KUNAK: Lahad Datu Umno Youth Chief and Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth Exco, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, urged the Sabah state government to consider establishing an integrated port in Kunak. This initiative aims to stimulate economic development in the district, particularly along the east coast of Sabah, while also creating more job opportunities for local residents.
Advertisement Anil said that Kunak's strategic location, situated between three key towns in the east coast—Lahad Datu, Semporna, and Tawau—positions it as an ideal site for development, which should be given serious attention. 'The development of an integrated port here is highly feasible, supported by several key factors that align with this vision,' he said. Additionally, the Pan Borneo Highway, which passes through Kunak, is expected to further enhance future traffic networks and accelerate regional transformation. He said a similar proposal for an integrated port in Kunak had been discussed back in 2015/16, but the initiative was stalled due to a change in government.
Advertisement 'Kunak's location is more strategic, being close to Semporna and other districts along the east coast. It also has deeper waters, making it more suitable for the construction of an integrated port and a shipping industry that can accommodate large cargo vessels,' he said. Currently, the existing Kunak Port plays a vital role in supporting the export industry, particularly for downstream products such as cooking oil and crude palm oil (CPO) to international markets. In contrast, Semporna faces significant infrastructure challenges that could hinder large-scale development. The district's narrow roads and high population density contribute to heavy traffic congestion and an imbalance in development. 'The phenomenon of over-tourism in Semporna is already putting pressure on its ecosystem and local environment,' Anil noted in his statement. 'If the integrated port proposal for Kunak is given due consideration, it could unlock the economic potential of the district and its surrounding areas, while also boosting industrial growth and local businesses.' 'As a native of Kunak, I sincerely hope the state government will seriously consider this proposal for the long-term benefit of the region. The development of an integrated port in Kunak could bring significant socio-economic improvements to the district,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rodziah stands firm in Ampang amid Tengku Zafrul candidacy talk
Rodziah Ismail's affirmation of her commitment to Ampang comes after reports suggested PKR might consider fielding Tengku Zafrul Aziz in a Selangor parliamentary seat in the next general election. PETALING JAYA : Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail has reaffirmed her commitment to the constituency amid speculation that investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz may contest the seat in the next general election. The PKR lawmaker said in a statement that she remained focused on serving the people of Ampang, a seat she has held since the 15th general election (GE15) in 2022. 'It's been almost three years since the people of Ampang entrusted me to represent them in Parliament. 'The bitter experience of 2022 taught us one thing – the people's trust must never be betrayed. 'I remain committed to developing Ampang together with the community, restoring its charm and ensuring your voice remains my priority,' she said. Last week, Tengku Zafrul announced that he had quit Umno and expressed his intention to join PKR, further fuelling speculation about his political future. Reports yesterday suggested PKR might consider fielding him in a Selangor parliamentary seat in the next general election. Quoting grassroots leaders, China Press reported PKR is more likely to field him to contest a parliamentary seat in Selangor since the general election is expected to be held in about a year's time. Among the seats mentioned was Ampang, which is currently held by Rodziah. In February, FMT also quoted sources as saying Tengku Zafrul was likely to contest an urban Selangor seat in the next general election, with Ampang among the top choices. Among the other constituencies apparently being considered are Petaling Jaya and Pandan, both currently held by PKR MPs. Rodziah, a seasoned politician and former Selangor executive councillor, won the Ampang seat in GE15 with a majority of over 20,000 votes.

Tengku Zafrul's exit from Umno will not affect efforts to strengthen economy
KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's decision to leave Umno will not affect the government's efforts to strengthen the national economy and empower the trade sector, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said an individual's political leanings should not be mixed with the management and administration of an organisation, especially in the context of governing a country. 'We have a clear boundary (between politics and administration). We are professionals, and in line with that principle, I choose to respectfully acknowledge differing views,' he told reporters after opening the Women In Export Forum 2025 at the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) here today. Also present were Tengku Zafrul, Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Malaysian Organisation for Women and Family Affairs (HAWA) chairman Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. Ahmad Zahid was responding to a question about the impact of Tengku Zafrul's resignation from Umno on the country's administration and the implementation of government policies. Asked about his relationship with Tengku Zafrul, Ahmad Zahid briefly replied that everything is well. In a statement on May 30, Tengku Zafrul announced that he had submitted his resignation letter to the Umno leadership.
