Reece James hoping to make it a family affair on the England scene this summer
The Chelsea defender wants to pin down his place in Thomas Tuchel's side in the upcoming games against Andorra and Senegal while his sister Lauren has overcome injury to be named in the Lionesses squad for Euro 2025 in July. James is delighted for his younger sister and knows the siblings are making their parents proud. Reece James is hoping to nail his position down in Thomas Tuchel's side (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'I'm delighted for her,' the right-back said. 'She obviously got injured with England at the back end of the season, and I'm happy she got selected to represent England going into another Euros. 'I've spoken to her briefly yesterday, I know she's focused on training and trying to get her body right for the tournament. 'The family are very much happy. Both of us representing our country, they're proud.' James has some competition if he wants to make the right-back position his own for next summer's World Cup, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker also in contention. The 25-year-old has had an excellent campaign for Chelsea, leading them to Europa Conference League glory and Champions League qualification, with the chance of more silverware to come with the start of the Club World Cup later this month. He believes he is going in the 'right direction' and is not fazed by competition for places. 'I had a difficult two or three seasons, always being injured and coming back and breaking down again, and it was tough,' he admitted. 'It takes a lot out of you when you have so many setbacks. 'This season, I feel like I've come on leaps and bounds, playing on a consistent basis, getting selected for England again. I'm feeling strong, and for sure, I'm moving in the right direction. 'It's something I'm used to, playing or competing with world-class players. 'They're two phenomenal players in my position. 'And yes, of course, it's going to be tough. But we all have different capabilities and different strengths, just whichever one the manager wants to play.'

Reece James lifts the lid on Thomas Tuchel relationship after England recall
Chelsea defender Reece James is delighted that Thomas Tuchel is in charge of England and is looking forward to playing a key role in the World Cup 2026 campaign For a relatively seasoned Chelsea player, it is an occupational inevitability that you have worked with a fair few managers. And having made his club debut in October, 2019, that applies to Reece James. In the 25-year-old full-back's case, it is five, to be precise. Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca. And while he will not publicly declare his preference, there is no doubt James would have Tuchel at the top of his pecking order. Why wouldn't he? During Tuchel's 21-month period in charge at Stamford Bridge, James made 74 appearances, scoring seven goals and making 12 assists. 'We have a good relationship,' smiled James, who was pictured with the England manager at a birthday party for former Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia earlier this year. 'We won titles together and that obviously helps build a strong relationship. And Tuchel will clearly help James a lot as he tries to properly kickstart an international career that has been blighted by injury issues. James was part of the squad for the Euro 2020 finals, in 2021, but his only appearance came in the goalless draw with Scotland in the group stages. And fighting his way back from injury, James thought he might have had a chance of making the cut for World Cup 2022. Gareth Southgate, though, decided not to risk him. 'I was in the squad for 2021 but didn't play so often but I learnt a lot and we got all the way to the end,' James said. 'But then watching the World Cup was very difficult. "I wasn't selected, I was coming back from injury and it is always tough to watch, knowing you are not there. I'm excited for the future and I hope to be involved in the next major competition.' If he stays fit, there is little doubt that Tuchel will take James to World Cup 2026, having brought his former Chelsea favourite back into the England set-up and been rewarded with a goal in the 3-0 qualifying win over Latvia at Wembley. It was a moment James cherished, even though it did not look that way at the time. He explained: 'To be honest, from where I was, it didn't look like it was going in, which is why there was no celebration. It was an amazing feeling to score my first (England) goal. "It was something I've been waiting for for a long time. To be back in the England fold is an amazing feeling.' James and Maresca appeared to have their issues in the early stages of last season with the Chelsea manager saying he expected more leadership from the defender. But the captain's armband certainly seemed a more comfortable fit in the second half of the campaign as James played a pivotal role in securing a Champions League slot and lifting the UEFA Conference League trophy. Asked about his leadership, James - who confirmed he prefers to play at right-back rather than in a midfield role sometimes given to him by Maresca - responded: 'I think towards the end of the season, it may have gotten evidential. At the end of the season, there was more to fight for, there was more on the line. "There was Champions League qualification, there was a trophy. I'd like to think I am growing in that aspect.'

Ex-Man Utd star to reunite with Greenwood after missing out on dream return
Former Manchester United star Angel Gomes will link up with Mason Greenwood after sealing a shock transfer to Marseille. The England midfielder was out of contract this summer. He had been linked with a return to Old Trafford, while Premier League rivals Tottenham and West Ham were also credited with an interest. Despite that, Gomes has chosen to move elsewhere. According to RMC Sport, he is set to move to the French giants, who have offered the midfielder a three-year deal at the Stade Velodrome. Gomes has agreed to the move having been convinced by Roberto De Zerbi's style of play, while the chance to play in the Champions League proved difficult to turn down. Gomes will link up with former United teammate and fellow academy graduate Greenwood with his new employers. The striker moved to France permanently last summer and went on to score 22 goals across his debut campaign. Greenwood has been linked with a move of his own amid reported interest from Barcelona but has expressed his desire to remain with Marseille. Speaking earlier this year, he said: "I hope to be here next year for the Champions League. 'All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it's been a very positive season, we've reached our objective." Gomes, 24, has been with Lille since leaving Old Trafford in 2021. The four-time England international has gone on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring on ten occasions. Speaking previously, he admitted that he would potentially be open to a return to United. As quoted by L'Equipe, he said: 'It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. "I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn't be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that's what convinced me to move - the faith Lille had in me. "Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it's home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future."
