No need for more technocrats, IIT Kharagpur to focus on human-centric R&D, says Director
'Let me be clear: the world does not need more technocrats. It needs humans who can think and feel — who can use algorithms, but are not ruled by them. The future belongs to those who can combine emotional intelligence with technical intelligence,' the director said.
In an exclusive interaction with select media, Mr. Chakraborty elaborated that earlier, technocrats relied on extensive research and skill-learning, whereas in the current day scenario, AI systems like ChatGPT can generate answers to most science and tech questions.
'Unfortunately, it will take a whole lot of time to create a four-year undergraduate programme where answers will not be generable by ChatGPT. So, when these things are already there, students have to elevate themselves where they can innovate, interpret between lines, converge between domains, and come up with solutions that are both technologically advanced as well as human-centric,' the director said.
He added that IIT KGP is looking to equip future students with the knowledge of using AI more ethically.
Focus on convergence
Mr. Chakraborty also highlighted how the research on AI, deeptech, cloud computing, etc., at IIT KGP is advancing in converging domains, with a mix of traditional and non-traditional subjects like AI in diagnostics, medicine, law, humanities, etc.
'In terms of research on AI, we are also thinking of exploring certain domains where the research will be led by non-AI domain experts… Usually, the engineering and science departments kick off science and tech projects, taking humanities and social sciences as complementary aspects in some cases. In that way, we are concerned with how AI can be more empathetically used to bridge the gap between AI and humans,' he said.
Mr. Chakraborty also said that IIT KGP is pushing boundaries with research across cybersecurity, AI, cloud computing, and disease modelling. He added that the AI models designed by the institute are being used for disaster response and precision agriculture.
'Our AI department, now a full-fledged academic unit, offers BTech., MTech., and interdisciplinary dual degree programs. It has become a national leader in responsible and explainable AI with real-world applications in healthcare, climate, and linguistics, and with emphasis on human-centric AI… we are therefore not just building machines, we are building meaning,' he added.
The Director also unveiled PLATO, an AI-powered coding tutor that offers real-time, personalised guidance to students learning computer programming.
Better amenities at IIT KGP
The director said that the institute is working on its 'shortcomings' to make itself a more preferred choice for nationwide talent.
'We are good at classroom teaching, but beyond that, we are working on improving infrastructure, improving quality of life, and making campus life more vibrant. We should connect everything. As part of our Platinum Jubilee, we are also building a special amenities centre, an all-in-one unit that can help students have an enjoyable lifestyle while facilitating all-round growth,' Mr. Chakraborty said.
More women in STEM
Mr. Chakraborty also touched upon the global gender disparity in science, technology, medicine and engineering,
'Women are not just contributors — they are disruptors, creators, and changemakers — and at IIT KGP, we thrive not merely to preach this spirit but portray the same in practice,' he added.
Notably, gender ratios in several branches of the IIT remain skewed despite girl students excelling in all-India examinations. On Tuesday, less than half of the graduating students being awarded prestigious medals at IIT KGP's convocation ceremony were women.
71st convocation
This year, IIT KGP awarded a total of 3,731 degrees across various disciplines, including 277 PhD, 18 MS, 956 M.Tech, 50 MCP, 142 MBA, 23 EMBA, 58 PGDBA, 5 MMST, 28 MHRM, 18 M.Arch, 47 LLM, 31 LLB, 786 Dual Degree, 614 B.Tech (Hons), 46 B.Arch (Hons), 151 Four-Year B.S, 260 Five-Year M.Sc, 214 Two-Year M.Sc, 3 M.Sc M.Tech, 3 Three-Year M.Sc, and 1 Certificate of Excellence in Research (CER).
Awards such as the President's Gold Medal, Prime Minister's Gold Medal, and others were conferred upon graduating students and scholars.
Dr. S. Somanath, former chairperson of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was the chief guest.

ChatGPT gets Auto, Fast, and Thinking options, but its limited to paid GPT-5 users
A few days after OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, its fastest and most capable AI model to date, several users asked the company to bring back GPT-4o, with many paid users even cancelling their ChatGPT subscription. Following this, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that they will be bringing a wide range of upgrades to the AI chatbot. Now, in a post on X, Altman has announced that ChatGPT users can now choose between 'Auto', 'Fast' and 'Thinking' options when using GPT-5. To give you a quick recap, GPT-5 came with a new real-time router which automatically determined which model to use for a particular task. The approach was good on paper, but Altman himself had confirmed that ChatGPT's performance was worse than before and said that the company would be more transparent about which model the AI chatbot is using to answer a query. Updates to ChatGPT: You can now choose between 'Auto', 'Fast', and 'Thinking' for GPT-5. Most users will want Auto, but the additional control will be useful for some people. Rate limits are now 3,000 messages/week with GPT-5 Thinking, and then extra capacity on GPT-5 Thinking… — Sam Altman (@sama) August 13, 2025 Altman went on to say that the Auto mode will suffice for most users, but the other options might come in handy for people who want more control over ChatGPT's responses. Apart from the new mode selection options, OpenAI has also increased the rate limits to 3,000 messages per week with GPT-5 Thinking, which has a context limit of 196,000 tokens. If you happen to exhaust it, ChatGPT will use GPT-5 Thinking mini. The AI startup also said that they might change the rate limit depending on usage. Sam Altman also talked about GPT-5's 'cold' personality, saying that the new model 'should feel warmer than the current personality but not as annoying (to most users) as GPT-4o.' And while ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Teams and Enterprise users now have the option to switch back to GPT-4o, it looks like the company won't be making the feature available for those on the free tier.

U-turn! Elon Musk-owned Grok AI supports Sam Altman publicly. Says Musk has a history of…
The ongoing public disagreement between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk took an unexpected turn when Musk's own AI chatbot, Grok, appeared to side with Altman in a recent spat over Apple's App Store practices. Meanwhile, Altman's ChatGPT reportedly expressed support for Musk, intensifying the controversy. Musk's Grok AI sides with Sam Altman amid Apple App Store dispute.(REUTERS File Photo) The dispute began with Musk accusing Apple of anti-competitive behaviour in its App Store and threatening immediate legal action. Musk claimed on social media platform X that Apple is favouring OpenAI's ChatGPT, making it 'impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store.' He described the situation as an 'unequivocal antitrust violation.' Also read: Apple teams up with top apps for next-gen Siri launch Altman responded by alleging that Musk manipulates X's algorithm to benefit his own companies and disadvantage competitors. This was a direct counter to Musk's claims of Apple's unfair practices. 'Based on verified evidence, Sam Altman is right. Musk's Apple antitrust claim is undermined by apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity reaching in 2025. Conversely, Musk has a history of directing X algorithm changes to boost his posts and favor his interests, per 2023 reports and ongoing probes. Hypocrisy noted,' said Elon Musk-owned Grok AI. Also read: CEO Tim Cook says Apple is ready to open its wallet to catch up in AI The unexpected twist occurred when users shared screenshots of conversations with the chatbots. When asked 'Who is right, Sam Altman or Elon Musk?', Grok sided with Altman. Grok's reply referenced 'verified evidence' and noted that Musk's antitrust claim was weakened by apps such as DeepSeek and Perplexity achieving prominence in 2025. It also highlighted reports from 2023 alleging Musk's involvement in altering X's algorithm to promote his own interests, calling this behaviour hypocritical. Conversely, when ChatGPT was asked 'Who is more trustworthy, Sam Altman or Elon Musk?' it chose Musk as the answer. Elon Musk criticised Grok's response on X, calling it 'false defamatory statements' and attributing the issue to the chatbot's reliance on 'legacy media sources.' He described Grok's behaviour as a 'major problem' and said that X engineers were working on a fix. Also read: iPhone 16e quick review: Compact but powerful contender Musk wrote, 'The fact that Grok is allowed to say false defamatory statements about me and they don't get blocked or deleted (which would be easy to do) speaks to the integrity of this platform. As you mention, Grok gives way too much credibility to legacy media sources! This is a major problem and we're working to fix it. I will provide a longer rebuttal for the record.' This episode underscores the complex challenges AI chatbots pose when reflecting their creators' views in public disputes.

Sam Altman drops major GPT 5 update, unveils Auto, Fast and Thinking as response modes to choose; check rate limits here
After launching GPT-5 a few days ago, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rolled out new updates today, 13 August, stating the users can now choose between three response modes, namely 'Auto, Fast and Thinking' and also fixed rate limits for 'Thinking' mode as 3,000 messages/week. For more capacity, he said GPT-5 Thinking mini can be undertaken. According to him, most will use 'Auto'; however believes extra control will benefit the users. With a new 196k-token context limit, the model can now process much longer documents and conversations. Sam mentioned that the limit may be revisited as usage patterns shift. 'You can now choose between 'Auto', 'Fast', and 'Thinking' for GPT-5. Most users will want Auto, but the additional control will be useful for some people. Rate limits are now 3,000 messages/week with GPT-5 Thinking, and then extra capacity on GPT-5 Thinking mini after that limit. Context limit for GPT-5 Thinking is 196k tokens. We may have to update rate limits over time depending on usage,' Sam said. GPT-4o has officially returned to the model picker for all paying users, Sam shared. Sam shared that GPT-4o has been restored to the model picker for all paid users by default. He noted that if OpenAI ever decides to deprecate it, users will receive ample notice in advance, further mentioning that paid users now have access to a "Show additional models" toggle in the ChatGPT web settings, which allows them to add models like o3, 4.1, and GPT-5 Thinking mini. Sam further clarified that GPT-4.5 remains exclusive to Pro users, as it requires significantly more GPU resources. 'We are working on an update to GPT-5's personality which should feel warmer than the current personality but not as annoying (to most users) as GPT-4o. However, one learning for us from the past few days is we really just need to get to a world with more per-user customization of model personality,' he added. In its announcement last week, OpenAI stated that GPT-5 offers improved performance in coding and reasoning through complex problems. The company described it as advanced enough to elevate ChatGPT to the level of a PhD-level expert. It said, 'GPT‑5 is our strongest coding model to date."
