Wanted inter-state criminal killed in police encounter in Bihar, constable injured
Arvind Sahni, 30, had escaped from a court lockup after evading police in Samastipur district on May 28 this year and had been on the run since.
According to police, he was involved in at least 22 cases of murder, loot, dacoity, and arms deals across Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, and East Champaran districts.
A police constable was injured during the exchange of fire. Based on a tip-off, a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and district police surrounded Chintamanipur village under Vaishali police station limits on Thursday evening to search for Sahni. On seeing the police, Sahni and his accomplices opened fire. Sahni sustained gunshot injuries, while his accomplices managed to escape. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
Superintendent of Police, Vaishali, Lalit Mohan Sharma, said, 'While Sahni was killed, a police constable sustained injuries in the exchange of fire. The deceased, a member of an inter-state gang, was wanted in at least 22 cases in several districts in the state. Sahni's name had also figured in a major jewellery loot case in Chhattisgarh.'
Sahni, a resident of Sahtha Bhagwanpur village in Vaishali district, was also involved in the 2019 gold loot from the Hajipur office of a private finance company. SP Sharma added, 'We have launched intensive search for other members of the gang. The operation will continue till their arrest.'
Sahni's elimination in the police operation has come as a major relief for businessmen in Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Samastipur, who had been targeted by his gang. Police said the gang had unleashed a reign of terror in these districts, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.

The Madhya Pradesh Police arrested four suspects in connection with the Rs 15-crore bank robbery that took place earlier this month in Jabalpur district. Armed with weapons, the gang threatened bank employees at gunpoint and demanded access to the lockers. They then escaped with approximately 14.87 kg of gold and Rs 5.08 lakh in cash. The incident was captured on the bank's security cameras. The police's investigation revealed that the suspects had been hiding in a rented room in Indrana village. 'To avoid detection, they had created fake Aadhaar cards and posed as finance company employees to mislead local residents,' said a police officer. Police sources suspect that the robbery could be the work of a larger criminal syndicate. 'We believe there's a bigger criminal network behind this incident, and we're investigating it thoroughly,' said a senior police officer. The investigation suggests the heist was meticulously planned, with the gang conducting reconnaissance before executing the robbery. 'Five police teams are currently conducting raids across different areas to apprehend the remaining fugitives involved in the heist,' the officer said.

A 22-year-old man was brutally assaulted by a group of men in Belgharia's Colony Bazar area on Friday night after he allegedly refused to pay donation for Ganesh Puja, said police. Aditya Mohanty, a resident of Ward Number 25 under Kamarhati Municipality, was admitted to a hospital with severe injuries in his head and eyes. According to the police, Mohanty's family alleged that their son had been protesting against anti-social activities in the local club and had refused to pay a donation of Rs 50,000 for Ganesh Puja demanded by local goon Rohit Singh. 'My son was returning home on his bike when five to six men, who were sitting in the local club, attacked him. One of them pushed his bike and injured his leg, and then started hitting him with iron rods and bricks. They rained punches on him, which injured his eye. They hit his head with a brick. They then pushed him in a drain. If we had not reached the spot, they could have killed my son,' Aditya's father Ashok K Mohanty said. The police arrested Rohit Singh, Sayan Das, and Sourav Dutta on Saturday in connection with the incident from Barrackpore and Taki. The Barrackpore court on Sunday granted all three one-day judicial custody. The police have sought their custody to interrogate them about the whereabouts of the other accused, who are still absconding. A total of six persons have been named in the FIR. According to police sources, Singh was not present at the scene of the incident, but allegedly ordered his men to assault Mohanty. Singh has a history of alleged criminal activities, with over four cases registered against him since 2017, including allegations of extortion, assault, and threatening local businessmen. Singh, meanwhile, claimed that Mohanty had passed lewd comments on one of the assailants' wives. 'All the allegations are false. What job does the boy do that we will ask for such a huge amount of donation? There are many who come to this local club to give donations. There are some who want to stop these pujas.' Singh accused Mohanty of passing lewd comments on a woman and claimed that her husband had beat him up. He, however, refused to identify the man. 'I know them. One of them told me that Mohanty had passed some lewd comment against his wife, so he assaulted Mohanty. But I am not involved in this. I was not even present there,' Singh claimed. Local councillor Arpita Ghosh said she came to know about the incident through social media. 'I spoke to the victim's family and asked them to go to the police. All the culprits should be booked and they should be punished. I cannot say who was there or who is responsible as I do not know if the police carried out their investigation,' Ghosh said.

Kolkata: A 74-year-old retired Reserve Bank of India (RBI) employee, Onkar Barat, in Baguiati was duped of Rs 5 lakh over five days by fraudsters posing as Mumbai Police officers in a 'digital arrest' scam. The victim was cheated by unknown callers, claiming that an FIR had been lodged against him in Mumbai for allegedly circulating obscene videos. Barat's family lodged a complaint at Baguiati Police Station (PS) only after his daughter intervened and convinced him that he was being defrauded. His daughter stopped him from taking a gold loan to pay the fraudsters further. Cops have started an investigation into the matter. According to the complaint filed on Thursday, the victim, a resident of Anupama Housing Complex on VIP Road, had received a call from a number claiming to be from the telecom department on Aug 8. "The caller warned him that his phone would be disconnected within two hours. The fraudsters sent him forged documents purportedly from the Supreme Court, Reserve Bank of India, Enforcement Directorate, and Mumbai Police, all naming him as an accused. They also conducted video calls through WhatsApp, displaying fake police IDs and impersonating senior officers. Frightened over the threats against his family, Barat transferred the amount on Aug 12 to an account of a nationalised bank. The account belongs to a company registered as Om Namah Shivya Fishers at Versova, Mumbai. The fraudsters then instructed him to arrange additional funds by taking a gold loan. The man visited the Teghoria branch of a nationalised bank on Aug 13. The frauds also pressed him to borrow from a private lender. but the delay in appraisal led the fraudsters to press him to approach a private lender. At this point, his daughter—who was in Manali—stepped in. Cops said the fraudsters had access to his personal documents. "We are coordinating with cybercrime units and the concerned bank to trace the beneficiaries and block further fraudulent transactions," the officer added.
