Despite tourism billions, Sabah villages stuck with dilapidated bridges, says Kota Belud Umno chief
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah may be raking in billions from tourism, but some visitors' hotspots in community villages are still relying on old, dilapidated wooden bridges, says Azuwan Marjan Norjan (pic).
The Kota Belud Umno chief noted that the state recorded RM2.13bil in tourism revenue between January and March this year alone, with nearly a million visitor arrivals in the first quarter, including over 150,000 from China.
'This is supposedly proof that the state's tourism industry is on solid ground. However, some community-based tourism villages continue to be left behind with poor basic infrastructure,' he said.
Azuwan pointed out that several community tourism spots still rely on old, narrow wooden bridges for access by both villagers and visitors.
'There are places where people are forced to walk in because tour buses cannot enter due to the bridge's size and its severely deteriorated condition,' he said.
Ironically, he noted, these very places are frequently featured in state tourism campaigns.
'If Sabah can earn billions from timber and billions more from tourism in just three months, is it so difficult to provide a safe concrete bridge? Is it too much to fix access roads to these growing community destinations?' he asked.
Azuwan stressed that the people are not asking for multi-million ringgit investments.
'They are only asking for safe and usable access routes for visitors. This is not about politics. It is about dignity and fairness for communities who are also contributing to the state's revenue,' he added.
Azuwan added that if Sabah is to be promoted as a world-class destination, its infrastructure must reflect that level of commitment.

No plans to contest in any by-election after leaving Umno: Tengku Zafrul
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ) today clarified that he has never considered contesting in any by-election, either at the parliament or state level, following his exit from Umno and his announcement of intent to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on May 30. In a statement posted on his social media today, Tengku Zafrul stressed that the possibility of running in a by-election was never part of his decision-making process when he chose to leave Umno. Advertisement 'I would like to make it clear that no discussion related to this matter ever took place, and it was not part of my consideration in making that decision. 'I strongly disagree with triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they consume both time and public funds,' he said. Addressing his resignation from Umno, Tengku Zafrul reiterated that it was a personal decision, made without external pressure. 'I acknowledge it was not an easy decision, but I carefully considered all views and opinions before arriving at it. Advertisement 'In a democratic society, every individual has the right to make personal choices. I deeply appreciate the feedback and reception to my decision,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also expressed his gratitude to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Umno Supreme Council, and especially the grassroots members in the Kota Raja division for their support during his time with the party. As for his Cabinet position, Tengku Zafrul said he would leave the matter entirely to the discretion of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I am always ready to serve the country in any capacity. I left the corporate world with the intention to contribute, and as long as my service is needed, I will continue to give without necessarily holding any position,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also confirmed that he will continue serving as a Senator until the end of his term this December. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Small food businesses need more clarity on new LPG rules, says Bung
KOTA KINABALU: A call has been made for the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to adopt a more transparent and responsible approach in enforcing Ops Gasak. The concern, raised by Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin ( pic ), centres particularly on the requirement for food premises to use commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. Bung Moktar highlighted that the lack of clarity surrounding the operation had caused confusion and anxiety among small food operators, especially in Sabah. "The people of Sabah, particularly small traders in the food sector, are now anxious and uncertain over the ministry's move to make the use of commercial LPG mandatory for food premises. "This concern stems from a lack of clear and comprehensive information on the implementation of Ops Gasak, leading to misunderstandings and unease among small food businesses," he said in a statement on Monday (June 9). The Sabah Barisan Nasional chief also called for greater transparency from the ministry, stressing that any weaknesses or confusion in implementation should not be concealed but dealt with openly and responsibly. Urging the ministry to address public concerns through a more inclusive and trader-friendly approach, he added that the state government must also play a proactive role in explaining the matter to the public, especially in providing complete information and assisting small traders with the application process for the Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB). He stressed that if the government believes domestic cooking gas is no longer suitable for use in certain food outlets, then the rationale, guidelines, and enforcement conditions must be clearly outlined. "This will avoid confusion and unfairness in implementation,' he said. Bung Moktar further emphasised the importance of balancing regulatory enforcement with on-the-ground realities. "This balance is key to effective administration and the people's wellbeing. I urge all parties involved to show greater commitment in addressing this issue thoroughly, fairly, and prudently," he said.

Kunak needs port for growth
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Kunak has a sea depth suitable for the shipping industry. KUNAK: Lahad Datu Umno Youth Chief and Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth Exco, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, urged the Sabah state government to consider establishing an integrated port in Kunak. This initiative aims to stimulate economic development in the district, particularly along the east coast of Sabah, while also creating more job opportunities for local residents. Advertisement Anil said that Kunak's strategic location, situated between three key towns in the east coast—Lahad Datu, Semporna, and Tawau—positions it as an ideal site for development, which should be given serious attention. 'The development of an integrated port here is highly feasible, supported by several key factors that align with this vision,' he said. Additionally, the Pan Borneo Highway, which passes through Kunak, is expected to further enhance future traffic networks and accelerate regional transformation. He said a similar proposal for an integrated port in Kunak had been discussed back in 2015/16, but the initiative was stalled due to a change in government. Advertisement 'Kunak's location is more strategic, being close to Semporna and other districts along the east coast. It also has deeper waters, making it more suitable for the construction of an integrated port and a shipping industry that can accommodate large cargo vessels,' he said. Currently, the existing Kunak Port plays a vital role in supporting the export industry, particularly for downstream products such as cooking oil and crude palm oil (CPO) to international markets. In contrast, Semporna faces significant infrastructure challenges that could hinder large-scale development. The district's narrow roads and high population density contribute to heavy traffic congestion and an imbalance in development. 'The phenomenon of over-tourism in Semporna is already putting pressure on its ecosystem and local environment,' Anil noted in his statement. 'If the integrated port proposal for Kunak is given due consideration, it could unlock the economic potential of the district and its surrounding areas, while also boosting industrial growth and local businesses.' 'As a native of Kunak, I sincerely hope the state government will seriously consider this proposal for the long-term benefit of the region. The development of an integrated port in Kunak could bring significant socio-economic improvements to the district,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
