th minute. Oh my, that's a SPECIAL strike 🚀😱 Clayton Taylor adds a screamer to go with THREE assists in 50 minutes! The Jets lead 4-0 and their 21-year-old young gun is running riot 🔥Watch #NEWvCCM live NOW on Paramount+ and 10 Bold 📺 — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) April 12, 2025 Kota Mizunuma set up Eli Adams for the fifth in the 73rd minute, and the youngster grabbed a second in the 92nd, ensuring the six-goal margin equalled the Jets' 8-2 win in 2018 for the heaviest in the rivalry's history. Reflective of the Mariners' evening, the red card to Roux came just eight minutes after he came on as a replacement for an injured Mikael Doka, lashing out with an elbow following a tussle with Callum Timmins. Outshot 22 to to four, the Mariners failed to force Jets keeper Ryan Scott to work all evening.

City pile misery on Mariners thanks to Memeti strike

With their A-League Men finals hopes already dashed, Central Coast have suffered more misery at the hands of Melbourne City after a 1-0 loss. It was all City at AAMI Park on Saturday as teenage sensation Medin Memeti led the way on the scoreboard with the 29th-minute match-winner at AAMI Park. The home side had bamboozled the Mariners for the opener by going short with a set piece just outside the box. Receiving the quick pass, Marco Tilio sent a slicing cross to Kai Trevin on the left flank. Trevin drew Mariners goalkeeper Dylan Peraic-Cullen off his line and toe-poked to Memeti who buried the ball himself. With four matches remaining, 10th-placed Central Coast's finals hopes are all but shot. Mark Jackson's men are on 25 points after suffering their eighth defeat of the season, eight points adrift of sixth-placed Adelaide United. Poor communication between City shot-stopper Patrick Beach and centre-back German Ferreryra almost gifted an equaliser. Beach was near the halfway line in the 52nd minute when his pass missed Ferrerya. Central Coast striker Alou Kuol took possession and launched from long-range at an unmanned goal, but his shot went wide. Mikael Doka tried to take matters into his own hands when he tried for goal from a free kick in the 85th minute, but the threat was palmed off by Beach. The Mariners, looking to build after their 3-1 defeat of Perth Glory broke an eight-match winless streak, were unlucky not to find the scoreboard first after a number of early shots at goal. Kuol had streamed downfield in the second minute to set up Christian Theoharous, but he could not add the finishing touch. Brian Kaltak's left-footed shot was blocked six minutes later before Nathan Paull's attempt went just wide of the left post. The reigning champions had struggled to break out of their own half in the second stanza with top-four side City exerting plenty of pressure. They had 12 shots on target while none of the Mariners' seven strikes hit the target.

Roar beat Glory 3-1 in ALM wooden spoon battle

Brisbane Roar have climbed off the bottom of the A-League Men table after birthday boy Samuel Klein helped them come from behind to post a 3-1 win over new wooden spoon favourites Perth Glory. Glory opened the scoring in the seventh minute of Saturday night's match at HBF Park courtesy of a goal-of-the-year contender from Luke Amos. But it was all Brisbane from that point on, with new Roar recruit Asumah Abubakar levelling the scores in the 37th minute, before a superb second-half double to Klein, on his 21st birthday, sealed the win. What a strike! 😮‍💨 21-year-old Sam Klein scored a brace on his birthday and what a way to do it. An unforgettable night for @brisbaneroar's rising star 🧡 — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) March 15, 2025 The result lifted Roar to 11 points, level with Glory, but Brisbane leapfrogged their rivals due to a far superior goal difference. And with Brisbane boasting two games in hand on Glory, plus the fact five of the Roar's remaining seven games are at home, Perth now appear destined for a second straight wooden spoon. Four of Glory's five remaining games are on the road, starting with next week's clash with Central Coast in Gosford. The performances of both Perth and Brisbane had been awful this season, but it was a goal of the highest class that opened proceedings on Saturday night. After receiving the ball back from Adam Taggart in a nice one-two manoeuvre, former Tottenham midfielder Amos let fire from 30 yards out in a shot that rocketed into the top right corner. A goal almost THREE years in the making and what a beauty it is! 👏🚀@PerthGloryFC get the early lead courtesy of a goal from English midfielder Luke Amos 💪📺 Watch #PERvBRI live NOW on Paramount+, 10 Bold or 10 Play. — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) March 15, 2025 There were plenty of heated moments for the remainder of the half as players from both sides fought tooth and nail to get the ascendancy. Roar defender Jack Hingert was shown a yellow card in the 16th minute after getting involved in a push and shove following Hosine Bility's crude foul on Taggart. Glory duo Nikola Mileusnic and Tomislav Mrcela also went into the book later on in the half. Brisbane levelled the scores in scrappy fashion in the 37th minute when new signing Asumah Abubakar found a way through Glory's defence and bundled the ball in. Klein put Brisbane ahead in the 51st minute when he rifled home an opportunistic volley to mark his maiden A-League goal. And the win was secured in the 89th minute when an unopposed Klein dribbled to the edge of the box before curling his shot in.
