Zahid calls for fresh approach to combat drug abuse amid worrying rise in synthetic drugs
He said that a change in strategy was crucial because the current trend of drug abuse is very worrying, with an increase in the use of synthetic drugs and new distribution methods through social media platforms.
'The government has spent over RM50 billion on prevention, enforcement, and treatment, but the effect is that drug abuse is still on the rise. We must admit this failure... let's set aside our differences to ensure that even if the country cannot be 100 percent free of drug abuse, it is not impossible for us to reduce it to the bare minimum,' he said.
He made these remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 46th general assembly of the Malaysian Anti-Drug Association (Pemadam) last night.
Ahmad Zahid also expressed concern that a report by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) found that 68 percent of all drug abusers are young people aged between 19 and 39, including professionals.
'In the long run, this will reduce productivity, not to mention the country's assets... this young workforce is needed to contribute to all sectors in this country,' he said.
He recommended that relevant enforcement agencies and Pemadam adopt an approach of increasing two-way communication with the target group to reduce this phenomenon.
'It's not just about giving lectures but becoming listeners who understand. Not just educating, but also immersing ourselves in the emotions of young people. We can't just rely on old approaches through lectures and distributing brochures. We must use a communication approach through digital technology,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid also suggested that Pemadam create a digital communication team in every state, and empower training and advocacy modules for volunteers.
In addition, he put forward the idea that an integrated information portal and a smart application should be developed, along with strengthening strategic cooperation with influencers and social media communities. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : Pakatan Harapan (PH) MP Syahredzan Johan has questioned whether a suit filed by lawyer P Waytha Moorthy against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is linked to Waytha's recent meeting with Bersatu leaders. Earlier today, FMT reported that Waytha had filed a suit seeking a declaration that Anwar should not have been elected as Tambun MP in November 2022 and appointed prime minister. In a Facebook post, Bangi MP Syahredzan said that while anyone has the right to file court proceedings, he felt the suit against Anwar was 'frivolous and vexatious' as the latter has been prime minister for close to three years. He also noted that Waytha had even previously hailed Anwar, the Pakatan Harapan chairman, as the best man to head the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra). 'Is this not acknowledgement that Anwar is legally the prime minister? 'Anwar has been the Tambun MP for 996 days. (But) Waytha only wants to disqualify Anwar (now)? 'Is it a coincidence that Waytha met Bersatu leaders last month, and today we are told about this suit against Anwar?' said Syahredzan. Malaysian Advancement Party president Waytha was among the leaders from political parties outside the government bloc who met Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to discuss the formation of a united opposition front. In his Facebook post, Syahredzan also pointed out that Waytha, who was a minister in Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Cabinet from 2018 to 2020, did not object when Anwar contested and won a 2018 by-election for the Port Dickson parliamentary seat. 'Waytha did not have a problem with it at the time,' added Syahredzan, who is a lawyer by training. 'He did not file any suit to disqualify Anwar then, even until Parliament was dissolved in 2022.'

Malaysia-led team investigating transparency of Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire
GEMAS: The Malaysia-led Interim Observer Team (IOT) plays a key role in investigating the transparency of the ceasefire along the Thailand-Cambodia border, said armed forces chief Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar. "We have received reports from both countries of several ceasefire violations. "The team on the ground will investigate these main aim is to ensure that the ceasefire is implemented transparently and runs smoothly. "We have also requested Thailand and Cambodia to liaise with the Joint Action Group from both countries, including the legal section and others," he told reporters after witnessing the 2025 Firepower Training at Syed Sirajuddin Camp here today. Also present were Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari and Chief of Army Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to strictly observe a ceasefire along their shared border, with both sides maintaining current troop positions while also refraining from any further reinforcements. According to the Agreed Minutes of the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting issued after the Extraordinary GBC Meeting on Aug 7, both sides must avoid unprovoked firing towards the other side's positions or troops, which may escalate tensions. Meanwhile, Mohd Nizam said the IOT is currently holding meetings with Thailand and Cambodia at least twice a week to monitor and report on the latest developments in the area concerned. Asean urban growth must balance prosperity with equity
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean must ensure that the prosperity generated by rapid urbanisation is shared equitably among all communities and not achieved at the expense of the vulnerable, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said urban areas in Asean are already home to over 370 million people, contributing 70 per cent of the region's gross domestic product (GDP) and powering a US$3.8 trillion economy in 2024 and by 2050, seven in 10 Asean citizens are projected to live in cities, making urban centres critical drivers of regional growth. "However, prosperity is not evenly shared. "We still see gleaming skyscrapers casting shadows over informal settlements, and infrastructure stretched beyond capacity. "As Asean moves towards becoming the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030, we must ensure urbanisation delivers not only growth, but fairness and opportunity for all," he said in his keynote address at the opening of the 2025 Asean Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF), Asean Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF) and the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of Asean Capitals (MGMAC) here today. Also present were Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif and Asean Deputy Secretary-General for Community and Corporate Affairs Nararya Sanggramawijaya Soeprapto. On sustainability, Fadillah said it was "not optional" but essential for survival, noting threats such as rising sea levels in Vietnam's Mekong Delta and intensifying heatwaves across the region. Praising proven Asean innovations in finding climate crisis solutions, Fadillah said Singapore's green building standards and Indonesia's renewable energy transition to Bandung's digital governance and Brunei's smart water management are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and respecting Asean's diversity. Fadillah also stressed the role of mayors and local governments as "frontline architects" of Asean's transformation, urging that they be central to regional decision-making and equipped with advanced tools such as AI-powered urban planning, systematic knowledge-sharing and stronger cross-border networks. "Your leadership will determine whether our cities become models of equity and environmental harmony, or cautionary tales of unchecked growth. "Let us seize this moment to build partnerships, inspire bold policies and create a legacy of thriving, liveable communities for generations to come," he said.
