BCCI announces $6.7m bonus for victorious India team after Champions Trophy win

Gulf Today20-03-2025

The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) handed its team, which claimed the Champions Trophy title earlier this month, a $6.72 million cash bonus on Thursday, an amount three times the winner's purse for the 50-overs tournament.
Rohit Sharma and his men beat New Zealand by four wickets in the March 9 final in Dubai to win their second successive global title, following their Twenty20 World Cup triumph last year. The team took home $2.24 million for the Champions Trophy win.
The BCCI, the world's richest cricket board, announced an additional Rs580 million for the players, support staff and members of the selection committee for their latest success in an International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament.
"Winning back-to-back ICC titles is special and this reward recognises Team India's dedication and excellence on the global stage," BCCI president Roger Binny said in a statement.

"The cash award is a recognition of the hard work that everyone puts in behind the scenes."
Board secretary Devajit Saikia said the players deserved the bonus for India's recent domination of limited-overs cricket.
"This victory has justified India's top ranking in white-ball cricket, and we are sure the team will continue to excel in the years to come," Saikia said.

Proteas aim to remain calm ahead of a historic title chase

South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince believes the team is under no pressure despite being on the brink of breaking a long-standing ICC title drought. As Day 3 of the Ultimate Test came to a close, South Africa needed just 69 more runs to secure the ICC World Test Championship crown — their first ICC men's title since 1998. Prince emphasised that the team is in no hurry to finish the game, and are focused and composed as they edge closer to a historic victory. "One of the things we said before the run chase was that the game will finish when it finishes, whether that is tomorrow at lunchtime or whatever time, the end of the match will take care of itself," Prince said. "For us, the most important thing is to remain in the moment. Stay in the moment. And obviously, from a batting point of view, that means play one ball at a time." Prince was full of praise for South Africa's two stars of the day — Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma. The pair has stitched together a 143-run unbeaten partnership, firmly tilting the game in Proteas' favour as they edge closer to a famous win at Lord's.

By Jonathan Healy, at Lord's And while Maharaj knows there is still work ahead before his team can celebrate, the left-armer believes victory in London will prove a decisive moment cricket in his country. "It would mean everything," an emotional Maharaj told ICC Digital after South Africa reached 213/2 at stumps after three days of the Ultimate Test. "Not just us (the players) out there or the fans here, but to everyone back home. "To see how long it's taken for this country to hold some sort of ICC final trophy in their hands. "I'm sorry, I'm getting a bit teary-eyed, but I think it would be a privilege to be a part of, because we faced a lot as our country. "And to see it come, well not to get ahead, but to nearly get there is a very special feeling. So special." Captain Bavuma overcomes pain to battle on for South Africa | WTC25 Final With discomfort in his hamstring, Temba Bavuma continues to fight on for South Africa as they push for a historic win at Lord's. If the Proteas can knock up the required runs for victory on Saturday and win their first ICC men's trophy since 1998 there will be plenty of people that played a major role in the success that has been led superbly by new coach Shukri Conrad. Lion-hearted pacer Kagiso Rabada has led the way against Australia with nine wickets across the two innings, while Markram will also receive plenty of accolades following his flawless century on the third day at the Home of Cricket. Markram notches a scintillating ton in the Ultimate Test | WTC25 Final Aiden Markram caps off a brilliant outing on Day 3 with a century to remember at Lord's. Markram is renowned as being a player that ups his game and rises to the big occasion and Maharaj admitted he could sense a big score coming from the talented right-hander. "I saw a different sort of desire and focus in Aiden's eyes today when he came off the field (prior to batting) as I think he wanted to rectify the mistake that he made in the first innings," Maharaj said. "Kudos to him to put that into place. He's a big match player and big players rise up to the moment and rectify their mistakes very quickly. "There's no better fitting moment for him to get a Test hundred here at Lord's in a final against probably a team that I don't think they've ever lost a final." Markram cuts with supreme precision | WTC25 Final Aiden Markram plays a delightful cut shot to keep the momentum going for South Africa on Day 3. Maharaj also paid tribute to Bavuma, after his captain showed enormous determination to battle a hamstring injury and played a vital role in the unbeaten stand of 143 that has South Africa close to victory. "He had a little bit of a niggle, but the warrior and fighter that he is was there with Aidan to support it," Maharaj said of Bavuma. "It was amazing to hear how they complemented each other when they came off at the tea break, just hearing about how they're going to go about their business and understanding that obviously Temba can't run at full tilt, but Aiden embraced that."
