Stewart Cink heats up, takes 3-stroke lead at Boeing Classic

WASHINGTON: Stewart Cink shot a bogey-free 8-under-par 64 yesterday to take a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington.
Cink moved up 10 spots from the first round on Friday with eight birdies at Nos. 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18 to get to 12 under for the tournament at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge.
"If you stopped me after about No. 5 and said, 'Hey, what are the chances you're going to shoot 64 today?' I would have probably said you were crazy because nothing was happening at all," Cink, 52, said after the round.
"I made a really good par save on the third hole, which is a tough par 4. I made a sloppy par on the first hole, which is an easy par 5. ... Nothing was happening.
"But then, amazing how your momentum can flip with just one, really one putt, and a good putt on 6 from about 15 feet went in the center. It was kind of just the lid was off."
Cink saved par at No. 17 after his tee shot landed about 80 feet from the pin and he got within 5 feet putting his second shot at the par-3 hole.
"Yeah, that was a really big moment because you don't want to throw away a shot. It wasn't a horrible shot off the tee, just a little bit of a cut that didn't really cut and it just ended up down where it did," Cink said.
"To get that ball close enough where the next putt was really makeable was a good way to just kind of keep the momentum going and keep the mindset in the right place."
Steven Alker of New Zealand and Paul Goydos are tied for second at 9-under 135. Alker shot 4-under 68 yesterday, while Goydos carded 69.
"I just kind of kept the round going," Alker said. "I played the par 5s poorly. You've got to get the par 5s out here today. I think I played them 1 over, so you can't do that tomorrow. But otherwise, most of the day just kept my nose clean and hit some good shots. Kind of felt like I left a little bit out there."
Alker was working an unblemished round with birdies at Nos. 5, 6, 12, 14 and 17, then he bogeyed the par-5 No. 18.
"Yeah, just unfortunate about 18," Alker said.
"Going to make dinner taste a little bit not as good. But I'm right there, so I like the golf course, the game's feeling OK, so go get 'em tomorrow."
First-round co-leaders Jerry Kelly and Matt Gogel each fired a 71 to move to 8 under and are tied for fourth with Australian Steve Allan (68). Kelly, 58, is trying to win the Boeing Classic for the second time.
It was the site of his first PGA Tour Champions victory in 2017; now he's searching for his 14th title overall.

Tennis-Venus Williams receives US Open wildcard

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Two-time U.S. Open singles champion Venus Williams has received a wildcard entry into this year's tournament, organisers said on Wednesday, as the 45-year-old American continues her age-defying return to the court. Williams became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat Peyton Stearns at last month's Washington Open after a 16-month absence from competitive tennis. She last played in the U.S. Open singles main draw in 2023, losing in the first round to Belgian Greet Minnen. The seven-time Grand Slam winner is also playing in the tournament's new-look mixed doubles tournament with compatriot Reilly Opelka. Other women's singles wildcards included France's Caroline Garcia, in what will likely be the 2022 semi-finalist's last appearance at Flushing Meadows. The 2022 WTA Finals winner announced plans to retire from the sport earlier this year. (Reporting by Amy Tennery in New York, Editing by Ed Osmond)

Comcast debuts soccer-focused video package ahead of World Cup

FILE PHOTO: The Official FIFA World Cup Trophy is seen before a news conference in New York City, New York, U.S., June 17, 2022. REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File Photo (Reuters) -Internet and media giant Comcast launched a soccer-focused video package exclusively for its Xfinity customers on Wednesday, as it looks to attract sports fans ahead of major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Comcast has priced the offering, called "World Soccer Ticket", at $85 a month. The bundle includes nearly 60 broadcast, cable news, and sports channels, along with a premium subscription of NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service. As cord cutting continues to hit traditional TV revenue, live sports content has emerged as one of the few formats that still draw millions of eyeballs and boost advertising demand. The package comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Every match of the quadrennial tournament will be available in English on Fox and in Spanish across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock, Comcast said on Wednesday. The plan will also offer live coverage of major international leagues and competitions, including Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions Cup. Besides, the package will include live coverage of other major sports and leagues like the NFL and NBA on the package's networks and Peacock. Customers can access the package through X1 set-top box and Xfinity Stream TV app on supported platforms like Apple TV and Fire TV. Comcast's new offering is expected to drive demand for its networks like NBC and boost subscriber growth for its flagship streaming platform, Peacock, which had 41 million paid subscribers at the end of June, far fewer than rival platforms. Media companies are aggressively pursuing major sports deals to strengthen their streaming platforms. The newly merged Paramount secured exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship for seven years in a $7.7 billion deal on Monday.
