The Greek National Opera opened this season's festival with Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot as Athens' ancient theater hosts its final festival season before it shuts down for at least three years for restoration and maintenance.
The Odeon of Herod Atticus, a must-see at the foot of the Acropolis, recently opened the 70th season of the annual Athens Epidaurus Festival, a cherished annual tradition for many Greeks.
The closure of the theater, which is more than 18 centuries old, will be a profound loss for spectators who have long enjoyed first-class performances under the stars in one of the world's most iconic open-air theaters.

I didn't do what I did because I wanted to party or let loose; I did it because I had a heavy heart.' Adriano also felt guilty at receiving huge wages while being unavailable to play, leading to his decision to quit Inter in 2009. There are chunky resin hoops, beads and rings in olive and ruby tones at Arket, and pretty pastel-pink pieces at Cos. Meanwhile, the biggest names in affordable luxury jewellery, including Monica Vinader and Astley Clarke, are leaning into gemstones – sales of beaded amethyst and turquoise bracelets are up 200 per cent at the latter. 'We always try to create jewellery that calls to mind holidays and eternal summer,' says founder and creative director, Helle Vestergaard Poulsen. 'In my mind, jewellery is about having fun and exploring new things, which sounds like a holiday in itself. And, of course, colours – both bright and subtle – always go well with sun-kissed skin.' Of course, you don't have to be bronzed or luxuriating in balmier climes. Colourful jewellery can add an uplifting touch to the greyest of days. The contrast of bright earrings with a crisp white shirt, or a gemstone with a trusted black dress can provide precisely the pick-me-up required to make it through the great British summer. 'I always use my jewellery to add a pop of colour to more neutral outfits,' says Vestergaard Poulsen. 'I love a bright-red necklace with my denim-on-denim outfits, or pairing vintage blouses with skinny gold chains and bold statement necklaces.' Whether you adopt this more-is-more mentality or keep things more restrained, a welcome dopamine boost awaits.
