Speed up Kunak District Office complex: Umno

Published on: Thursday, May 22, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 22, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: The proposed site for the new building. KUNAK: The government has been urged to expedite the implementation of previously approved development projects, including the long-delayed construction of the new Kunak District Office complex. Barisan Nasional Youth Exco, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, said the project — involving 8.01 acres (3.242 hectares) of state land near Kunak Spur Road — had been allocated specifically for the development of a new Kunak District Office. Anil, who is also the Umno Lahad Datu Youth Chief, said the proposal was approved by the state government in 2017 during the tenure of the late Kunak Assemblyman, Datuk Nilwan Kabang. 'However, following the 2018 general election and a change in state leadership, the project faced disruption due to alleged interference by the then Kunak Assemblyman from Parti Warisan,' he said. 'Despite the availability of funds at the time, political polemics halted the project. I was informed that contractors who had already begun site levelling work suffered financial losses due to the unexpected delays,' Anil told the media on Tuesday. He stressed that not only should the District Office project proceed, but all other development initiatives in Kunak that had previously been approved should also move forward without further postponement. Advertisement 'The project site is overgrown with secondary forest, ruining the original landscape and symbolizing neglect,' he said. Anil emphasized that development projects should not be derailed by political changes, arguing that political polemics only hinder progress and hurt the people. 'Regardless of a leader's political affiliation, development projects that benefit the people and the state of Sabah should not be politicized,' he said. He urged the current GRS-PH Plus government not to be influenced by narrow-minded political sentiments propagated by certain individuals for personal gain. Citing another example, Anil pointed to the delayed construction of the new Kunak branch of the State Library, which he claimed was similarly stalled after the 2018 change in government due to political interference. 'There is nothing wrong with continuing approved projects from the previous administration if they are beneficial to the people. We will never progress if we keep fighting among ourselves,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Highlighting of woes by Express produces results

Published on: Wednesday, May 21, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 21, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: KUNAK: The Consumers Front of Sabah (CFOS) commended the media's role in highlighting the structural damage along Jalan Tingkayu, which recently went viral on social media and caused traffic disruptions. Its President Nordin Thani said as a non-governmental organisation advocating for consumer rights in Sabah, they consistently collaborate with organisations working to protect public interests. He said the media plays an important role in spotlighting consumer-related issues, including road infrastructural problems. 'The CFOS acknowledges that repair work on Jalan Tingkayu began days ago, with some attributing the delay to temporary issues,' Nordin said. However, he pointed out the need for frequent monitoring by relevant authorities, particularly the Public Works Department given the road's vulnerability to structural damage, especially during rainy seasons. 'As a local Sabah newspaper, Daily Express has fulfilled its duty. Now, responsible agencies must also step up,' he added. Advertisement Nordin, who is also a member of the Majlis Penasihat Pengguna Negara, urged authorities to take road issues affecting Sabahans seriously. State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya had directed the Public Works Department to address the complaints after Daily Express brought the matter to his attention last Monday. A site inspection on Thursday confirmed that machinery, including graders and compactors had commenced repairs along the main route. Records show the contractor responsible for maintaining the gravel road was appointed on July 20, 2020, with the tender set to expire on July 19 this year. The 30-km Jalan Tingkayu, under the Department's supervision, has drawn complaints since last year due to its deteriorating surface, protruding rocks and uneven sections, posing challenges for light vehicles. On April 20, a lorry got stuck in a damaged section, disrupting traffic from daytime until midnight. The poor conditions also endanger teachers at SK Ladang Binuang and residents of nearby estates, while ambulances face routine delays during emergencies. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Call to revive politically delayed Kunak District Office project

Published on: Tuesday, May 20, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: The regrowned proposed site despite initial clearing works in 2018. KUNAK: Umno Lahad Datu Youth Chief and BN Youth Exco Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu has urged the current government to expedite development projects that were previously approved, including the construction of the new Kunak District Office. The project, on an 8.01-acre state-owned land near Kunak Spur Road, was approved in 2017 under the late Datuk Nilwan Kabang's administration. However, it was stalled following the 2018 general election due to alleged political interference after a change in government. Anil said the delay caused financial losses for contractors and left the site overgrown with vegetation. He stressed that all previously approved projects should proceed, regardless of political shifts. He also cited the long-delayed Kunak public library project as another victim of political polemics, urging the current GRS-PH Plus government to prioritise development over partisanship. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
