Young chef transports food via wheelbarrow to quell hunger in his community
A 23-year-old passionate professional young chef is using his culinary talents to feed the homeless, underprivileged school learners and elderly people from his community this winter.
Born and bred in Ekangala in the far east of Pretoria, Kamogelo Kgotso Baloyi has always understood the need for a warm meal as he was raised by his grandmother, who worked as a domestic worker.
His culinary journey is rooted in his upbringing and faith.
'Growing up in the church has shaped my values, as I drew more inspiration from our church's initiative called Tau Project. Through the project, the church would reach out to communities and give back food parcels, build houses, donate school uniforms and stationery, said Baloyi.
He said the initiative inspired him to show God's love through sharing.
Baloyi's soup drive feeds over 100 people.
The beneficiaries receive a cup of soup and two slices of bread.
He said this good deed was born out of his childhood experiences and the desire to give.
'The motivation behind the soup drive is that during my childhood, we used to get food from the feeding scheme at school.
'A lot of learners were getting fed through that programme,' he said.
One day, he decided he wanted to do the same for other people.
Despite challenges like transportation and limited resources, Baloyi's eager vision to make a difference within his community, motivated by his belief and the support from his family, panned out to a resounding success.
He said his sisters and grandmother would often help with the cooking and packaging of bread.
'At the moment, I am doing everything from my grandmother's house. I am using her stove, electricity and water, including storage for food donations.'
Baloyi said they chose a neutral place where the community would be able to get to without struggling.
'We currently do not have a car, so I use a wheelbarrow to transport all the things we need. We run the initiative from our own pockets and the donations we get from individuals and businesses,' he explained.
He also emphasised the support they receive from his community, as they embrace the golden idea to help end hunger.
'The community of Ekangala were actually in disbelief that there are actually such blessed people out there who still have humanity within them.'
He said their positive remarks are what pushed him to continue with the initiative, as some said it was their first and probably last meal for the day.
He encouraged people who aspire to become like him that no amount is too little or too much for them to bless the next person.
''Motho ke motho ka batho' (a person is a person because of other people) is a commonly used phrase that motivates me to keep doing what I'm doing unto others, and in that way, I also get blessings from God,' Baloyi said.
He said that he plans to grow the initiative from what it is into something bigger, like the well-known NGO Gift of the Givers.
'I am also looking forward to having my own restaurants and employing the people in my community since the unemployment rate is extremely high.'
Baloyi said they are currently seeking cooking equipment and donations to feed more people.

Cape Town fire displaces hundreds as severe weather approaches

Image: Supplied / Gift of the Givers As severe weather settled over Cape Town, a devastating fire in Silvertown, Khayelitsha, left over 140 people displaced and destroyed 45 structures in the early hours of Saturday morning. Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell confirmed the fire broke out late Friday night, with city officials conducting assessments the following morning. 'Following an assessment by Disaster Risk Management officials this morning, it was determined that 45 structures were destroyed, impacting 145 individuals,' she said. City departments have been mobilised to clear debris and restore damaged municipal infrastructure. Humanitarian assistance is being provided by The Salvation Army and Gift of the Givers, while the names of affected residents have been submitted to SASSA and the National Department of Human Settlements for additional support. Ward councillor Thando Pimpi said the community suspects a candle may have caused the fire. 'Some residents didn't have electricity and had to use candles. Gift of the Givers project coordinator Ali Sablay said their teams remain on standby as more severe weather is forecast for the weekend. Local church blesses city with massive outreach
Hundreds of people from across the city were blessed with heart-warming donations as a local church displayed community spirit and unwavering faith through massive outreach. Driven by their aim to make a lasting difference in the city, members of the Doxa Deo Wonderboom church donated food and clothes to over 850 people during their annual street store drive in Pretoria North on May 31. Outreach organiser Yolanda Pelzer said the aim was to provide people with clothes for the winter ahead, blankets, a warm cup of soup, bread and a pack of vegetables to take home as well as prayer. 'This year's street store had over 12 tons of clothing distributed to people who are not so fortunate to be able to buy their own clothes this winter. 'We were able to give people the opportunity to walk through the street store themselves, and each person was able to take an average of 15 items home for the day.' Pelzer said Doxa Deo believes people should be treated with dignity, and needy people often cannot choose what they want, but have to take what they get. 'Through the street store, people could not only take something home for free, but also take home something they chose themselves and loved.' She said they also served over 350 litres of soup, 250 loaves of bread, as well as 1 400 water bags and 200 packets of sweets during the outreach. 'We also had a special area for the children, and each child was spoiled with a face paint of their choice as well as a packet of sweets,' she said. She said the church aims to make a difference in the city by equipping people through various processes to know God, love others, and make a positive impact in their lives. Lisa Weitz (33) from Onderstepoort shared how grateful she was to receive clothes and food for her seven children completely free of charge. 'We feel blessed to have been given the vegetables and clothes without hesitation, and from people who didn't even know us personally. Most of the stuff we received, we really needed but couldn't afford, so it's going to help a lot.' Church member Helena Pretorius (54) shared how honoured she felt to have been there for people who really needed it. 'It was really heart-warming to see joy on the children's faces as we gave them sweets and painted their faces. It always makes them feel special.' She believes God works with people's hearts and puts love in one's heart so they pour it out where it's needed. 'It feels great to share your love with other people. We didn't know them and their struggles, but just making their days better felt amazing,' she said. Reinhardt Smit, lead pastor at Doxa Deo Wonderboom, shared that the street store was extremely successful and that the church plans to launch several outreach projects next year that will focus on making a lasting impact and change in our city.
