Oman hails 'historic' France recognition of Palestinian state
The Sultanate of Oman has commended and welcomed the historic announcement by the French President regarding his country's intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to an official statement from the Foreign Ministry. Oman called upon the remaining countries that have not yet recognized the Palestinian state to follow suit, in fulfillment of the two-state solution and in affirmation of the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Al Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital. Saudi Arabia on Friday welcomed President Emmanuel Macron's announcement that France would recognise the state of Palestine, and urged other countries to follow suit. Other European Union members have recognised Palestine since the Gaza war erupted in October 2023 but France is the first member of the G7 group of major advanced economies to do so. The Saudi foreign ministry said "the kingdom commends this historic decision, which reaffirms the international community's consensus on the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and to establish their independent state".It called on other countries "that have not yet recognised the State of Palestine to take similar positive steps". Macron said on Thursday that France would formally recognise a Palestinian state during a United Nations meeting in September. Qatar also welcomed the French move. Its foreign ministry said the move "constitutes significant support for the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people" and "contributes to advancing prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region". The Kuwaiti foreign ministry said it "commended this significant step".

Marriage support fund to be launched in Oman in June
By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – Following a directive issued by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, a marriage support fund will be launched in all governorates before the end of June. The announcement was made during the first governors' meeting convened this year, chaired by Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi, Minister of Interior, on Sunday. Busaidi underscored the importance of aligning local development plans with His Majesty the Sultan's vision to empower governorates and strengthen community participation in driving progress of wilayats. One of the main items discussed was implementation of a marriage support fund. Governors have been instructed to take the necessary executive measures to activate the Royal Directive, which will be implemented according to specific standards to be outlined by Ministry of Interior. The initiative stems from a Royal Directive issued in January to establish the marriage support fund allocating RO1mn to each of the sultanate's 11 governorates. These funds aim to provide financial assistance to citizens intending to marry. Details of application process and eligibility criteria will be announced by relevant authorities soon. The meeting also addressed several common issues affecting the governorates and reviewed progress on implementation of municipal council recommendations.
