Residents in Gauteng must expect load reduction as Eskom-serviced areas continue to face scheduled power cuts.
According to Eskom, load reduction will be carried out from Tuesday to Sunday.
Consumers can expect approximately six and five hours of outages, with varying time slots for different areas.
Areas affected
Load reduction will be implemented during peak demand periods from 5am to 9am and 5pm to 10pm.
'The continued pressure on our transformers/mini-substations due to illegal connections and electricity theft in some areas necessitates load reduction to avoid equipment damage,' said Eskom.
Areas experiencing morning load reduction (5am-9am) include Rabie Ridge, Protea Glen and its extensions, Ivory Park, Kaalfontein and Duduza .
Other affected areas include Katlehong Heights, Sebokeng extensions, and various settlements across Gauteng.
Evening load reduction (5pm-10pm) impacts regions including Vereeniging, Sharpville, Sebokend and its extensions, Westside Park, and Daveyton.

Eskom schedules nine-hour power outage in parts of Gauteng
Due to planned maintenance, Eskom has scheduled a nine-hour power outage in parts of Gauteng. The maintenance is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 August, from 8:00 to 16:00. Eskom said there will be an electricity supply disruption in Vosloorus, Boksburg due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network. 'The power outage will affect customers in Vosloorus on Tuesday, 12 August, from 8:00 – :00. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,' the power utility said. Similarly, Eskom has scheduled another nine-hour power outage in Zonkezizwe, Katlehong, in Gauteng. The power utility said the planned power cut will affect customers in Zonkezizwe extension 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 on Friday, 15 August, from 8:30 to 16:00. 'Eskom in Gauteng conducts planned maintenance on the distribution electricity network across the province as part of its maintenance plan. It is essential for maintenance to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply,' Eskom added. In the interest of safety, Eskom said customers should treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the power outage. According to Eskom, the ongoing pressure on transformers and mini-substations due to illegal connections and electricity theft in certain areas necessitates this load reduction to prevent equipment damage. It's important to note that there is a difference between load shedding and load reduction—terms that are frequently used interchangeably. While both result in temporary power cuts, they serve distinct purposes and are triggered by different circumstances. In a statement released by Eskom on August 1, the power system was reported to remain stable, with over half of its coal-fired power stations performing at an Energy Availability Factor (EAF) of 70% and above. Notably, there has been no load shedding since May 15, 2025. This indicates Eskom's efforts to stabilise the grid; however, the need for measures like load reduction persists in specific areas. Common causes include high electricity demand (especially during extreme weather), fuel supply issues (like disruptions to coal), damage to power stations, and insufficient overall power generation capacity due to ageing infrastructure and lack of investment. It is also used to combat localised issues such as electricity theft and non-payment. Load reduction is primarily caused by overloaded networks at the distribution level. This often stems from electricity theft (illegal connections, meter bypassing), unpaid electricity bills, and ageing or poorly managed infrastructure in specific areas. It's worth noting that load reduction only impacts areas with high usagetypically specific neighbourhoods. It automatically cuts off power to both paying and non-paying consumers in the overloaded network. It is implemented as a last resort to protect the network. Load shedding has been suspended but areas in Cape Town will still have planned outages. Here's who will be affected Although Eskom has suspended load shedding across the country, the Western Cape residents can expect load reduction to continue this week. According to Eskom, load reduction is carried out from Monday to Sunday. 'Illegal connections and electricity theft burdens transformer load. While loadshedding remains suspended, Eskom implements load reduction. 'The continued pressure on our transformers/mini-substations due to illegal connections and electricity theft in some areas necessitates load reduction to avoid equipment damage,' said Eskom. Areas affected Cape Town residents can look forward to two hours of power cuts, with varying time slots for different block areas. Phillippi East will have outages between 5am to 7am, while Crossroads will have load reduction twice in a day, during the morning and also at the 5pm until 7pm daily. Other areas that will have outages during both periods include Klipfontein and Mfuleni Morning load reduction (5am-7am) impacts Block A areas with the evening schedule (5pm-7pm) affecting the Block B areas.
