Seth Meyers: ‘We're just one Epstein story away from Trump announcing that UFOs are real'

The Guardian25-07-2025
Late-night hosts sort through Donald Trump's many distraction tactics as it's revealed he learned that his name was in the Jeffrey Epstein files in May.
Seth Meyers opened his Late Night Closer Look segment on Thursday with clips of Donald Trump explicitly instructing Republicans to talk about Barack Obama stealing an election when asked about Jeffrey Epstein.
'It's like watching a magic trick and it's also a shitty trick,' Meyers laughed. 'But Trump seemed confident that this tactic would work.'
'It's a transparent gimmick,' he added, 'and now he's got his intelligence director fully on board,' as Tulsi Gabbard joined a White House briefing to repeat a conspiracy theory that Obama ordered an investigation into Russia and the 2016 election in order to hurt Trump.
Gabbard called it 'a yearslong conspiracy against the American people' and 'an attempt to undermine President Trump's administration'.
'Whatever is in those Epstein files must be really fucking bad,' Meyers mused. 'They must be finding so many mentions of Trump they're going to have to change the name to the Trump files featuring Jeffrey Epstein. They're so desperate to distract everyone, they're claiming that Barack Obama is guilty of treasonous conspiracy and leading a coup against Trump. Barack Obama? The guy couldn't even get away with smoking a cigarette in his own house.'
'I honestly think we're just one Epstein story away from Trump announcing that UFOs are real,' he quipped.
The attempts at distraction keep 'falling flat' because new information about Trump's relationship with Epstein continues to emerge. On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that in May, attorney general Pam Bondi informed Trump that his name was in the Epstein files.
'Of course he's in the files!' Meyers exclaimed. 'He knew Epstein for 15 years. Epstein called him his closest friend. I have no idea if Trump committed a crime with Epstein, but the reason we're talking about this at all is because of Republicans who hyped it up for years thinking it would damage their political opponents.'
Meyers then played a clip of conspiracy podcast host turned deputy FBI director Dan Bongino from before the election, goading his audience to keep asking for the Epstein files. 'When you say 'Why have they been hiding it?' the 'they' is you now, bro,' Meyers laughed. 'Guys are going to have to start doing conspiracy theory podcasts about themselves – 'Why am I hiding the Epstein files? Why am I trying to make it go away? Who got to me?!''
On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert also reacted to the Wall Street Journal report that Bondi informed Trump that his name was in the files in May. 'I for one was shocked,' he joked. 'What are you going to tell me next – that the pope is in the Catholic files? That a bear is on the cover of this month's Modern Woodspooper?'
'So we don't know if he was doing the creepy crime, but we do have a cover-up,' he continued. 'And just like the cover-up on his face, it is patchy and there's something really ugly under there.'
Colbert played resurfaced video of Epstein's deposition from 2010, in which he was asked if he ever socialized with Donald Trump in the presence of females under the age of 18. Epstein answered: 'Though I'd like to answer that question, at least today, I'm going to have to assert my fifth, sixth and 14th amendment rights, sir.'
'Not a great sign when the pedophile is being asked if you're doing a pervert ride-along, and their response is 'I'd like to invoke the entire constitution, Magna Carta, the Napoleonic code and just to cover all my bases, let's throw in the entire Cheesecake Factory menu,'' Colbert laughed.
In other bad news for Trump, Epstein's brother has disputed Trump's claim that he ended the friendship with Epstein; according to Mark Epstein, Jeffrey Epstein stopped hanging out with Trump 'when he realized Trump was a crook'.
'Wow, that's extraordinary,' Colbert marveled. 'Jeffrey Epstein breaking it off with you because you're a crook? That's like walking into an intervention organized by Rudy Giuliani.'

Epstein died back in 2019, 'but not since Tupac Shakur has a dead man dropped so many bangers', said Josh Johnson on the Daily Show.
On Wednesday, video of the government's deposition of Epstein in 2010 started making the rounds online, including the question about socializing with Trump in front of females under the age of 18. Johnson took in Epstein's non-answer citing three different amendments – 'I'm going to put that down as a yes,' he said.
'I'll be honest, I've never heard anybody plead anything other than the fifth before,' he added. 'But this guy is so guilty, he's calling out any amendment he can think of.'
Bondi, meanwhile is nowhere to be seen after the Wall Street Journal report; her next appearance was scheduled for Wednesday night at a CPAC summit on human trafficking, but she dropped out, citing a 'recently torn cornea'.
'Even Pam Bondi's cornea is like 'release the Epstein files or I quit!'' Johnson joked.

Cop from hell fired after mocking female co-workers for having C-sections and calling them 'diversity hires'

A Texas cop has been fired after he reportedly told his co-workers they were 'diversity hires' and mocked an officer for having undergone a C-section birth. Officer Emilio De La Rosa was given an indefinite suspension on June 23 after making crass comments to his colleagues and undermining his superior officer during a single shift. In February, De La Rosa was reportedly overheard saying, 'two C-sections but never gave birth'. A female officer said the comment was 'very personal' because De La Rosa insinuated that 'birth only counts when it is a natural delivery,' records obtained by KSAT stated. During the same shift, another female co-worker, who had got on her knees to get a laptop charger, was reportedly told by De La Rosa that she no longer needed to get on her knees because she had already been selected for the DWI unit, the outlet reported. The female officer then reported the remark to internal affairs as sexual harassment, records stated. 'Considering I had only one month on the DWI unit, I took that as sexually harassing comment about my selection to the unit,' the officer said, records stated. 'I felt very embarrassed and ashamed to be around other probationary officers and to have been in a disadvantaged position when he made the comment.' De La Rosa was then heard saying, on the same shift, that 'too many' women and Black officers were going to be assigned to the DWI unit as 'diversity hires'. The comment was reported by a second female officer to internal affairs. The officer was also questioned by a sergeant about an arrest made earlier in the shift, and De La Rosa later told a fellow officer that the sergeant didn't know what he was talking about, the outlet reported. His comment was construed to 'undermine the knowledge of his supervisor' and showed De La Rosa 'failed to exhibit respect for his supervisory officer', records stated. 'Officer De La Rosa's actions render his continuance in office detrimental to effective law enforcement and the needs of the San Antonio Police Department,' the City of San Antonio Human Resources Department wrote. 'The law and sound community expectations recognize that there is good cause for depriving Officer De La Rosa of his position.' De La Rosa reportedly worked with the San Antonio Police Department since 2016, according to KSAT.

Trump demands UK pharmaceutical giants to lower drug costs sparking fears NHS could pay the price if they refuse

Donald Trump has demanded UK pharmaceutical giants lower prices for America and suggested charging others to make up the difference. He said if they didn't, the US would deploy 'every tool in our arsenal' to protect families from 'continued abusive drug prices', sparking fears the NHS will end up paying more. Mr Trump suggested he would use tariffs to push through higher prices if countries resisted. In May Mr Trump signed an executive order demanding drugmakers cut US medicine prices to match those abroad. Yesterday in a letter to 17 pharma companies he said he expected them to deliver on measures by September 29. He asked them to apply 'most favoured nation' pricing to Medicaid, the US health programme for people on low incomes. Mr Trump also asked drugmakers to offer new medicines at the same price in the US as in other developed countries. He said: 'Our citizens pay massively higher prices than other nations pay for the same exact pill... subsidizing socialism aboard [abroad].' British pharma companies AstraZeneca and GSK were among the recipients. Others included Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Sanofi. The UK Government said it would 'continue to work closely with the US to get the best deal for our pharma industry and deliver mutual benefits for both our countries'.

Trump says Brazil's Lula can call him anytime

WASHINGTON/BRASILIA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva can call him anytime to discuss tariffs and other friction between the countries. "He can talk to me anytime he wants," Trump said of Lula, speaking to reporters at the White House. He added he was fond of the Brazilian people but "the people running Brazil did the wrong thing." Later, speaking with reporters in Brasilia, Brazil Finance Minister Fernando Haddad called Trump's remarks "great," saying he is sure Lula feels the same, and would be willing to receive a call from the U.S. president. In a post on his X account, Lula said Brazil has always been open to dialogue, although he did not mention Trump nor his earlier remarks. Trump slapped a 50% tariff on Brazil, with many exemptions, starting next week to fight what he has called a "witch hunt" against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial on charges of plotting a coup following his election loss in 2022. The U.S. also announced sanctions on a Brazilian Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial. Lula has rejected both the sanctions and the tariffs, calling them "unjustifiable" and an "unacceptable" interference in Brazil's justice system. Haddad said his planned virtual meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent next week will pave the way for an eventual meeting between Lula and Trump, but noted such a move would require preparation. Earlier this week, Haddad said Brazil needed assurance Lula would not face the same treatment as Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who came under fire from Trump and Vice President JD Vance during a heated exchange at the White House earlier this year.
