Oman's High Performance 49er Team Sets Sail at Kieler Woche 2025
The event marks the team's second major international competition of the season, following their participation in the 49er European Championship in Greece earlier this month. With 12 races scheduled over five days, the regatta offers a critical opportunity to refine skills and gain experience against a highly competitive fleet. The team, however, was forced to wait for their first race of the day due to the light summer breeze and ended their shortened in 33rd position after completing just two races.
Hashim Al Rashdi, Oman Sail's Head Performance Coach, commented: 'Kieler Woche is a cornerstone event in our preparation for the Asian Games 2026 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The level of competition here is exceptional, providing our sailors with an ideal platform to test their progress under pressure. Musab and Waleed have shown great dedication, and we're confident this event will play a key role in their development as they work toward Olympic qualification.'
The team is coached by Jacek Nowak, a seasoned 49er campaigner with extensive experience in European and world championships. Nowak emphasised the importance of adaptability: 'Kiel's conditions can be unpredictable, demanding quick decision-making and technical precision. Our goal is to leverage every race to strengthen the crew's tactical awareness and resilience, which are key for the upcoming World Championship and Asian Championship.'
Following Kieler Woche, the team will return to Oman for further training before heading to the 49er World Championship in Italy from 7-13 October and the Asian Sailing Championship in November.

Oman ready for historic Asia Cup debut
MUSCAT: Oman will take a historic step in their cricket journey this September when they make their maiden appearance in the 2025 Men's Asia Cup, to be staged in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Drawn in Group A alongside defending champions India, Pakistan and hosts UAE, the national team players, under head coach Duleep Mendis, will get a rare opportunity to test themselves against some of the biggest names in world cricket. The eight-team tournament to be played in T20I format features the five ACC full-member nations – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan – along with three Associate qualifiers – UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. Oman booked their berth by finishing as runners-up in the 2024 ACC Men's Premier Cup, a strong campaign that underscored the side's growing reputation in Asian cricket. Oman have also built an impressive record in the shortest format on the global stage, being the only associate Asian team having qualified for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup three times – in 2016, 2021 and 2024 – with their 2016 debut highlighted by a memorable win over Ireland. For Mendis, the Asia Cup is a landmark opportunity his players must fully embrace. 'This is a wonderful opportunity for Oman to play in the Asia Cup alongside Test-playing nations,' said the Sri Lankan great. Mendis, who also serves as the Chief Development Officer & Head Coach of Oman Cricket (OC) added: 'It's not every day you get to compete against the big boys – India and Pakistan. Every Omani cricketer dreams of moments like this, and our players should seize it with both hands and give their maximum. 'In T20 cricket, it's anybody's game. We are preparing well, and plan to arrange pre-tour matches against good opposition teams. Our focus is on doing well in the Asia Cup before hosting the T20 World Cup qualifiers in Oman.' Oman Cricket (OC) treasurer Alkesh Joshi hailed the team's qualification as the result of years of dedication and strategic development. 'Qualifying to play alongside five full-member Test nations is a testament to the quality of our squad and the work Oman Cricket has put in over the years,' Joshi said. 'We are delighted to be in the same group as India and Pakistan. Many of our players have grown up watching the greats from these countries, and playing against them will be a massive learning experience.' Joshi added: 'Appearing in three ICC Men's T20 World Cups is something we can all be proud of, and having Oman's name on a stage watched by hundreds of millions gives us a chance to showcase the quality of cricket we're building here.' The senior OC official said: 'We have an exciting support team led by coach Mendis and newly appointed deputy head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni, and we are grateful to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for its unwavering support.' Team Shito-Ryu Oman make history in Singapore
MUSCAT: Team Shito-Ryu Oman Karate Do Kai made history in the 14th Shito-Ryu International Karate Championship 2025 held in Singapore recently by claiming a record haul of 13 medals. The Muscat-based team – represented by 11 athletes and led by coach Shihan Bava Ahamed – bagged four gold, six silver and three bronze medals in kara and kumite categories. Majid al Battashi, Chairman of Shito-Ryu Oman centre, congratulated the athletes and the support staff for the remarkable achievement. 'It is a great honour for us to congratulate the athletes for the great performance of our team. The team made all of us in Oman proud by winning 13 medals, under the leadership of the esteemed coach Shihan Bava Ahamed.' Team manager, Sherly C Mathew, said it was a challenge and honour to prepare the athletes for the world championship-level event at Our Tampines Hub Indoor Stadium in Singapore from July 25 to 27. 'I think I can say this for all of us: this Taikai was a great success for Team Oman. We all worked very hard for this tournament. We met fellow practitioners from around the world, made many new friends, and had the privilege of learning from masters of the craft, skilled coaches, and instructors.' Rashika Ramesh Kumar, a participant, reflected that this Taikai will remain an unforgettable event, full of learning. 'Our team had trained hard for the Shito Ryu International Taikai event in Singapore, and our efforts paid off really well. Our aim is to qualify for 2026 World Cup: Carlos Queiroz
Muscat: Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, head coach of the Oman national football team, expressed his happiness at taking over the task of coaching the national team. He stressed his full commitment to serving Omani football and will make efforts to achieve the aspirations of the fans in the coming period, most notably qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. During the introductory press conference held on Tuesday at the Oman Football Association headquarters, Queiroz said: 'It is a pleasure to be here today. From the moment I arrived, we began working hard. I believe that our job is not only technical, but also to make the fans happy and instill a sense of pride and belonging, and we will do everything in our power to achieve that.' The veteran Portuguese coach pointed out that the challenges ahead are not easy, but they are not impossible either, stressing that smart work on the field and full cooperation off it are the key to success in achieving this great goal. Queiroz revealed the outlines of his preparatory plan for the next phase, which begins with a thorough study of the team and players, covering all physical and technical aspects. He emphasised that he closely monitors the performance of professional players abroad, has watched all of the national team's recent matches, and has a clear picture of the team's strengths and weaknesses. He explained that the first stage of preparation will be a training camp in Turkiye, in the absence of Al-Seeb players due to their commitment to the AFC Champions League 2 competition.
