Israel approves plan to seize Gaza City, prompting sharp domestic backlash

Shafaq News – Gaza Israel's security cabinet approved a plan on Friday proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to establish military control over Gaza City, a move that has sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders and heightened concerns over the fate of hostages. A statement from Netanyahu's office said the Israeli military is preparing to take control of the city 'while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.' According to the statement, the cabinet voted in favor of five key principles to end the war: 1. The disarming of Hamas. 2. The return of all the hostages – the living and the deceased. 3. The demilitarization of the Gaza Strip. 4. Israeli security control in the Gaza Strip. 5. The establishment of an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority. The government statement added that a 'decisive majority' of ministers rejected a competing proposal presented to the cabinet, stating it would 'neither achieve the defeat of Hamas nor the return of the hostages' though no further details were disclosed. He blamed far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for pushing Netanyahu into what he described as 'a step that will take months, cost the lives of hostages and soldiers, and trap Israel on the battlefield with no clear objective'—something he claimed was 'exactly what Hamas wants.' — יאיר לפיד - Yair Lapid (@yairlapid) August 8, 2025 Avigdor Lieberman, head of the Israel Beitenu party, also criticized the plan, accusing Netanyahu of 'once again sacrificing Israeli security for political survival.' — אביגדור ליברמן (@AvigdorLiberman) August 8, 2025 Yair Golan, leader of Israel's Democratic Party, called the decision—reportedly made 'against the advice of the army chief'—a 'disaster for generations and a death sentence for the hostages.' Israeli drone targets vehicle in southern Lebanon

Shafaq News – South Lebanon (Updated at 11:25) An Israeli drone strike on Friday hit a civilian vehicle on the Zahrani highway near Phoenicia University in southern Lebanon. Eyewitnesses told Shafaq News that the vehicle caught fire following the strike, which reportedly involved two missiles. Emergency crews rushed to the scene. The Ministry of Health said that one person was killed. The incident came hours after an Israeli airstrike killed six people near the Masnaa border crossing in Beqaa and amid continued escalation despite the ceasefire brokered last November. Lebanese authorities say Israel has carried out over 4,000 violations since the truce, leaving more than 250 dead. 🚨🚨 شهيد بغارة اسرائيلية على اتوستراد صيدا - صور — Al Jadeed News (@ALJADEEDNEWS) August 8, 2025

2,070 victims without graves: Nineveh remembers 'Khafsa' atrocity

Shafaq News – Nineveh On Thursday, the province of Nineveh commemorated the anniversary of the "Khafsa Massacre," where 2,070 residents of Mosul were executed by ISIS in 2015 on charges of apostasy. In a statement, Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dakhil said, 'That tragedy will remain an enduring witness to the brutality and savagery of terrorism,' noting that the Provincial Council, in close coordination with the judiciary, is moving forward to open the Khafsa mass grave—considered one of the largest mass graves in human history—document the crime, restore the dignity and rights of the victims, and ensure justice for their families. The site, known locally as 'al-Khafsa,' is a deep geological sinkhole located about 20 kilometers south of Mosul. It was used by ISIS as a mass burial site to conceal the bodies of its victims during the group's control over the city from June 2014 to July 2017. Despite repeated demands by the people of Nineveh and human rights organizations to uncover the truth and determine the fate of the missing, the site remains sealed to this day.
