Mohamed Salah calls out Uefa tribute to Palestinian footballer ‘killed in Israeli aid attack'

Uefa declined to comment when approached for a response.
Salah was criticised shortly after the start of the war for not speaking out in support of Palestinians. Nearly two weeks after the conflict first erupted, the Egypt national team captain posted a video on social media in which he said: 'It is not always easy to speak in a time like this. There has been too much violence and too much heartbreak and brutality.
'The escalations in recent weeks is unbearable to witness. All lives are sacred and must be protected. The massacres need to stop, families are being torn apart.'
Salah, who has contributed large financial donations towards the aid effort in Gaza, also called for 'world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls'.
With Gaza in the throes of a hunger crisis, the UN rights office said last month that Israeli forces had killed more than 1,300 Palestinians trying to get food aid in the territory since late May.
An ex-player of the Khadamat Al-Shati club in Gaza, Obeid played 24 international matches for Palestine, the PFA said.
The midfielder also played for the Al-Amari Youth Center Club in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
While living there in 2010, Obeid was among six players on the national team from Gaza who were turned back at the Jordanian border for 'security reasons' on their way to a friendly in Mauritania.
An Israeli security official said at the time that the players had failed to renew special permits allowing them to play in the West Bank.
'When I heard that we would be forbidden from travelling I was very upset, because any athlete dreams of wearing his national jersey in international forums,' Obeid told AFP in 2010.
'We want to be able to travel freely with our families, just like athletes anywhere else in the world.'
Israel had previously allowed the six players to travel with the team.
Born in Gaza City, Obeid was married and is survived by his wife and five children.
Since the start of the Gaza war, triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, according to the PFA.
Israel's offensive has killed at least 61,258 in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
The 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin makes Europa League play-off homegrown player admission

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin admits he could go into the Europa League play-offs without Uefa's required quota of homegrown players. The Dons face Romanian club FCSB in the play-offs with the first leg at Pittodrie on Thursday. The hom grown rule states a squad competing in Uefa competition must include a minimum of eight 'locally trained' players in their 25-man squad list. Uefa's criteria is split into two sub-categories: club-trained and association-trained, with clubs required to have four of each. The club-trained players must have been at a club for at least three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21. Association-trained players must have been at another Scottish club for the same period – three years from 15 to 21. At present, Aberdeen have one club-trained player in Jack Milne, with two association-trained in captain Graeme Shinnie and Nicky Devlin. Uefa rules dictate if a club have fewer than eight players in both sub-categories, the overall squad limit of 25 must be reduced accordingly. That could lead to Thelin being forced to leave out some experienced players for the clash against FCSB. The deadline to register players for the Europa League play-offs is 11pm on Friday (August 15). However, there is scope to add a further two new signings by 11pm on the day before the play-off first leg. Aberdeen have agreed a deal to sign striker Marko Lazetic from Italian giants AC Milan, but the process has been delayed due to VISA red tape. Asked if he will not be able to meet the Scottish homegrown criteria for the Europa League play-off, Thelin said: 'Right now it is (not going to be possible). 'We have one squad for the play-offs, and then for the group stage, we can change. 'So let's see what happens within the squad by the last deadline day. 'Will I have to leave some of our experienced players out? It depends -we will see how it goes with the injuries. 'It is all about that now. 'Right now, when everyone is healthy, we'll have to see what happens with movement in and out and the squad, when we are done. 'The play-off is quite close. 'We can still make changes until 24 hours before the first game, so things could still happen.' Aberdeen have agreed a free transfer for AC Milan's Serbian under-21 international Lazetic. The 21-year-old has a year left on his contract, but the Italian giants are willing to let him exit for nothing, but with a 20% sell-on clause. AC Milan initially wanted a 50% sell-on, but the Dons negotiated them down. Lazetic is poised to arrive in Aberdeen, but it has been delayed due to VISA red tape. Thelin said: 'We know the situation, that's the way it is. 'I never feel frustrated, I accept the rules. 'If things happen, they happen. 'You have to be optimistic, positive and look at the players you have, not what you don't have.' Aberdeen boss Thelin completed an eighth signing of the summer transfer window, securing winger Kenan Bilalović on a five-year contract from IFK Värnamo. The Reds splashed out a fee understood to be £550,000 for the Swedish youth international. Bilalovic will not be available for the Premier Sports Cup second round clash away to Greenock Morton on Saturday as his work permit has yet to be processed. Thelin said: 'We are working always on two parts to create value for our squad, inside our squad and Kenan is a potential player. 'It is a long contract and he will grow in our environment, so he needs some time. 'However, he has a good trait for what we need in the characteristics of the player, with his speed, technique and his directness of the game. 'Of course, he needs some time to adapt, but we have a strong belief in him for the future. 'Kenan is waiting for his VISA, so he is not available yet.' Defenders Mats Knoester, Kristers Tobers and summer signing Emmanuel Gyamfi are all ruled out of the trip to Morton due to injury. Aberdeen's clash at Morton is the first cup match since winning the Scottish Cup with a penalty shoot-out triumph against Celtic at Hampden in May. Thelin will not underestimate the threat of the Championship side. He said: 'You always have to be humble and professional when you go into this game. 'Of course, the pressure is on us, but we have to be our best, always. 'It doesn't matter in which cup or in the league. 'Everybody in Aberdeen knows that, so it's no change for us. 'We're going to prepare this game like everything else.'

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah names surprising favourites to win Premier League

Mohamed Salah has surprisingly suggested that Liverpool are not the favourites to win the Premier League this season. Salah scored a remarkable 29 goals in the league last campaign to help fire the Reds to their 20th league title in Arne Slot's first season in charge. Over the summer, Liverpool have not rested on their laurels, either, spending nearly £300million on summer signings, including breaking the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz. Despite that, the Reds will not be short of rivals again this season, with Manchester City and Arsenal expected to prove stern challenges for the title. And Salah reckons that Arsenal should be considered favourites to finally get over the line this season, having finished second in the last three seasons. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. 'I think you (Arsenal) have a great team this season as you did last season,' Salah replied when asked about the Gunners' title hopes at Tuesday's PFA Awards. 'So, you have really good chance. I think you are the favourite now because you players who have been together for five years. 'I can't say I'll wish you luck – hopefully we do it again.' Asked about his performances last season, which saw him scoop the PFA's men's player of the year award, Salah added: 'I'm just getting old and I think I can handle the pressure more now. 'I think last season was incredible – the best of my career and I'm glad it went so well. Winning the Premier League with Liverpool and having that impact in the team was just incredible.' Arsenal, meanwhile, got their campaign underway with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. And despite not looking at their best to kickstart the season, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville still believes that Mikel Arteta's side should narrowly be considered favourites for the title this year. More Trending 'I couldn't separate Arsenal, Liverpool and City and I think they are all in with an equal chance so I've got no certainty that Arsenal are going to win it,' Neville said. 'But they've been consistent over the last three years and I do feel they will get there at some point. They are reliable and solid and they're consistent, which I think is important. 'I think they've got the right materials, they are just going to have to sort that forward bit of the pitch out and I think Gyokeres will.' Liverpool face a visit to St James' Park to take on Newcastle United next weekend, while Arsenal host Leeds United at the Emirates. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Mo Salah wins PFA Player of the Year as Nottingham Forest show up Man Utd and Man City at awards

This was a bitter night for Man Utd and Man City SAL OF FAME Mo Salah wins PFA Player of the Year as Nottingham Forest show up Man Utd and Man City at awards MANCHESTER was the location for this year's PFA awards — although there was a noticeable lack of representation from the two local clubs. It was the third time this glittering bash — previously staged in London — has been held in the north-west city. 6 Mo salah has won the Player of the Year award for the third time Credit: PA 6 Spanish star Mariona Caldentey was overall women's winner Credit: PA Advertisement And incredibly, for the third time in succession, there was not a single Manchester United player in the men's Premier League PFA team of the year. It sums up what a mess it has been at Old Trafford recently. You have to go back to 2022 for the last United player to feature in the line-up and, even then, it was left to Cristiano Ronaldo to fly the flag for the club. There were also no players in the team of the season from Manchester City, illustrating what a disappointing year it was for Pep Guardiola. Yet if the opening day of the season is anything to go by, City's players could be in the conversation for awards at the end of this campaign. Advertisement And despite Sunday's 1-0 loss to Arsenal, there were still some hugely encouraging signs at Old Trafford for United supporters. Maybe Benjamin Sesko will take English football by storm too, having arrived from RB Leipzig. What seems certain is the PFA team of the year in 12 months' time will not include a United keeper - unless they sign a new No 1, which looks unlikely. Frustratingly for supporters of both City and United, it was Liverpool's players who arrived in Manchester to bask in the glory of being at the very top of their profession. Unsurprisingly, Liverpool had skipper Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Salah in the team of the year. Advertisement Cheeky Mo Salah reveals Liverpool's Premier League title felt way better without Klopp, Mane and Firmino Salah, 33, had 29 top-flight goals and a career-best 18 assists as he claimed his fourth golden boot and second Premier League title for the Reds. Also in the top XI — as voted for by fellow Premier League players — was Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez who is now at Anfield. One person desperate to head to Merseyside, too, is Alexander Isak — and he featured in the dream team after a terrific season on Tyneside. For Nottingham Forest to have keeper Matz Sels and forward Chris Wood selected was a reminder of what a stunning campaign they enjoyed. Arsenal, who again finished second, saw William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice picked. It was no surprise none of Arsenal's forwards made the final XI, though. Maybe, Viktor Gyokeres could feature next time, yet he will have to do better than in Sunday's 1-0 win. With the closing date for the PFA awards now June 8 — rather than mid-March — members are able to give a much better, balanced vote. The previous event in London was a sit-down dinner often in April, so it did not reflect the entire season. After taking over as PFA chief exec, Maheta Molango scrapped the boozy dinner and replaced it with this 90-minute show in a theatre. Advertisement Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers was young player of the year, while Burnley's James Trafford — who has returned to City — was Championship player of the year following 29 clean sheets. Unbelievably, he conceded just 16 goals in his 45 games. The evening also saw Gareth Southgate and Emma Hayes pick up special PFA merit awards.
