Uttarkashi Flood Survivors Protest Against Rs 5000 Relief Cheques, Call Amount 'Too Less'
Uttarkashi has been battered by flash floods, which caused severe loss of lives and properties in the area.
The flash floods in Uttarkashi have left many locals homeless, sweeping away people, houses, and entire families. Adding to their distress was the issuance of Rs 5,000 cheques as 'immediate relief" on Friday—an amount many felt was grossly inadequate given the scale of the tragedy.
According to a report by The Times Of India, several people refused to accept it and called it an 'insult" to their 'suffering".
'We have lost everything: our families, homes, businesses worth crores. This amount is an insult," one villager was quoted as saying.
The area has no electricity, and they received candles four days after the disaster battered the place.
'We spent those nights in darkness. Used firewood to heat food. Govt talks about ration, but that, too, has not reached us. We had to go door to door looking for it," one of the villagers said.
This also sparked a protest as Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced Rs 5 lakh compensation.
Speaking to ANI on Saturday, CM Dhami asserted, 'More than 1000 people have been rescued. All the devotees and pilgrims from all across the country, who were stuck there, have been rescued… All the injured people have been shifted to hospitals. Connectivity was completely destroyed in Harsil. It was restored there yesterday. A Bailey bridge will be installed by evening near Lachi Gad, which will help reconstruct roads till Harsil."
He added, 'We have decided to provide affected families with rations for the next six months… A three-member committee is being formed under the chairmanship of the Revenue Secretary… They will see how the affected family can be rehabilitated and the extent of the loss incurred… We will also provide a relief package to those in need."
Earlier on Saturday, CM Dhami met the state Governor, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Gurmit Singh at Raj Bhavan in Dehradun to take stock of the situation.
In a post on X, Dhami wrote, 'I met the Honourable Governor @LtGenGurmit (Retd.) at Raj Bhavan. During this, we discussed the ongoing disaster relief operations in Dhrali and Harsil and the rehabilitation of the affected people."

Students should contribute to development of their alma mater
Kurnool: District Collector P Ranjith Basha has urged students to contribute to the development of the schools where they studied, regardless of where they settle in future. He made these remarks on Sunday during a visit to AP Residential School at Kalva Bugga in Orvakal mandal. Addressing the gathering, the Collector recalled his own association with the institution, noting that he sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for the construction of a compound wall for the school when he served as Panchayat Raj Director. He also approved Rs 15 lakh for the construction of internal roads and Rs 33 lakh for a playground at Silver Jubilee College. Under the PM SHRI scheme, Rs 14 crore has been sanctioned for the development of government schools in the district, with works worth Rs 12 crore already completed. Social welfare hostels have been sanctioned Rs 8 crore for repairs, 90% of which are finished. Similarly, Rs.1 crore from MPLADS and ₹50 lakh from the DMF fund were allotted for repairs to BC welfare hostels, and Rs 30 lakh was approved for playground levelling. The Collector further announced that as part of the initiative to install solar roofs in all government offices, the first such facility in the district would be set up at AP Residential School at a cost of Rs 26 lakh. He informed that a cricket stadium would be established at Jagannathagattu under the aegis of Greenko Company. He also assured arrangements for a hall at the Government General Hospital for attendants of patients. He added that the process of adopting 'Bangaru Kutumbalu' families identified under the P4 policy is nearing completion. Repairs and internal road works are also being taken up at Banavasi AP Residential School. Earlier, Collector Ranjith interacted with his former classmates and teachers, reminiscing about his student days. He later presented appreciation certificates and incentive awards to students, who had excelled in various fields. District Education Officer Samuel Paul and other officials participated in the programme.

Indian naval ship INS Rana arrives in Sri Lankas port city of Trincomalee
Colombo, Aug 11 (PTI) The Sri Lankan Navy on Monday welcomed the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Rana, which arrived in the north-eastern port city of Trincomalee with 300 crew members on board for a four-day official visit. INS Rana is a 147-metre-long destroyer. It is commandeered by Captain KP Sreesan, the Lankan Navy said in a statement. During the ship's stay in Sri Lanka, the crew will engage in several training programmes and sporting events arranged by the Sri Lanka Navy, aimed at strengthening cooperation and fostering goodwill between the two navies, it said. 'The itinerary also includes sightseeing tours across the country. In addition, the visiting ship will conduct a yoga session and host a training visit for Lanka Navy personnel onboard, while the Sri Lanka Navy will execute simulation exercises at the Special Boat Squadron Headquarters for the ship's crew," the statement said. Mizoram: 1,900 refugees from Myanmar, Bdesh registered in biometric enrollment
Aizawl, Aug 11 (PTI) More than 1,900 refugees staying in Mizoram have been enrolled in the ongoing exercise of biometric enrollment for people from Myanmar and Bangladesh, an official said on Monday. He said that the biometric enrollment for over 32,000 Myanmar nationals who have taken shelter across 11 districts of the state and nearly 3,000 Bangladeshis from Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) began in a few districts on July 28, followed by most other districts on July 30 and 31. The exercise is progressing at a slow pace due to technical issues and poor internet connectivity in remote areas, he said. As of Friday, district administrations have captured the biometric and demographic details of 1,947 refugees across 11 districts, according to the official. Although collecting biometric and biographic data of refugees who are staying in relief camps is easier, district officials faced inconvenience for children who study in Aizawl or outside the district where their parents currently took shelter, he said. He said that the enrollment exercise could also not be expedited for those refugees who live outside relief camps, especially in rented houses and those living with relatives or friends. According to the state home department, a total of 32,504 Myanmar refugees are presently taking shelter across all the 11 districts of Mizoram with Champhai district hosting the highest at 13,586. The number, however, keeps changing almost every day as some refugees have the habit of going to their country and coming back to Mizoram repeatedly, officials said. Although Champhai district, which has hosted the highest number of Myanmar refugees, began the enrollment exercise on July 31, only seven have been enrolled so far due to technical glitches with the electronic devices, they said. The district administration has collected new devices from Aizawl on Saturday, and the exercise is expected to run smoothly from this week, they said. Additionally, more than 2,000 Bangladeshi refugees also took shelter in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, 266 others in Serchhip and 63 in Lunglei districts, the home department said. The Myanmar nationals, mostly from Chin state, fled to Mizoram following a military coup in the neighbouring country in February 2021, while the asylum seekers from Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts came to the state after a military offensive against an ethnic insurgent group in 2022. The Chins in Myanmar and the Bawm tribe of Bangladesh share close ethnic ties with the Mizos.
