KUNAK: Lahad Datu Umno Youth Chief and Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth Exco, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, urged the Sabah state government to consider establishing an integrated port in Kunak. This initiative aims to stimulate economic development in the district, particularly along the east coast of Sabah, while also creating more job opportunities for local residents.
Advertisement Anil said that Kunak's strategic location, situated between three key towns in the east coast—Lahad Datu, Semporna, and Tawau—positions it as an ideal site for development, which should be given serious attention. 'The development of an integrated port here is highly feasible, supported by several key factors that align with this vision,' he said. Additionally, the Pan Borneo Highway, which passes through Kunak, is expected to further enhance future traffic networks and accelerate regional transformation. He said a similar proposal for an integrated port in Kunak had been discussed back in 2015/16, but the initiative was stalled due to a change in government.
Advertisement 'Kunak's location is more strategic, being close to Semporna and other districts along the east coast. It also has deeper waters, making it more suitable for the construction of an integrated port and a shipping industry that can accommodate large cargo vessels,' he said. Currently, the existing Kunak Port plays a vital role in supporting the export industry, particularly for downstream products such as cooking oil and crude palm oil (CPO) to international markets. In contrast, Semporna faces significant infrastructure challenges that could hinder large-scale development. The district's narrow roads and high population density contribute to heavy traffic congestion and an imbalance in development. 'The phenomenon of over-tourism in Semporna is already putting pressure on its ecosystem and local environment,' Anil noted in his statement. 'If the integrated port proposal for Kunak is given due consideration, it could unlock the economic potential of the district and its surrounding areas, while also boosting industrial growth and local businesses.' 'As a native of Kunak, I sincerely hope the state government will seriously consider this proposal for the long-term benefit of the region. The development of an integrated port in Kunak could bring significant socio-economic improvements to the district,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Minister visits Sepanggar Port after industry feedback

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe ( pic ) has taken proactive steps to address congestion and operational concerns raised by logistics and transportation stakeholders at Sepanggar Port. Phoong conducted a follow-up visit to the port and met directly with operator DP World after receiving feedback from key associations including SABFFLA, PPLKKK, and FMM Sabah. Advertisement He was briefed on improvements, including the deployment of three new Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes, which have helped reduce berthing waiting times and improved wharfside operations. Despite these gains, congestion persists at the entrance and container yard due to a spike in export volume, with TEU growth reaching 11 per cent year-on-year as of May this year. DP World is set to roll out a Vehicle Booking System (VBS) in July to ease lorry traffic and reduce queuing times, while the Sepanggar Port expansion remains on schedule for completion by Q3 2026. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mustapha open to friendly contests if seat talks fail

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: SERDANG: Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud ( pic ) says he is open to 'friendly contests' between allies if the ongoing negotiations over seat allocations ahead of the Sabah state election fail. Mustapha said PKR is working to prevent clashes between parties in the government coalition, and aiming for fair seat distribution without overlaps. Advertisement 'We're still negotiating and doing our best to avoid contests. The goal is fair allocation without duplication,' he said. 'But if talks break down, friendly contests are an option. It's common in politics.' He did not specify which parties are involved in the negotiations. Mustapha, the deputy higher education minister, was speaking to reporters at an event at Universiti Putra Malaysia here today. Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak yesterday suggested that overlapping seats be handled through friendly contests, while maintaining unity and a shared objective. He said this approach was better than allowing internal tensions or encouraging sponsored independent candidates. Mustapha said PKR's main priority was political stability, and warned that clashes at the state level could strain relationships within the federal government. 'I urge everyone to stay open-minded. There's no benefit in fighting among ourselves and risking division. 'We want unity to continue. Avoiding unnecessary contests can help reduce friction among parties,' he said. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
